What concern trolls don't want you to know about McCain:

MyDD has been sounding a little more reasonable after some HATE was purged over the last couple weeks. Knowing their old, blatant tactics won't fly anymore . . . we have been getting many diaries that want us to feel "concerned" about Hillary or Obama in the General Election.

Sorry . . . I think this is the wrong website to try to change anyone's mind. In fact . . . I think it is a waste of time to try to convert almost anyone on the progressive blogosphere. This site is more of a tool we can use to ensure that the reactionary forces (currently embodied in John McCain) are squashed.

Today much press was given to a venture funded by big-money donors of both HRC and Obama. HRC friend Paul Begala will consult with political mercenary David Brock to create a campaign to define John McCain. Much of the seed money for this reported $40,000,000 attack dog will come from Obama-backer George Soros.

Paul Begala

The three men I mentioned above are an interesting mix, as you have a HRC loyalist, a wealthy Obama supporter, and a former Clinton enemy in Brock. Some of you may remember that Brock was an original instigator in the Arkansas State Trooper scandal, and author of a scathing attack on Anita Hill.

David Brock

Brock is now seen in political circles as closer to Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign than to Sen. Barack Obama's, but Brock said he has already met with former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, a close Obama ally.

"This is a unity play," Brock said.

--------

Brock said Los Angeles real estate magnate Steve Bing was among a group of donors backing his group's long-term mission -- despite many Democrats' expectations that Bing and other Clinton supporters would only contribute if Clinton is the nominee. Soros, the group's key backer, supports Obama, and hosted a key, early gathering of the senator's wealthy New York supporters.

--------

He recalled that in 2004, his fledgling group had debunked "90 percent" of the content of an advertisement Swift Boat Veterans' for Truth that challenged Sen. John Kerry's war record -- but had no way to distribute the information.
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/040 8/9514.html

Now Brock is the hired gun that is aiming to take down the McCain candidacy. Some MyDD readers may find this form of "dirty politics" horrible, but this attack team (one of many to come) is one of the reasons why a flawed candidate like John McCain will be no match for the Democratic nominee in the general election.

The McCain campaign sent out a desperate plea to it's donor base today, after news of this attack machine leaked out:

Dear McCain Supporter,

George Soros the "liberal megadonor" is at it again. He and his group of billionaire left-wing Democrats have pledged $40 million dollars of soft money to smear John McCain in a national television ad campaign.

In an article published in Politico, it was reported that Paul Begala and David Brock met with a gang of Manhattan liberals at the home of George Soros to outline their plans for a $40 million dollar ad campaign against Senator McCain. Brock is quoted as saying the group could do the work of the press corps that has "fallen down on the job" when it comes to McCain!

Folks, that is why we need your help and we need it now. We need to be able to answer whatever smear campaigns the liberal left throws at us. Please help as we combat this base demagoguery with a donation of $50, $100, $250 or even $1000 today?

Soros and his liberal friends need to know that they cannot buy this election with their billions. With your help we will continue to get out the straight talk on the issues that Americans care about.

Sincerely,

Rick Davis
Campaign Manager

P.S. - Billionaire George Soros has shown time after time that he is willing to fund baseless left-wing smear campaigns. Help us combat the millions he plans to use against us - please make your most generous donation right away. Many thanks.

George Soros

McCain has a problem . . . he never expected the Democrats to have TWO amazing candidates that could outspend him until late August . . . when he can start using the Federal dollars he will be granted. Obama and HRC don't need that Federal money, as they have more than enough to destroy McCain after the first week of June ends the primary voting.

McCain tried to redefine himself on "The View" today, and by touting a new Housing crisis plan . . . but he only ended up pissing off his conservative base. They think he is a liberal in GOP clothing, and we know he is four more years of George W. Bush.

Here is a small taste of the presumptive GOP sacrificial lamb:

Numerous Republican colleagues have witnessed John McCain's explosive temper:

   * Defending His Amnesty Bill in May, 2007, Sen. McCain Lost His Temper And "Screamed, `F*ck You!' at Texas Sen. John Cornyn" (R-TX).

   * "The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me." -- Sen. Thad Cochran  (R-MS)

   * "I think he is mentally unstable and not fit to be president" -- former Rep. John LeBoutillier (R-NY)

# McCain has said withdrawal from Iraq would mean surrender but In 1993 and 1994 John McCain argued for immediate US withdrawal from Somalia and Haiti, regardless of the level of chaos left behind.

# While campaigning for president, John McCain has talked about staying in Iraq and Afghanistan for 100 years, bombing Iran and has promised more wars.

# John McCain repeatedly confuses who we are fighting in Iraq, mixing up Al-Qaeda, Iran, Sunnis and Shiites.

# McCain flip-flopped on torture, recently voting against a bill to ban water boarding, and applauding President Bush for vetoing that bill.

# McCain's voting record on Veterans issues is terrible according to StandUp4Vets.org.

# The Children's Defense Fund rated McCain as the worst senator in Congress for children in 2007. He voted against the children's health care bill in 2007 and then defended Bush's veto of the bill.

# McCain's voting record on middle class legislation has received an overall score of F (50%) according to TheMiddleClass.org.

# McCain promotes himself as being concerned about the environment but his voting record on the environment has received an overall score of F (44%) from the League of Conservation Voters and Sierra Club.

# McCain promotes himself as being tough on special interest influence but his campaign manager and top advisers are lobbyists and he has 59 lobbyists raising money for his campaign, more than any of the other presidential candidate.

# McCain is one of the richest US Senators.  He and his wife own at least eight homes and yet he says the solution to the housing crisis is for people facing foreclosure to get a "second job" and skip their vacations.

The above examples are child's play compared to what is in store for the Arizona Senator. Think about that the next time you read a diary from an Obama or HRC supporter trying to get you all concerned about how poorly one of the DEMs will do in the GE.

Thanks!

I was trying to come up with a witty caption for the McCain pic, but I couldn't think of one that did the pic justice.

Any ideas?!

Not me. (2.00 / 0)

Some MyDD readers may find this form of "dirty politics" horrible

What I find horrible is the idea of having this guy appoint four new Supreme Court Justices. That just can't happen.

There's plenty on McSame (none / 0)

to do real well with against him, especially his temper.  Good work on focusing on McSame.  The question is, will this be enough to defeat what is certain nasty politics by the repugs against our candidate?

I think where we get him is by sounding sane, specific, worldly, and also very, very strong.

This is what we need to concentrate on. At this point I think we need to be as dirty as the GOP has been in past years. The election is that important.

Thanks

We are giving up the moral high ground with this kind of thing.

This is not MY democratic party.  If this is the kind of election we're gong to run, it may be my last election as a democrat.

I am confident that we will be dirty enough, but I just hope that if HRC isn't  the nominee . . . that she doesn't try to sabotage the election.

I don't think she will, but Chris Matthews keeps bringing it up. I wish he would quit it!

Re: Recommended (none / 0)

Yeah, shame on Mr. Matthews for reporting that Hillary encourages MI and FL voters to vote Republican.  Shame on him for reporting that Hillary said McCain would be a better Commander in Chief.  Shame on him for reporting that Hillary said McCain would be a better president.

Yes, that is Hillary's biggest nemesis, the truth.

Cut it out Mr. Matthews!  Don't you know the truth hurts!  Play like the rest of the media, and ignore the facts.

Re: Recommended (none / 0)

By the way, nice entry!

I think it's very important to keep his military record off the table.  It's very important to support our troops and their service.  An attack on his military record will be equivalent to attacking all of our troops.  We need to honor those who have been willing to give their lives to protect us.

His record in the Senate, the mistakes that he makes now, and his personality now will give us plenty of material for the election.

Re: What concern trolls don't want you to know abo (2.00 / 1)

I'd like to encourage differentiation among terms here;

some of the comments reflect behavior; his actual voting record, which is a matter of public record and should be part of every campaign, since an individuals performance in their job should be subject to scrutiny.

Torture, and highlighting the U.S. former leadership role in defining this putrid violation of human rights and the Geneva convention is an important point.

Also, he doesn't have the Constitutional chops to restore appropriate powers among governance, and would he leave Bush's power overreach in place?
This would be a crucial question; get him on his perception of what should happen with Bush's legal overreaches and erosion of the Constitution.

Some of the comments reflect hearsay, unless there is concrete evidence -say, Youtube videos_ that clearly demonstrate to anyone the behavior you are alleging.  Hearsay is based on indirect evidence and can be considered "smear" tactics.  Concluding that he is "mentally unstable" may not play well with Vets who often suffer trauma and are apt to be sympathetic, and again, this may be a conclusion without evidence that should be left to trained professionals.

Anger management problems, hair trigger temper demonstrated with videos to evidence would be the only appropriate means of introducing this, otherwise it will be perceived as a "smear".

I'm hoping the smears aren't used unless there is concrete evidence of interactions that support this, in the way of film, or audio.  It undermines the dignity of the campaign, and its a cheesey lobbyist tactic that we need to get away from; the public eats this stuff up, but they shouldn't just buy into it and Rev. Wright was used in this manner.

Let's act our creed.

Deep irony (2.00 / 1)

The irony of Republicans fearing Democratic smear campaigns is almost enough for me to sign off on this... but no, I can't agree to manipulative smear campaigns, no matter who is the target.

Attack McCain on the facts, on his legitimate weaknesses, not on trumped-up garbage.  We can't be seen as allowing this campaign to go dirty.  He's looking for any excuse to break the kindness fascade and go for the throat (the stupid "apology was inadiquite" stuff was obviously setting up for things turning ugly, trying to finagle the blame onto Obama).

We can beat him.  We don't need the smears.

Begala tends to be fair but tough. McCain's record contains more then enough fodder. Flip flops on torture, tax cuts, wanting to stay in Iraq forever, his temper, all fact based effective attacks.

Great diary! Thanks for posting it. (none / 0)

This is what we need -- diaries going after McCain.

* "I think he is mentally unstable and not fit to be president" -- former Rep. John LeBoutillier (R-NY)

Wow, that's harsh.

I don't think McCain should be underestimated, but the only reason he's doing so well against Hillary and Obama in the polls right now is, people don't really know John McCain. The Democrats are constantly under attack and scrutiny, and McCain's coasting. When people find out he has a horrible record when it comes to children, the middle class, etc., his numbers will go way down.

BTW, I was eating while reading this, and when I scrolled down and saw that picture of McCain snarling, I nearly choked. Hilarious. I want to make that into a bumper sticker, or something.

Even John McCain lusts after teh engels.
