Obama favorite of outside groups

Sen. Barack Obama, whose campaign has sharply criticized the role of outside political groups in the presidential race, has benefited more than any other candidate from millions of dollars in independent political expenditures, records show.

It seems that Barack Obama rhetoric is finally exposing him to be something less than the demi-god that media pundits have been professing.

The increasing support for Mr. Obama has given him a boost from the same sort of political activity his campaign has railed against, especially when millions of dollars in union and other special-interest money backed his opponents.

The following is the continuation of the first page of the article:

The political arm of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and other independent groups have spent more than $7.1 million directly supporting the Illinois Democrat's bid for the presidential nomination, campaign records show. By contrast, similar outside groups have spent about $5.1 million backing Sen. Hillary Clinton, New York Democrat.

Political specialists point out that Mr. Obama doesn't have any control over those expenditures because outside groups raise and spend money independent of the presidential campaigns.

"It's going to happen, regardless of what the candidates say," said James Thurber, director of the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University.

The Obama campaign, which had been vocal in criticizing such expenditures earlier in the race, says it asked groups not to mount independent political efforts on Mr. Obama's behalf.

Citing money from "big interests," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe wrote in an e-mail to supporters last year, "Outside groups are in the process of pouring more than $3.2 million into Iowa to support Hillary Clinton and John Edwards.

"Barack has repeatedly spoken out against the work of these outside groups, and this campaign does not accept any money from Washington lobbyists or PACs," he wrote.

This is what will begin the total exposure of what has been a less than honest campaign. It's good lie too close to a hungry, sometimes savage media. Obama's campaign has joined the anti-Hillary crusade along with the Media; now, the media is about to gobble them up! Oh, what a shame? Oh, well, you do not have take my word for it. He asked them not to spend money on him, but it's a free country and they have the free speech to spend their money how they want.  This diary is a disingenuous dirty hit piece.

The first amendment gives these groups the right to spread their message.  What's your problem with them exercising that right?

all this outside support... (none / 0)

...didn't prevent obama from whining about "special interests" like AFSCME and Emily's List running ads in iowa. it's amazing, the flexibility in these rules. you just have to remember rule zero in order for it to make sense. rule zero is the rule that any rule that has the effect of impeding obama's winning the nomination isn't really a rule.

You know, I'm an Obama supporter and my take is that you are right that he is taking a different line now, but I don't find it surprising or disqualifying because every candidate does the same thing.  They are all politicians, no?

Obama the big money, wealthy, well-connected candidate? Lies and dirty politics? Wow, he was my hero.

Check the reality (none / 0)

Obama is only moderately wealthy because he wrote two books.  His net worth is around $1.2 million.

The Clintons' net worth is somewhere around $35-$50 million, nearly all made in the last 7 years, from mysterious sources (no tax returns to tell us for sure).

Obama's real "big money" comes from normal folks that give $25-100 a pop every time they get a paycheck.

Obama's "connections" come from people that learn about his campaign and want to volunteer.

Obama's "lies and dirty politics" are nowhere near what the echo chamber around here implies they are.  Obama runs a truthful and thoughtful, yet imperfect, campaign that the Clintons are sometimes successful in drawing out with inflammatory speech or behavior.  Obama's supporters are smart enough to catch the innuendo and smears that are designed to sail over the average voter, but foolish or angry enough to speak their hearts in response.

The kid that gets punished on the playground is not the one that throws the first punch, but the one that throws the second and is seen.

Are we talking about sand box politics? Because I thought I was talking about my hero.

I agree (none / 0)

Obama stated his case to them and that's all he can do.

If you know anything about the Barack Obama campaign outside of what one might learn on Fox News, you would know that Obama hates losing control of their message.  These "helpers" cannot coordinate with the greater campaign and will generally do things differently from the way the campaign wants things to get out.

In a season where any gaffe is jumped on by the press and analyzed over and over, having uncontrollable surrogates-by-affiliation out there mixing it up is a nightmare for a campaign that's trying to be tightly controlled.

He is pretty much a hypocrite. (none / 0)

I remember when he cried and cried and attacked John Edwards over the same thing that he now benefits from.

His group UNITE HERE even ran that racist spanish radio ad in Nevada against Hillary Clinton and he said nothing. John Edwards had the guts and morality to condemn what they were doing and even asked Barack to condemn the ad. But like the political coward that he is Barack remained silent and said nothing to his group about their ad because the racial issues they were creating between Latinos and HC benefited him.
