Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) on Obama

Just in from HuffPo:

Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) said last night that, among the 3 remaining candidates, he thought Barack Obama had the best chance of bringing the country together. While he did not dismiss McCain (he's done that in the Senate) or Clinton (she's had some success in the Senate, not as much as McCain), he said that he believed that Barack Obama, for generational reasons, could best bring the country together.

Hagel also stated that he believes the inventory of problems the next President will face is unprecedented and that that is why it is so important that the country be brought together so that it could really solve problems.

Hagel, who is retiring from the Senate and, for awhile, from public life, pointed to data showing 81% of the country believe we are on the "wrong-track", that registration numbers show Republicans to be in the teens and Independents higher than Democrats, and that trust in Congress and the President is at all time lows.

"In a democracy", said Hagel, "people push something else out there" to take the place or transform institutions. He believes that that is what this election will ultimately be about.

Talk about building a coalition.

Re: Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) on Obama (2.00 / 1)

I feel like I am picking on you tonight and that is not my purpose, but "anything obama can do, hillary can do better".  Seriously, you should have left that part out and kept the second line.  I don't think she is trying to divide the country either and I am not full of Hillary hate like some people are here are.  But Obama is viewed as a uniter right now and many people are attracted to that, me included.  My hug I sent your way in your diary still stands, but you have to at least see how Hagel saying this is a fairly big deal.

I just got back from a track meet and my team kicked some butt so I am in a good mood.  There seems to be more civil and humorous posters online tonight as well so I am enjoying myself.  Need to get more people to recommend your Adams diary though.

Obama's Healthcare Program.. (2.00 / 2)

will continue the PROFITABLE BUSINESS of DIVIDING us into healthcare HAVES and HAVE-NOTS

Obama's Student Aid Program.. will further DIVIDE this nation into those who can afford a good education, or have the CONNECTIONS to get one, like he did, and those of us who DON'T, who will look forward to lives of unexplored promise at best, and starvation or criminality at worst...

Obama's cargo cult economics builds on the common sense (NOT) of "if we BUILD it, they will COME" which doesn't make economic sense, lots of other factors come into play.

America is still the envy of the world in some ways, but we are FRITTERING OUR FUTURE AWAY..

Obama is a DIVIDER, not a UNITER..  Why can't he see, like Hillary says, WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER..

That's the PEOPLE, not just the corporations..

Universal healthcare IS a core Democratic value
Comprehensively cover 100%, not only the healthiest 80%

Re: Obama's Healthcare Program.. (none / 0)

you really have drunk the kool-aid for your side.  Neither candidate is a divider, they are both great candidates and nearly identical on every issue.  We would be lucky to have either one as President.

Obama's plans leading to starvation?  LOL Take a deep breathe and calm down.

And HRC has?

Re: Bring the country together??? (none / 0)

Nobody's making that false claim.  HRC's claim is that she'll work hard to fix this country's problems.  I don't want to live in a country where we all think alike, do things alike, and live a false sense of "unity."  This is a nation of individuals---with all our wonderful differences.

I think that Hagel (none / 0)

will be Obama's head of the Department of the Defense.

Obama really respects him.

That's good to hear. Pretty funny that he threw his fellow GOP "maverick" under the bus like that.

Difference is that Hagel's a Maverick (none / 0)

on the war, and maybe some other foreign policy.

McCain is NOT a maverick on foreign policy. He may well be to the right of the GOP at large.

Re: Difference is that Hagel's a Maverick (2.00 / 1)

Yeah, that's why I put maverick in quotes. I can't wait for the general election, when we'll be able to turn both barrels on McCain's mind-numbing flip-flops on just about everything.

He was against waterboarding, Falwell, overturning Roe and making Bush's tax cuts permanent before he was for them. He's such a maverick, he even opposes himself.

I just keep imagining him in a debate against Obama or even Clinton.  They will eat him alive.

Re: Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) on Obama (none / 0)

I have Hagel on my shortlist of VP for Obama.  It wouldn't shock me if he went for a unity ticket with a moderate Republican.

I doubt it, but it wouldn't shock me.

It'd be pretty cool. I think Kerry/McCain could've won in '04, hands down.

Hooray for John McCain!

Re: Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) on Obama (none / 0)

That actually would have been a powerhouse ticket against Bush.  Can you even imagine the hatred that would have been thrown at him for siding with a Democrat though?  Would have been worth it to see Hannity and Rush's head explode.

Re: Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) on Obama (2.00 / 1)

what is wrong with you guys or gals? You seriously want a conservative republican anti choice politician as the VP! Can you name one single republican who publicly condemned SCOTUS for stopping Florida recount or for that matter Dan Burton for investigating who was going to pay for the dog food for Bill Clinton;s dog? And you think these republicans want to "unite".What evidence of unity can you show coming out of the republicans?

Re: Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) on Obama (none / 0)

  4. Gephardt
  5. Hagel
  6. Feingold

no biden?  A lot of my pro-obama friends are calling for Hillary as VP.  I am definitely warming up to the idea but am probably still too stuck in the weeds at the moment to think that far ahead.
