While We Argue Candidates, Congress Is Set To SCREW US!

While We Argue Candidates Congress is set to SCREW US by giving bush what he wants AGAIN!

I am keeping this short because I am truly with out words, except the four letter variety.

House Democratic leadership: not just complicit but also self-destructive

The signs are unmistakably clear that what was always inevitable -- full compliance by the House Democratic leadership with Bush's demands on warrantless eavesdropping and telecom amnesty -- is now imminent.

Re: How about (2.00 / 1)

I had a feeling this was coming.

When will the democratically controlled congress finally start to defend the people of this nation?

I guess we just need to get more and better democrats.  The leadership of this congress has been dismal.

Speaking of which.. I recently heard an old galager joke on the subject:

"If Con is the opposite of Pro
Then Congress is the opposite of Progress."

Re: While We Argue Candidates, Congress Is Set To (none / 0)

And people wonder why some of us Obama supporters would LOVE to have Hillary stay in the Senate. Reid has got to go, and she has the characteristics of a great majority leader.  That's not to say she wouldn't be a decent President, just saying.. she strikes me as someone BUILT for that role.

I would like to see (2.00 / 1)

Russ Feingold in that role. But I don't think that will happen, unfortunately.

If Hillary Clinton gets into the White House, her triangulation strategy will have you feeling screwed a lot more often than this.

Would you PLEASE let that shit go for a moment? I could knock that all over but I won't.

Re: BULLSHIT! (none / 0)

Didn't Senator Clinton skip this vote?  I'd say that qualifies as relevant to the subject at hand, not to mention extraordinarily hypocritical, considering her lambasting of Obama's Illinois legislature voting record and argument that he hasn't been doing his job in the Senate.

This vote (none / 0)

no.

The last votes, yes. Why, I am not sure.

Why you feel the need to do the Obama and Clinton thing here is beyond me.

Re: This vote (none / 0)

Because it's an important issue and we're simultaneously in the midst of an election?

Seems reasonable to me.

This is unbelievable. (2.00 / 1)

Oh wait, no it isn't. This is just par for the course. We'll be kicking Bush to the curb in less than a year, and Congress is still squeamish about standing its ground and pushing back. Don't these people have any principles at all?

Have you guys had commercials running about this ALL THE TIME? I can hardly count how many times I've had to watch that stupid commercial urging people to call their Representatives and tell them to, "Do their jobs by approving the Senate's version of the bill." Annoying as hell. I guess it probably terrified plenty of ignorant Republicans.

I'm only here to look for engels. Screw the rest of this big blue craphole.

Re: This is unbelievable. (none / 0)

I've seen it way too many times..  At any rate, I'm starting to think twice about Democratic chances in the fall.  Even though all indications are that Obama is not a focus at all of the Rezko trial(mostly the Governor and a handful of members from both parties in the state), I think it's going to continue to be used extensively against him if he's the nominee.  The floodgate wasn't opened by the Republicans, so they could continue going at it against him with their hands being left fairly clean.  That name, "Rezko", is just.. such a bad name.

Then there's Hillary.  I think she could get maimed.  I hesitated on supporting Edwards and Clinton because of their plans for universal health care.  Mandates are such a huge bullseye.. and there's plenty of data coming out of Massachusetts to attack it.   Her tax returns.. I don't know what the hell is in there and why she hasn't released them already to stop speculation.  WH schedule..  donors to the Presidential Library.. word has had it for awhile that Murdoch has been keeping an eye on Bill since he left the WH, and while I'm doubtful as always on rumors, there's talk of another.. ugh, not even going into it.

Whoever comes out with the Democratic nomination is not walking out, there'll be limping out and facing a firing squad of giddy right-wing slashers-and-burners.  Their 527's are already prepared and funded for the GE, we're still trying to figure out if it's Obama or Clinton that we'll be marching into the line of fire.

Re: This is unbelievable. (none / 0)

Too true. I think a lot of Democrats are becoming overconfident, which is dangerous. Yes, the turnout is huge. But in '88, Democratic turnout in the primaries was nearly double Republican turnout; when the general election rolled around, however, it didn't matter.

I don't know what's up with Hillary's tax returns, but I doubt that would hurt her much during the GE. Hillary has been maimed before, and I don't think the GOP could do much to make her look worse. They can make the people who already hate her decide that they hate her more, but the people who discarded the rumors about the Clintons' "involvement in murders" and god knows what else won't be affected by the Right's rumor-mongering. What really might do her in, though, is a large percentage of African Americans feeling somehow cheated or disenfranchised. If Obama loses the nomination, I think there will be some real resentment in the AA community, and who could blame them? Some of them might not turn out on election day. Also, enraged college kids are scary. I'm afraid that they might not just refuse to vote for Hillary -- they might vote McCain out of spite.

And Obama will have a really rough time, too. Right now, national polls indicate that he's more "electable" than Hillary when they go head-to-head against McCain. But people forget, the MSM and the GOP have been vilifying her for years. The fact that there's only a few points difference between McCain/Obama and McCain/Clinton is incredible. And even in these early polls, Obama isn't beating McCain by much. His numbers have nowhere to go but down. At this point back in 2004, wasn't Kerry polled as beating Bush by about 12 points? That didn't turn out so well.

Obama's healthcare plan strikes me as being nearly as "dangerous" as Hillary's/Edwards' in the GE. He has a mandate, too, and the qualifier, "Only for children!" won't mean much to a lot of people. It's still a mandate, and Hillary's argument that it's a bad idea to mandate healthcare for children without also mandating it for the breadwinners of the family is a good one. Republicans won't forget it. Oddly enough, I don't think Rezko will turn out to be a big deal. All politicians have "scandals". The only way this hurts him is it undermines that message of hope and change, "an escape from the politics of old." Maybe the whole scandal is a nonissue, but it casts doubt -- it makes people think, "Is he just another politician?" Right now, this whole NAFTA thing is mainly an issue because OH is coming up tomorrow. But as time goes on, little nit-picky things (that many Obama supporters are quick to shrug off) will start to add up, especially when the media decides it's more exciting to trash him than to sing his praises. Some of that is already starting. November is a long way away, and if enough disillusionment sets in, he might not turn out the numbers we've come to expect. And if people think the GOP won't find a way to paint him as a closet Muslim with an unpatriotic wife, they're living in a fantasy world.

Also, I think people are underestimating the number of women who may have some pretty bitter feelings towards both Obama and the media if he wins the nomination. If Hillary loses, there's going to be a LOT of analysis trying to figure out exactly what went wrong and how this could have happened -- and it won't focus solely on her campaign's frequent bouts of incompetence. Sexism has played a role in this, whether people want to admit it or not. Look at Chris Matthews. He can call her a "she-devil" and get away with it, but we'd skewer the bastard if he made a pseudo-racist remark. Racism is often blatant, whereas sexism can be much more subtle.

And McCain is a war hero. His background comes across as being a lot more honorable and courageous than that of either Democratic candidate. The far Right may dislike him, but not as much as they hate Democrats. They'll rally their base. He will be difficult to beat.

Re: This is unbelievable. (none / 0)

A thoughtful analysis, however I have to disagree about the sexism.  That's NOT to say that it hasn't happened, or that it's right, because it's just as bad as racism.  HOWEVER...  let's rewind to one year ago.  She had more support from men than any other candidate, even from the AA community.  She had more support from everyone.
Sexism, like racism, is a mind set.  It's a perception.  If it's there, it's been there for awhile. While sure, there are plenty who'll never vote for her because she's a woman.. it's not like all of us guys are named "Chris Matthews."   She began to lose her support amongst guys after "the moment".  She lost support from the AA community because, naturally, they saw Obama and were like "wow we have a chance!"
What did Hillary Clinton do wrong?
Doyle and Penn.
