Hillary Clinton: Our Comeback Champion

This wasn't supposed to happen yesterday. We weren't supposed to be talking about this today. Weren't we supposed to be talking about Hillary Clinton dropping out and "Hillary leaving for the good of the party"?

Whoops... I guess the media once again declared Hillary dead before she came roaring back to life. (Follow me after the flip for more on last night's stunner...)

So what really happened yesterday? How did Hillary pull off a real miracle? Well, let's take a look behind the wins and see the real numbers.

Take a look at Rhode Island. See how the women stood with Hillary? Take a look at Ohio. See how blue-collar "lunch bunket Democrats" rallied to Hillary's side? Take a look at Texas. See how Latinos stuck with the one and only "Hilaria"?

Come on, everyone! We're looking at the very coalition we need to win this fall! Latinos. Women. Blue-collar workers. These are the people we need to vote for our Democratic nominee en masse if we want to take back the White House this fall. And who's been working hard this whole year to make sure these folks vote Democratic this year? Hillary is!

Who's been talking about the real issues that our voters care about? Hillary has. Who's always been fighting for quality, affordable health care for all Americans? Hillary has. Who's ready to implement an economic recovery plan to help working families get back on their feet? Hillary is. Who's proposed an energy plan that will actually do something to solve the climate crisis and make our nation energy independent? Hillary has. And who's ready to end the Bush-Cheney era of "cowboy diplomacy" by hitting Mccain on national security... And winning? Hillary is.

So there you have it. This is why Hillary made her remarkable comeback last night, and this is why Hillary may very well keep fighting all the way to the White House next year. The polls now show Hillary gaining momentum. The primary is still far from over. Hillary made her comeback, and all the pundits predicting her ultimate demise today are now being forced to eat crow.

So what can we all do to help Hillary stay competitive in the upcoming primary states? We can contribute to ensure that Hillary has all the necessary resources to stay in this fight for us. We can volunteer to ensure that Hillary has the manpower AND the womanpower to keep winning all these important states. We can get active and stay active so that Hillary knows we have her back. Today may be a great day for celebration, but let's also remember that we have a long road ahead of us to get to Denver this summer... And ultimately, to get to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. next January.

So come on, let's do it! I'm sure we made a special someone originally from Texas prod last night. Let's make this entire nation proud again by helping Hillary become our comeback champion.

:-)

Cameback and heading down the home stretch (2.00 / 6)

I think this is the final comeback that will be needed by our lady in this primary season.  She's off and running while Senator Obama is busy dealing with something he's not at all familiar with.

The press.

Re: Whiner. (none / 0)

She's had great press.  If BHO was the one with an insurmountable elected delegate deficit there would be calls for him to get out of the race, but you don't hear calls for HRC.

Also, the HRC camp has used racist fear to falsely attack BHO (for sure: staffers sending BHO is a Muslim emails, made up madrassa story http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/01/22/o bama.madrassa/ , HRC on 60 minutes    maybe: African garb photo, darkening BHO in ad)

And there are many things about HRC that don't get played up:  Norman H., Peter P., pardon FALN terrorists for HRC's Puerto Rican votes, where's the money from http://thememlingindex.com/hillary_clint on_net_worth-wealth.html
, the 9-11 (Paragraph #274 (on page 48))report says Clinton foriegn policy actions inspired Bin Ladin  to do 9-11, IPA http://deepbackground.msnbc.msn.com/arch ive/2008/02/29/718285.aspx
, selling out http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/editor blog/034 ,bad for Democrats http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200102/sc hneider

And there is more.

Re: Hillary Clinton: Our Comeback Champion (2.00 / 4)

As I've said before.. Hillary kicks tail in States that have a primary vote, not a caucus, because caucuses are too easily manipulated and unregulated. Had all the states been simple voting, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Obama would be out of the race by now.

I was SO hoping that the groupthink screaming for Hillary to bow out would be eating their words today! Ha!  I do believe they've been served!

The truth is Hillary could take the national vote against McCain. Obama wouldn't stand a chance against real scrutiny.  "8 Questions?" That probably sounds like reasonable vetting to a guy that bases his entire foreign policy experience on a speech he made for a State Senate job.

Don't worry. (none / 0)

You realize that dispite your crowing, Hillary didn't make up nearly enough ground in delegates and she's still most likely to lose, right?

Re: Don't worry. (2.00 / 1)

Yeah, it looks like she netted a total of 4 delegates. So if this ratio is informative- net 4 delegates out of a total of 370, then among the remaining 611 delegates she can probably hope to pick up between 5-7 more delegates. Hahaha. Or if you want to be generous and assume she does better due to "momentum"- maybe she'll pick up 20-30? And still be well over 100 delegates behind in her best case scenario.

I know the facts. (none / 0)

I'm not interested in Turkana's "need to win big states" meaningless spin.

I know the supers' split will most likely decide the nominee.  You and Turkana seem to think they will move as a block depending on which candidate better rationalizes their advantage.  I don't.  I think they'll go with their natural inclinations towards one candidate or the other.  And in a 2-way race, any institutional bias will be against overturning the pledged delegate totals.

Better pray Hillary gets FL, MI and Edwards' delegates.  She's going to need them.

by corph on Thu Mar 06, 2008 at 11:05:54 AM EST
[ Parent ]

Of course I don't, to you. (none / 0)

You can only understand what you want to read.  Show me statements by uncommitted supers who say who edges out whom in big-state primaries will be the critical factor in their decision and I'll take you and Turkana seriously.

Oh, and that "big state winner" meme?  Let's look at the top five:

1. California: solid Clinton win

  1. Texas: narrow Clinton popular win in the primary, caucus and overall delegate loss
  2. New York: Clinton home-state win
  3. Florida: either non-campaigning win, irrelevant win or win nullified by subsequent vote
  4. Illinois: Clinton loss to home-stater

If NY and IL are a wash (which is generous because Obama won the net delegate split between the two), Texas and Florida at best marginal vicories, Clinton's "big state" dominence means, essentially, that she won California.  Sure that's good enough to sway 200 supers to go against the pledged total and the probable popular vote total?

So, McCain would be a plausible choice for Hillary's coalition of voters/supporters...

Congrats Hillary-folk, she did do a great job. Of course, that's measured against losing 12 in a row and not against polls in the state just after Wisconsin or in terms of net delegates. But it is a great step forward for her. I think she definitely strengthened her claim to be the candidate in 2012 if Obama loses in 2008.

How can someone like me, on a fixed income and tight budget, still help the campaign. I have donated what I can, when I can. And I will continue to do so. But I'm not physically able to travel, which is a moot point, because I couldn't afford it anyway. I don't have a regular cell phone plan, just a trac phone, because I only use it for emergencies. So phone calling is out, because it would get really expensive, really fast. So what's left for somebody like me who wants to help Hillary become the nominee, and then our next President? Any suggestions from people who know more than I do?

Re: I have a question for you experts. (2.00 / 1)

"So what's left for somebody like me who wants to help Hillary become the nominee, and then our next President? Any suggestions... "

One of the very best things anyone can do is to KEEP WRITING IN TO MEDIA to support Hillary. Write letters to the editor of your local media in particular, they are far more likely to be published for many others to see. Also weigh in with national media, they will only publish letters and viewpoints when they receive a very substantial number of comments that echo each other, so even if your viewpoint is not published, it will contribute to at least one comment getting published that represents the collective view, which otherwise would not have had enough support and significance to be published.

If you have time, submit op-eds to local media  clarifying HRC's positions on issues and why you support her. Weigh in on news articles and editorials online where there is the opportunity for "reader responses" and comments. Contest articles and TV news reports that mislead and mischaracterize Hillary's positions. Write in to blogs supporting Hillary, and especially wade into hostile territory online to state your support in a dignified and powerful manner, don't let others' bullying define the issues.

We never know who might be influenced by reading our contributions into supporting Hillary, and our participation can sway votes. This is free media, and we deserve a shot at being heard.

Vote for Hillary in online polls, it shows how many people are supporting her.

Keep writing in your support right here, we keep each other strong, and feeling like we are not alone.

Every bit of public support for Hillary is valuable. Now that includes online visibility, so many more people can participate.

Wear a button, sticker and put a sign in your window for Hillary. It all counts.

Won't Obama net more delegates from Tuesday than Clinton, once the Texas caucus results are in? Doesn't that make Obama the winner?

by Quarterbackjoe on Wed Mar 05, 2008 at 11:25:33 PM EST

Re: Question (none / 0)

Nope. That argument actually weakens Obama case when it comes to delegates. If the person who lost the vote gets more delegates then why should we nominate someone like that? A person who can work the system but can't get people to actually vote for them?

Back before Jerome jumped the shark (none / 0)

he wrote this book called "Crashing the Gate" that talked about among other things the 50 state strategy.

Guess what? Obama is getting more votes. It's Hillary who's working the system nationally, just like Bill did, picking and choosing among certain states to try to wrap up the nomination. If she's nominated and continues that behavior into the general election, democrats down ticket will suffer, just like they did during Clinton's campaigns.

Hillary had a good day on Tuesday, there's no question.  But she has to have a few concerns:

1.) Delegate math.

2.) Delegate math.

3.) Delegate math.

4.) Her BEST week combined with Obama's WORST week netted her (according to RCP) 13 delegates, with about 13 left to be allocated.  That won't cut it.

No way. No how. No McCain.

Re: Hillary Clinton: Our Comeback Champion (2.00 / 1)

Even if she finishes behind in the pledged delegate count, she could finish ahead in the popular vote and win the majority of the super delegates by persuading them that she's is the voters choice.

Don't a lot of Obama supporters on here find it strange to be supporting the candidate who is the choice of Republican and Independent voters rather than of Democratic voters?

Why have Obama supporters invented this idea that super delegates should vote for whoever wins the most pledged delegates?

Re: Hillary Clinton: Our Comeback Champion - Never (none / 0)

*"There are certain critical issues that voters always look to in a general election. National security experience (and) the qualifications to be commander-in-chief are front and center. They always have been. They always will be," she said.

She said she and McCain had traveled to Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan together as she repeated a line that surfaced from the campaign trail. She and McCain "bring a lifetime of experience to the campaign, Clinton said, while "Sen. Obama will bring a speech he gave in 2002," stating his opposition to the Iraq war as an Illinois state senator.*

Isn't it wonderful to know your candidate prefers Republicans! What a stupid cow, Clinton is.

My sentiments exactly. I've been saying for months he needs to start his own party instead of trying to corrupt the Democratic Party with his Republican friends. But it seem to me that he thinks he can say the up is down and we should just believe him. Looks like he is starting to believe his own publicity.

Comeback to triangulation/gridlock/deception and warmongering.

Love your candidate, she is so progressive! So progressive that she is breaking the Democratic party by praising Republicans and campaigning for a Republican in the fall.

Wake up!

Re: Hillary Clinton: Our Comeback Champion (none / 0)

Come On, Hillary supporters!  We gotta contribute again and raise money for her next state contests----I'm contributing tomorrow because I get paid, and I'll contribute again soon!  Hillary can't do it without us!!!

Become experts on at least 2 points where Hillary is better than the other candidate, so we can convince people in the next states.....Healthcare and foreign policy!   Also, the other candidate has NOT even mentioned being able to do anything for women......Hillary is a CHAMPION of WOMEN and CHILDREN!!!!  Contact women that you know in Wyoming and Pennsylvania and get them to vote for Hillary.

From now until June is the MOST IMPORTANT TIME in the race----help build Hillary's support and case for her to argue for the Super-Delegates' vote!

GO, Hillary, GO!!  We're behind you all the way!

Re: Hillary Clinton: Our Comeback Champion (none / 0)

man... i understand, you love hillary.. but common, people. dont delude yourself. she has already lost.

if the situation were switched, everyone, media included, would be counting Barack Obama out.

it doesnt matter what i say; the facts remain that unless she gets a landslide majority of superdels, there is no way she is winning the nomination.

for your own sake, come to terms with it. With grace.

Re: Hillary Clinton: Our Comeback Champion (none / 0)

Hillary won all the big states except Illinois , which count towards victory in the general election. Getting delegates was just a game to get more people registered as democrats. That will be very useful in the general election .Obama won a whole bunch of small states and that also Caucus states. There are no Caucuses in the general election. The electoral vote method gives more advantage to the big states and that is the way the constitution was set up so that states with larger populations have more say in the selection of the next President.

There are no Caucuses in The General Election. Caucus votes are totally manipulated that is why Obama won because of the Caucus votes spending his supporters hard earned money 2:1 but the real thing is the Primary . He lost by 4% points. We are not playing GAMES anymore. Be realistic & go for the Dream Ticket. The General Election is like the Primary election with Winner Take all like the Republicans are doing. They have a winner and if we use the same method , we have a winner. DNC should stop the GAMES

Even now in Texas , Hillary won Texas in the Primary and Obama won in the Caucus part of the election. Nowhere else in the world , Caucuses are done to run any election . Caucuses can easily be manipulated by hiring a lot of volunteers for $100 to $1000 for one or two week period. These paid volunteers then bring all their friends to come to attend the Caucus and the candidate who spent the most money for hiring paid volunteers wins the Caucus. Since Obama raised more money , he spent more on hiring these paid volunteers mostly university students and unemployed workers and this is why he won all the caucus states. These are only games that Obama has been playing to win a large number of small caucus states and other states where he was able to outspend Hillary 4 to 1 .
The GAMES are now over. The election in November is the real thing .The winner takes all the electoral votes in any state even though he wins by only one vote in that state. No more Caucuses and no more 4 to 1 money advantage to one candidate over the other. The Obama supporters should now wake up and gracefully nominate Hillary Clinton, as she has already won all the big states . Obama's inexperience clearly shows here but it is too late for him. Hillary has 263 electoral votes from all the states she has won. Obama has 190 electoral votes. Do not feel bad Mr. Obama. You will still be the Vice Presidential candidate and sooner you realize that the sooner we will start getting ready for the Republicans. We need to win more senate seats and house seats.
Wake up Chairman Howard Dean !!! You are destroying the Democratic Party by not seating Florida & Michigan. Mr. Obama , you have been claiming that you can unite the country. This is the time for you to unite the Democratic party. If you cannot unite the democrats , how are you going to unite the country? To do great things , you have to make great sacrifices. You are not winning the big states and winning mostly red states. Democrats can never win without the big states. So please agree to be the vice presidential candidate and beat the Republicans with the Dream Ticket. After 8 years you will be ready to be the President
Mr. Obama, It takes sacrifice to make great progress and a revolution . You have to think of the country and not your own interests. You have to think out of the BOX. Kennedy laid down his life so that Civil Rights legislation could be passed , under which you got admission to Harvard without which nobody would even elect you a senator in ILL. Martin Luther King laid down his life for the same reason. Gandhi was shot dead but the Hindus & Moslems now live in Peace in India because of his sacrifice. A president of Egypt and a Prime Minister of Israel sacrificed their lives so that Israel & Egypt can live in Peace. Jesus Christ lost his life on the cross for all of us. You have 14 months of experience in the US senate out of which you spent 14 months running for presidency. This is too little experience to become the President of USA & the most powerful person in the world. It is about time to make sacrifice to unite the Democratic Party and wait your turn 8 years from now. Vote for the DREAM TICKET !!!

Re: Hillary Clinton: Our Comeback Champion (none / 0)

Yeah, except that even if she wins every remaining contest(which she most definitely won't), she'll still trail in pledged delegates.

That's some comeback...

Re: Hillary Clinton: Our Comeback Champion (none / 0)

I see that the TV media finally has started thinking that Clinton is the better candidate than Obama after bashing her since Jan 1. Also notice that all the Afro American commentators side with Obama all the time. How racist can you get ?CNN specially is anti Clinton. Donna Brazille, Kelli Goff and Amy Holmes ( who is supposed to be representing the Republicans) always talk against Clinton. Similarly Gwn Ifill ( another Afro American) on PBS and Meet The Press always talks against Clinton. Shame on you all. 50% of the commentators on CNN are Afro Americans and are 100% of the time talking against Clinton. These are the same commentators who would not have any jobs if they were not Afro Americans. Obama should not be made President because he has only 14 months experience in US senate out of which he spent 14 months running for presidency
Executive Level experience is what is needed. and to be president national level experience is what is important.. Obama has none.. Hillary  was Governor's wife in Arkansas  for 8 years and later for 8 years' President's wife. She was not just a housewife. Being an attorney herself and a  smart politician she was constantly advising Clinton and was his right hand person. Bill was named the best Governor  and he was the best President with no deficits and strong economy under his administration and you have to give a lot of credit to her as well.
