Each day the news of global warming and the climate change brings us updated information that shows a worsening trend. The affects are happening faster and with more intensity. This is something we must confront and deal with immediately, if not sooner (if only we COULD go back in time).
Yesterday [even] CNN reported that a size the state of Connecticut has just broken from the Antarctic shelf.
Massive ice shelf on verge of breakup
(CNN) -- Some 220 square miles (570 square kilometers) of ice has collapsed in Antarctica and an ice shelf about the size of Connecticut is "hanging by a thread," the British Antarctic Survey has said, blaming global warming.
First was this bad news.
Scambos alerted the British Antarctic Survey after he noticed part of the Wilkins ice shelf disintegrating on February 28, when he was looking at NASA satellite images."The amazing thing was, we saw it within hours of it beginning, in between the morning and the afternoon pictures of that day," Scambos said of the large chunk that broke away on February 28.
But then more further melting occurred.
Another 220 square miles -- including the chunk that Scambos spotted -- had splintered from the ice shelf as of March 8, the group said."As of mid-March, only a narrow strip of shelf ice was protecting several thousand kilometers of potential further break-up," the group said.
It put the size of the threatened shelf at about 5,571 square miles, comparable to the state of Connecticut, or about half the area of Scotland.
We need to start taking bold action as soon as possible. I am a huge Al Gore supporter. As Mr. Gore says, while personal habits help, we must make the changes, the policy, at the top, to limit the CO2 that causes Global Warming and start conserving, sustain and utilizing and creating new technologies that will give us renewable energy.
Hillary agrees with this. Hillary has the best policy for a healthier, sustainable and propersous future.
The other thing that struck me, was when back in March of 2007 Mr. Gore testified on Global Warming on Capitol Hill to both the House and the Senate. When Hillary had the chance to speak with Al Gore and she asked him very specific questions. You knew she listened well. She questioned the Cap and Trade vs a Carbon Tax, when he replied he believes we need to do both. And he favors decreasing business’ payroll tax in lieu of the Carbon Tax. So they pay according to the pollution they put in to the environment. But, what also delighted me, besides other recommendations, renewable energies, etc, was more on the policy that he talked about. I remember when Al Gore brought up a Connie Mae program that could be used to mortgage GREEN building of homes, making it affordable to build new homes with the GREEN technology. She was intrigued by that. I remember her remarks so vividly. Well, as we’ve learned, she keeps her word. From Health Care to Global Warming and everything in between, including taking up John Edwards living wage of $9.50 per hour. She put this Connie Mae in her policy, along with very specific items that makes her far more GREEN than the opponents.
Another very important issue was that she wasn’t the candidate pushing Liquid Coal, that would have placed so much CO2 into the environment, it had environmentalists protesting for over 6 months to pull the support (it was the 2nd attempt). And as even Robert Kennedy, Jr stated when he endorsed her, besides Hillary’s experience and knowing she’ll get things done, this issue is of particular interest and importance to him as well, as a long time advocate for the environment and works with NRDC. She is also not in favor of using Nuclear Energy as a means, unlike the other candidates,
Hillary also has something else. She proposes an increase in CAFÉ standards to 55 mpg. She proposes a GREEN Collar Jobs program, training and creating an entire new field of good paying jobs while moving forward in renewable technologies and investing in rebuilding our infrastructure. But also, 10 "Smart Grid City" partnerships to prove the advanced capabilities of smart grid and other advanced demand-reduction technologies, as well as new investment in plug-in hybrid vehicle technologies. And Hillary has also joined the call to phase out energy wasting incandescent bulbs.
There really is so much in her policy for Energy Independence and Global Warming, you can check it out .here.
We have to start moving on this immediately. And given Hillary’s drive, take action and solutions, she hits the ground running as we’ve seen these many years-from starting to work on Health Care within 3 days of the Bill Clinton administration, to keeping her promise to visit the troops in Bosnia, even though it was still a dangerous war zone.
We need Hillary’s experience, kept promises, policy and can-do attitude to solve these many issues we are facing.
