Breaking: Something EVERYONE should read

After Super Tuesday, Bloomberg News got their hands on a spreadsheet that was mistakenly sent out by the Obama campaign.  The spreadsheet was a prediction for the contests between then and Denver.   By "then", I mean February 7th.  A month ago.

Before I post a link to the spreadsheet, which Politico displayed a copy of, I'm going to go over the areas where the Obama spreadsheet was wrong.

Ohio by 3 in HRC's favor.
Rhode Island by 3 in HRC's favor.
Vermont by 10 in BO's favor.
Wisconsin by 10 in BO's favor.
Hawaii by 47 in BO's favor.
Maryland by 17 in BO's favor.
DC by 35 in BO's favor.
Virginia by 27 in BO's favor.
Maine by 21 in BO's favor(thus far, this is the only instance when the Obama spreadsheet was wrong on predicting the winner)
Washington by 17 in BO's favor.
Louisiana by 11 in BO's favor.
And finally, Nebraska by 16 in BO's favor.

They were able to call the results of Texas by nearly a month ago.  Now look at the upcoming states.

Does anyone else feel like February 7th was a lot more than one month ago?

Feels like a lifetime ago. But at the same time it feels like just a few days ago. Maybe its some strange time warp.

Re: Breaking: Something EVERYONE should read (2.00 / 2)

First thought. How incredibly amateurish to let something like this leak out. Amateur hour in the White House. Yikes.

Re: Breaking: Something EVERYONE should read (none / 0)

It's hard to call them "amateurs" when they have been so dead-on accurate from a MONTH back.  What did the polls say about TX/OH/VT/RI a month ago?   Oh, and it's debatable if they really leaked it out by accident..  this was after Super Tuesday, which they staggered out of.

Re: Breaking: Something EVERYONE should read (2.00 / 1)

I'm sorry, but you don't intentionally leak you most comprehensive internal campaign strategy documents unless you are either the most clever triple super clever head fake tacticians or just plain over your head. I have my opinion.

Re: Breaking: Something EVERYONE should read (none / 0)

And it's not very objective.  The results speak for themselves, and if the future contests are even close to these..  even if Hillary does better than she's predicted to.. it won't matter.  To make up the pledged-delegate deficit that she has, she needs to be winning by at least fifteen points in every state.  It's more like twenty, really, and she hasn't been doing that.  She's cutting Obama's lead by LESS THAN 10 delegates after last night.   Since yesterday morning, he's picked up another 5 superdelegates.   Hillary's campaign was right to downplay momentum before, but right now.. it's all they have.

Re: Breaking: Something EVERYONE should read (none / 0)

Judging by their success so far they just might be saavy enough to pull the triple head fake off. Oh, and it was quite an effective bit of expectations management-- Obama exceeded even his own teams wildest estimates in Feb., and HRC only barely surpassed what they gave her.

The oven is getting hotter. Almost everyday we are getting some new screw up by the Obama campaign. This is just sad. It makes me feel sorry for them.

But I'm really happy to have the spreadsheet. If you go the the SPREADSHEET LINK you can download it yourself. Nice doc!

Now, I've look at this more. There is no way that this is an intentional leak. Incredible.

Re: Breaking: Something EVERYONE should read (none / 0)

Even assuming that it was an accidental leak, that's one leak for Obama to how many from Hillary's campaign?  The boat is sinking, and the band is still playing..

Try and remember the political mood a month ago when this spreadsheet was "accidentally" sent to reporters.

it seems like Obama's campaign knows how good their ground operations were and the media did not.
Is it supposed to be amazing that Obama's people knew they were well organized in all these February states?

and I also don't understand why you think everyone should read it.

Re: I don't understand the point of the (none / 0)

And if they are geniuses, then just LOOK at the next round of states coming up.  Look at the predicted breakdown.  Look at the one time that this spreadsheet predicted the wrong winner.   Look at the few times when it underestimated Hillary.   Look at how many times that it underestimated Obama.   Just stare into the cold logic of numbers.

Do you suddenly feel like Hillary's momentum is a fairy tale?

Re: I don't understand the point of the (2.00 / 1)

I appreciate the cold logic of numbers THAT HAVE ALREADY HAPPENED.  You can't extrapolate with 100% accuracy.  Cold hard numbers last night favored Clinton, and while I'm not exactly breaking out the celebration keg, things are looking better today.

Re: Breaking: Something EVERYONE should read (none / 0)

I also don't get the point of this diary, and furthermore, unless I'm reading the column wrong, it's predicting more delegates for Clinton...

Re: Breaking: Something EVERYONE should read (none / 0)

It may not be a matter of reading it wrong, but misunderstanding it.  As for the point of this diary..  I keep hearing how us Obama supporters are cultish, are heads are up in the clouds, momentum is nothing, etc.  Then today, all I heard was "Hillary has the momentum," "she's going to win," "Obama should drop out," etc.   I figured it'd be in everyone's best interest to bring people back to reality, and stare at some cold hard numbers.

Re: Breaking: Something EVERYONE should read (none / 0)

That "botched margin" is a hell of a lot closer than most of the polls, the only difference being that this spreadsheet was put together A MONTH AGO.  What did the polls say a month ago?

I think the message is clear; Obama can predict the future.

That's a joke.

Re: Breaking: Something EVERYONE should read (none / 0)

As a RABID spreadsheeter, I can attest to the fact that I generate a variety of spreadsheets on a variety of topics every day that test various scenarios.  To suggest that this is the gold standard for what Obama precisely thought would occur is ridiculous.

Re: make that 5%. Misread.....still, game over.... (none / 0)

From an objective standpoint, you appear to be saying "game over" for Hillary.  A five percent margin of victory, depending on where and how she wins it, will net her a 5-10 delegate advantage coming out of the state.  She needs a lot more than that to cut into a pledged-delegate lead of over 140.

By the way, have you looked at the difference between superdelegates.  She only leads in super delegates by about 40...  he has gained nearly 40 since Super Tuesday while she has LOST 6.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be ambiguous. I meant (2.00 / 1)

"game over" for Obama if she wins Pennsylvania, even by 5%. At that point it will be in the superdelegates hands because neither of them will make it to 2024/25.

Re: Sorry, I didn't mean to be ambiguous. I meant (2.00 / 1)

and you seriously thing they've thwart the will of the electorate by making her the nominee?

lets face it guys, there is no way that the superdelegates are gonna deicde to thwart the will of the majority of voters in the primary, barring something that makes obama unelectable.

and no, losing a bunch of the big states does not make him unelectable.

Re: Breaking: Something EVERYONE should read (2.00 / 1)

You people are so misinformed its a riot all by itself.  Delegates don't matter unless you get the required amount. 2025.  Doesn't matter what the supers are even saying at this point.  None of this stuff even matters.  Its all a show, and an interesting one at that.  The party makes the call.  Always has, always will, the voters are just going along for the ride.  You still just don't get it, do you?  These number games are just that games, unless Obama wins with the magic number, which by his own math he cannot, he doesn't have this nomination, no matter what the delegate count is.  Some delegates are more important than others.  I know it isn't fair, but this was never a fair game and this is not an election.  Its a party nomination.  You just don't understand.  The super delegates are not required to vote for your guy unless he has 2025.  Thats the truth.  I'm not lying to you here.  The total vote number may be something they look at, but it will be based on which states, how much margin, how many states with no chance this fall, all that is taken into consideration, not the pure numbers.  I know it sucks but that is the way this party has done it for years, and these super delegates are not swayed by all this chatter either.  They will take a look at the states we need this fall to win, consider which candidate can carry the other's voters, and right now?  If those voters in Ohio were going to vote for Obama, they already would have.  That is why these big dem states are more important this fall because we must carry those in the fall, if Obama looks shaky in those states, he will not get this nomination, no matter what you think is fair or the claim that somehow this is being taken away from him, he doesn't have it, so it can't be taken away from him.

Great point, Setrak.  I noticed this too -- and in fact, the spreadsheet's predictions for March 4 are likely to be within a few delegates of the overall results.

I go into more detail on this (looking at the delegate count) in The day after: an essay on narrative and strategy" on my blog Liminal States ... is still a draft, so I'd love to hear people's feedback.
