Dick Morris says all Hillary supporters will support Obama, but not the reverse

As much as I disagree with Dick Morris's politics, I am impressed by his intellect.  I admire the calm, articulate way he replies to questions, and he is brilliant at what he does, as evidenced by Bill Clinton's long association with him and the frequency with which he is invited on TV.  He always has something cogent and original to say like in the following video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igcB5vHKo 9k

(for some reason this blog doesn't let mey embed videos like other blogs do)

In the above video Morris asserts that despite what the polls may say now, all of Hillary's voters will support Obama.  This is because, he argues, they are older party line democrats.  This makes sense because Hillary appeals to lower income whites and traditional partisans, and whites who are concerned about social security, affordable health care, day care, really don't have the luxury to vote for McCain just to get revenge on Obama. They have real problems to be solved and only a Democrat will solve them.

By contrast Obama is bringing new people into the process. Young people who feel inspired and intellectuals and academics.  These are people who normally don't vote or are not people with needs, so there's no reason to expect all these people to vote Democrat if Hillary is the nominee. Some will vote Green, many wont vote at all, & a few will vote McCain.

Morris further argues that losing the nomination is the least of Hillary's problems.  She is staying in the race mainly because she needs financial support to pay off debt but if she doesn't rally around Obama fast, the blacks will take away even her senate seat in New York.  Morris writes an article saying that Hillary's biggest mistake was underestimating the IQ of the average voter. She thought she could spend her senate career triangulating on Iraq, not realizing that voters today are VERY SMART.

Dick Morris is a walking piece of crap. Please do not cite him as a reliable source on anything other than prostitutes and toe-sucking.

We do not want or need his analysis, no matter how favorable it might appear to Obama.

There are quite a few Hillary supporters (2.00 / 2)

who don't trust Obama on healthcare or the economy any more than they trust McCain. There are more that won't vote for Obama under any circumstances because of his association with Rev. Wright. Dick Morris knows about as much about the average Democrat as Chris Matthews does.

I agree.  I know a lot of Democrats who simply prefer McCain to Obama.  Obama's too much of an unknown and way out on the left.  Dick Morris may be right that not all HRC supporters will vote for Obama, but he's not right that all will do so.  McCain is the best thing to happen to the Republicans this election -- he's a seriously viable candidate for Independents and conservative-moderate Democrats.  You can dismiss them all you want, but these are the voters that put Reagan in the White House for two terms.  And don't forget that George Bush won in 2004 -- at a time when many were skeptical of the war and he was unpopular on many fronts -- against a candidate with far more experience than Obama.  Don't underestimate the tendency of conservative-moderate Dems to cross-over and vote Republican.

yet poll after poll show that 2x and sometimes 3x times hillary supporters are NOT going to vote for obama period. Even if 10% of them vote for McCain ( Like I and my entire family - wife/ in-laws, sister-in-law familes, aunts etc)."

Re: Dick Morris (none / 0)

Morris is honest about his dislike for Hillary (though he considers Bill brilliant).  He feels she can't be trusted.  But Morris still gives a reliable analysis because he has bult up a repuation as all knowing and all wise when it comes to predicting these horse races, and he wants to maintain that credibility.

He's a buffoon, and I'd strongly encourage you NOT to take his commentary for anything more than comedic value.

Then he's ruined his rep because he predicted Hillary would lose both TX (primary and caucus) and OH. So much for his credibility.

I'm citing him because he's the best in the business.  Who he's voting for is his business.  Yes he is sometimes wrong (a year ago he predicted Hillary would win the presidency with Obama as VP) but his mistakes are just as likely to overestimate Hillary as understimate her.

Re: Correct (none / 0)

That is what it boils down to.

I agree with you, Ginsberg and Stevens are going to retire and Roe v. Wade hangs in balance based on the outcome of the election. It is the reason that, while EMILY's list and NOW will surely be disappointed if Hillary loses, they will wholeheartedly support Obama.

Then don't vote for Obama. You're only hurting yourselves.  Obama supporters are college kids and professors.  We will be fine no matter who is president.  We haven't devoted our lives to worshipping Obama like you have Hillary. We will move on.  The people who will get hurt if McCain wins are Hillary supporters: The young girl who needs an abortion, the man who needs his union, the elderly person who needs assistance, the family who needs health care.  If you're willing to hurt yourselves just to get revenge on behalf of a woman you don't even know, then enjoy the McCain presidency.

Re: Nope (2.00 / 1)

Great job reinforcing the "Obama supporters are all members of the elitist liberal academia and starry eyed college kids" meme.  The support of both candidates is incredibly diverse, and comments like this aren't helpful at all.  Obama has far more support amongst those in college, but that doesn't mean that his support doesn't also fall into every other category that you named and countless more.

Newsflash: We all get screwed with a McCain presidency.  All of us, even those teaching and attending college.

Re: Nope (2.00 / 1)

I'm curious why this argument is supposed to sway people. "Give us our candidate that has won fewer delegates, votes, and contests or we take our vote and go home." You might as well put on a ski mask and carry a gun and a brown paper bag. Why should the person who has performed less well, thus far, in the nominating contests get the nomination? If Senator Clinton manages to pull this out and regain the lead then she will have well and truly earned it, but absent that I don't see the logic.

Re: Dick Morris says all Hillary supporters will s (2.00 / 3)

Morris is a brilliant political analyst with keen insight into any political dynamic not involving the Clintons. He anti-Clinton bias clouds his judgment on anything having to do with her.

Some examples of his Clinton insights: she won't run for Senator from New York; she will lose to Giuliani; she will lose to Lazio by 8-10 points; she's definitely running for President in 2004; "Hillary: the Movie"; and his prescient novel from 2005, "Condi vs. Hillary."

Limbaugh, Hewitt and Hannity are more credible sources of Hillary opinion than Morris. Surely the diarist can make his oft-repeated points without referencing people who should be, as Colbert says, dead to us.

Re: Dick Morris says all Hillary supporters will s (none / 0)

A year ago he predicted Hillary would be president (you can find it on youtube), so while I agree he dislikes Hillary, he doesn't just predict whatever he hopes will happen.  He was right about a lot of stuff too. He predicted Hillary would come in third in Iowa.  Few people saw that coming.
