"Straight Talk"? Really?

Has Politico's Republican presidential race blogger come under the spell of St. John? I mean, I expect it from traditional media hacks, but Jonathan Martin always seemed more savvy than the headline of his latest post about McCain would suggest:

McCain offers straight talk on money deficit

I thought referring to McCain as someone who actually offers straight talk was the stuff of parody, yet here Martin seems to offer this headline without a wink or a sense of any irony at all. And a look at what it was that inspired the headline makes it more bizarre still:

"I have to admire the fundraising accomplishments of Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton," McCain said, speaking to reporters in the aisle of his cushier, post-primary jet.  "They've done a fine job."

In February, McCain raised just $11 million, while Clinton brought in $35 million and Obama, $55 million.

"We have to re-energize our party, re-energize our donor base, and we're doing that," he said.  "But we've got our work cut out for us. The numbers don't lie," he added with a smile and a knowing laugh.

I know the current administration is reality- and truth-challenged, but McCain shouldn't be rewarded with a reinforcement of a positive frame every time he simply acknowledges reality. Seriously, this "straight talk" crap has to end just as much as the "maverick" crap does. Repeat after me: John McCain is a panderer and a political opportunist of the highest order and has manipulated the press into buying into a narrative about him as someone who trafficks in the truth. Jonathan, come on, man, you know better than this.

I certainly hope that the mounting pile of crap that is the sum and summit of the McCain lies, misstatements, misguidance and horseshit we are going to be fed between now and November convinces all Hillary and Obama supporters--no matter who wins the nomination--to vote McCain's craggy, sneaky, Keating-humping, war-mongering, economics-unknowing, puckery white ass back to the Senate.

I don't get it?  how can you be so against McCain and so in favor of Obama and Clinton?  They are all the same.

The only real difference in the three is that McCain is prepared to stay in the war and Obama is not, Hillary hasn't decided.  The differences between these candidates is so minute that you could change their faces and swap them around and know one would know...well maybe Chelsae would have some inkling about her mother?

Take another look pal, these power hungry fools only want one thing, and it's not to serve you.

Well, the media has always had a love story with (none / 0)

McCain. They like him a lot and they go as far as not reporting damaging stories. I do not expect this to stop, and he is going to ride it as long as it lasts.

The media has always had a weakness for mavericks. And McCain is the quintessential maverick in DC , i mean i will not vote for him, but i have to admit that he is gutsy. He took way more unpopular stands in his party that is truly a miracle that he is now the nominee.

Jonathan Martin (none / 0)

He came over from the National Review, so I'm not surprised.

Heh. (2.00 / 1)

"But we've got our work cut out for us. The numbers don't lie,"

Yeah, but the republicans do. Every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Re: Heh. (none / 0)

ooh, I get it now.  Only republicans lie.  I had no idea before now that the Democrats were so righteous?

I have looked and looked and have never seen a democrat lie about anything, in fact I believe I am safe in saying that everyone should believe without doubt, every word out of every democratic politician.  I think its time to start living our lives in complete acquiescence to all that is spoken by these upright and nearly perfect leaders.

To further explain my point lets look at both the democratic front runners.  They are so truthful and act in such an upright manner that how could any one doubt their sincerity?

The only other problem I have regarding your blatant ignorance is the fear I have that you may someday be a politician.

We may disagree on here about Obama or Clinton but I think we can all agree that McCain offers NOTHING more than a third term of the Bush/Cheney disaster.

....and to members of the media out there:

FOR GODSSAKE, STOP GIVING MCCAIN A FREE PASS!!!

Re: "Straight Talk"? Really? (none / 0)

I thought that's what Hillary thought about Obama?  a free pass?  Hmm, perhaps the problem is not with the candidates of either party but of our inability to elect truly capable, honest leaders who really want to serve the public.

Re: "Straight Talk"? Really? (none / 0)

McCain's standing? He caved on McCain/Kennedy, "admitting" he "learned" that we have to secure the border before we reform the naturalization process. He caved on Bush tax cuts for the rich, now saying he wants to make them permanent. He supported the surge when no one else did? That view wasn't going to cost him any votes in the Republican primaries, it would just show how strong he was. McCain's even caved on Jerry Falwell and the Christian right wing!

How is that NOT opportunism?

Its called power...

That's all they want, its all they ever really want.  It's time for a real change.  Change it all before it's too late.
