Stop It!

Cross Posted @ Daily Kos

We are imploding.  The Democratic Party is imploding.  And if we intend to keep it up, we may as well anoint John McCain as the 44th President of the United States.

This election and this political environment could not have lined up any better for us: we swept Republicans out of office in November 2006, McCain and Bush are the two primary backers of this disastrous war that the solid majority of Americans disapprove of, and the Republican brand has arguably never been in worse shape.  Yet despite all of this, we as a Netroots and we as a party are, yet again, about to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory.

In a Reuters/Zogby poll that just came out today, the evidence cannot be any clearer.  In what once were strong leads for both Hillary and Obama over McCain, the Arizona Senator now trounces both of them in general election matchups. Trounces.  McCain beats Obama by eight points after being down seven just a month ago; McCain beats Hillary by seven points.  But the news gets even worse.

In two separate Public Policy polls that also came out today that did surveys in the two key states of Ohio and Florida, there are deep, deep demographic rifts among Democrats as well.  They find that Obama is polling under 60% among white Democrats in both states and Hillary isn't even pulling in 55% of African Americans.  Let me remind you that Democrats and African Americans are supposed to vote, well, Democrat!

This primary still has at least two to three more months left of it.  McCain is going to continue to fly below the radar (in addition to flying for photo-ops), raise cash, and otherwise stay out of the spotlight hoping that Obama and Hillary continue to duke it out and bloody each other.  So far, they've obliged.  So far we've obliged.  But right here and right now I ask every to please, for the sake of the party and for the sake of this country, stop.

There has been much talk about boycotts here at this site and over at MyDD.  I honestly don't care and never considered taking part - I enjoy both sides and the perspectives they bring to the table.  Who cares if one side is more pro-Hillary or pro-Obama than the other?  I certainly don't.  But back to the point - I propose a boycott of a different kind.  I ask anyone and everyone willing to do so to join me in, for the rest of the primary season, refusing to recommend any hit diary regardless of whether the subject is Obama or Hillary.  As of right now, I count a combined four hit diaries on the recommended lists between the two sites, which is actually a pretty low number compared to most days around here.  It has to stop or we face an even further erosion of demographic and overall polling numbers against McCain.  At this rate, both candidates will be unelectable.

I truly doubt that the two campaigns will follow suit - though they should - but we can at least try to set an example and show them how a real progressive community ought to act.

Update: Those supportive of the boycott to refuse to recommend hit diaries from here on out:

Re: Tips/Comments (none / 0)

LOL.  You're right.  The FRONT-RUNNER with the pledged delegate lead, overall delegate lead, popular vote lead, the the most states won, and the majority of the youth vote (i.e. the future of the party) MUST withdraw from the race, disavow the 50 state strategy, embrace the DLC, and fall in line behind HRC.

Yeah.  That makes perfect sense.

How, exactly, would an Obama withdrawl be "good for the party"?  How would it be any better than a HRC concession?

Amazing.  So well reasoned.  I'm switching my vote!

Your candidate should be thankful that the bulk of her supporters are far more lucid than you are.

What's a hit diary? (none / 0)

Is it "Hillary is a bad bad person who should be banned to the utter ends of the earth?"

Is it posting a diary about how I disagree with candidate X on some issue?

by Southern Mouth on Wed Mar 19, 2008 at 01:57:40 PM EST

So only Obama has hit diaries? (2.00 / 1)

You won't quote the vile Hillary Hate titles that occupy DKos recommended list day after day after day afater day?

Is this another Hillary Hit Diary?

OMG.  Are you nuts or what?  How is this even remotely a anti-hillary diary?

You come here from DKos and... (2.00 / 1)

ask everyone to start singing Kumbaya...and then you define, for another commenter, hit diaries...but only suggest diaries that deal with Obama.

Hence, my quesiton and conclusion...and you still haven't answered my question...only attacked the questioner.  A classic DKos slim job.

Re: You come here from DKos and... (none / 0)

OK.  Answer is clear.  You are nuts.

First:  I didn't define hit diaries here or anywhere else.

Secondly:  The diarist is HERE at MyDD, and referring to the smear diaries that frequently adorn the right side of the front page HERE.  Who is most often the target of these?  Obama.

Thirdly:  regarding your "question and conclusion", which was wether or not this particular diary was a hit diary.  Obviously it is not, in fact it's quite the opposite.  There's just no other way to see it.

UNLESS, which brings us full circle to MY conclusion:

You must be nuts.

I don't know where you're getting the idea that this is an anti-Hillary diary.  It isn't in the least bit.

Re: What's a hit diary? (2.00 / 1)

A 'hit diary,' in my opinion, is one that is completely one-sided and intentionally ignores facts with the intention of bringing down one candidate or his/her supporters.

So a diary about Hillary cries (2.00 / 1)

.... but they are crocodile tears or "The Clintons will do anything to win" - those are hit diaries?

Going to be mighty quiet around here and DKOS if those and the Obama ones you described are gone.

It would mean we could MAYBE get back to talking issues?????!!!!! WOW.  What a novel concept!?

Do I need to sign up somewhere?

I posted one diary that said something along the lines of "Can we all just get along?"

I hope it wouldn't be a "hit diary" to describe my feelings about a statement Candidate X or Y made, that I disagreed with.

You're right (2.00 / 5)

we are imploding, and I take responsibility for my part in it.

I have principles and I will not be abuse or thrown under the bus because I am gay or because I support Hillary.

I've had enough, and I don't care how many hit diaries aren't recommended.  The damage is done to this voter.

Re: You're right (1.00 / 6)

Ditto for me. BO's speech yesterday just made me even more angry. I could NEVER support him. Never. This voter is also done. And Howard Dean and Donna Brazille and Nancy Pelosi will shoulder much of the blame, along with Daschle, Kennedy, Durbin, Kerry, and Bradley. They are the ones who have propped this guy up to get "anyone but Hillary" and did a LOUSY job on their homework on this "Manchurian Candidate."

Re: You're right (2.00 / 1)

The Manchurian part was over the line, but the rest of what you say rings true, especially about the "leadership" guys did really lousy homework.  as a result of their lousy homework, we're pretty much doomed now come the GE where, as Leon Panetta said, the Dems will "snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory".  So I understand your being upset.

Re: STOP IT! (2.00 / 5)

How does a party who obviously has the best candidates manage to self-destruct like this?  I think we're at the point where either candidate may already be unelectable, not just b/c of the crossover voters abandoning us, but b/c our own Dems have drawn their lines in the sand.  It's very sad, but not at all surprising.

Excellent diary.  As I said on Daily Kos, both Obama and Clinton are good and decent people.  I would vote for either in the general election.

by TomP on Wed Mar 19, 2008 at 02:10:39 PM EST

You should be telling... (1.00 / 1)

Nancy Pelosi and Dick Durbin to stop it. They're reaching millions more people with their propaganda and they're being just as divisive IMO. If we are screaming louder it's only because we don't have as big a bullhorn.

Re: STOP IT! (2.00 / 1)

Look guys, we simply don't have a choice.  Knowing how much farther our country, our world will sink into the morass of poverty, war, environmental degradation, loss of civil rights (etc. etc. etc.) with McCain as president, it is morally imperative to vote for a Democrat this year. It is not defensible to say that you're sitting out if your candidate doesn't get the nomination; in fact Hillary's and Obama's positions are similar or the same on most issues, and either of them would make an excellent leader. I implore all of you to set aside your bitterness and acrimony, and for God's sake stop acting as if the either one of the Democratic candidates is evil incarnate. WE NEED TO VOTE FOR THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE THIS YEAR, EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US.
