WSJ: Obama and the Minister

Finally some much-needed scruity over the close relationship between Obama and his 20-year spiritual mentor Pastor Wright. I hope this is just the beginning. I love the way Obama supporters downplaying the role of Pastor Wright. Make no mistake, Pastor Wright is a racist full of hatred. Voters need some clear answers of how deeply Pastor Wright influenced Obama's ideology over the 20-year span.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB12054527 7093135111.html?mod=opinion_main_comment aries

His voice rising, Mr. Wright said, "We supported Zionism shamelessly while ignoring the Palestinians and branding anybody who spoke out against it as being anti-Semitic. . . . We care nothing about human life if the end justifies the means. . . ."

Concluding, Mr. Wright said: "We started the AIDS virus . . . We are only able to maintain our level of living by making sure that Third World people live in grinding poverty. . . ."

Considering this view of America, it's not surprising that in December Mr. Wright's church gave an award to Louis Farrakhan for lifetime achievement. In the church magazine, Trumpet, Mr. Wright spoke glowingly of the Nation of Islam leader.

Mr. Obama went on to explain Mr. Wright's anti-Zionist statements as being rooted in his anger over the Jewish state's support for South Africa under its previous policy of apartheid. As with his previous claim that his church gave the award to Mr. Farrakhan because of his work with ex-offenders, Mr. Obama appears to have made that up.

Neither the presentation of the award nor the Trumpet article about the award mentions ex-offenders, and Mr. Wright's statements denouncing Israel have not been qualified in any way.

As for Mr. Wright's repeated comments blaming America for the 9/11 attacks because of what Mr. Wright calls its racist and violent policies, Mr. Obama has said it sounds as if the minister was trying to be "provocative."

Hearing Mr. Wright's venomous and paranoid denunciations of this country, the vast majority of Americans would walk out. Instead, Mr. Obama and his wife Michelle have presumably sat through numerous similar sermons by Mr. Wright.

Indeed, Mr. Obama has described Mr. Wright as his "sounding board" during the two decades he has known him. Mr. Obama has said he found religion through the minister in the 1980s. He joined the church in 1991 and walked down the aisle in a formal commitment of faith.

The title of Mr. Obama's bestseller "The Audacity of Hope" comes from one of Wright's sermons. Mr. Wright is one of the first people Mr. Obama thanked after his election to the Senate in 2004. Mr. Obama consulted Mr. Wright before deciding to run for president. He prayed privately with Mr. Wright before announcing his candidacy last year.

Mr. Obama obviously would not choose to belong to Mr. Wright's church and seek his advice unless he agreed with at least some of his views. In light of Mr. Wright's perspective, Michelle Obama's comment that she feels proud of America for the first time in her adult life makes perfect sense.

The media have largely ignored Mr. Obama's close association with Mr. Wright. This raises legitimate questions about Mr. Obama's fundamental beliefs about his country. Those questions deserve a clearer answer than Mr. Obama has provided so far.

Prison Break Is No Progressive (none / 0)

Yesterday this jerk wrote a diary insinuating that Obama would launch a genocide against non-African Americans if he were President. Jerome and Todd really need to get their act together and start banning these kinda people.

I think this should have come out before Iowa (none / 0)

and people would have had time to examine if this guy was electable. But it seems the media is covering for him the way they didn't with Geraldine Ferraro. This story proves Barack will pander to the far fringes of society and the party just to "be black enough" for his own. i'd like to think he doesn't really believe Pastor Wright.

LOL he's black enough for me! And his minister is way TOO black! Everyone I know says the same thing - he is unelectable garbage and he has bamboozled almost half the nation now. Everyone I know says the same thing about him and that they will vote for McCain instead of him even though our young men and women are fighting a war overseas. I say its the only way to save this nation from disaster!

Re: WSJ: Obama and the Minister (2.00 / 1)

As a business owner & officer of the Chambers of Commerce in two states, half of the people I network with are successful Jewish business owners. Most of them are solid Democrats. Many give lots of money to local & state Dem politics.

One thing I will tell you is right now, MAJORITY of these Jewish Democrats have already decided that they will vote for McCain if Obama is the nominee.

There main issue with Obama is his competence to handle the Presidency. Especially during these Very challenging Economic, Political, International times.

And when they read issues about his association with the likes of Mr. Wright, it only aggravates the situation.

I will say it here just like some have already said.

In November, many base democrats will BE in SHOCK when Obama does poorly in traditinal Blue states like NJ,PA,MA,CA,CT,RI,MI.

There are just so many Critical Dem blocks who have NO Intention of supporting him in the large numbers needed in a GE race.

White working class Reagan dems. White Seniors, Latinos, Asians, & Jewish voters, & white working class women.

The combined number of these groups make up more LITERALLY HALF of ALL Democratic base voters.

These are pretty Hillary Clinton's base of support.

Any Democratic who underperforms with any or a combination of these groups will be lose by a substantial margin.

With weak support from these core groups, No number independent Dem leaning votes can make up for it in the general.

Obama is pretty much relying of White Liberals & Black voters. Ask Dukakis, Mondale, & McGovern how that turned out for them in the GE?

crazy... (none / 0)

Base Democrats are going to be lined up around the block to vote for Obama. It's been the case up to now and it will continue to be the case.

Re: crazy... (2.00 / 1)

Nope, that's a lie. With the exception of African Americans, traditional Democratic voting groups are going to Hillary. Obama is getting African Americans and the Nader voters. Hillary's getting unions, lower income families, blue collar workers and women. The problem Obama has got is that he probably can't hold that coalition and he needs it to win the big blue states.

I can't wait to see 24 hour a day Jeremiah Wright tv that we'll have if Obama's the nominee. Talk about being turned into a pariah - wheeeee doggies. It's gonna be bad.

But anyway, go ahead - prove your point. Link the current survey finding Obama scoring highest among women and blue collar workers.

Re: crazy... (none / 0)

You are so right. He has been hidden from the people for far too long. He hasn't visited any states or made himself visible, he's been hiding in the shadows. When the general election comes, this nation is going to wake up finally. I bet they wish they could take back all the votes! When November comes it will be just like it was in Michigan - they won't even see his name on the ballot!

Re: WSJ: Obama and the Minister (2.00 / 1)

Same with Asian Americans, many are in the decision of not voting for Obama in general election if he's the nominee. FL is pretty much gone for him in GE since Jews and Hispanic voters are abandoning him in drove. If the more liberal hispanic voters decide to jump on McCain bandwagon, you'll see a very very competitive race in CA in general election.

Re: WSJ: Obama and the Minister (none / 0)

I seriously think that he must have tampered with the voting to get so many votes so far. The asians and jews have been running from him for months and if they're not they will be very soon. You are completely right. Keep believing!

Re: WSJ: Obama and the Minister (2.00 / 1)

God, I am so sick of these wingnuts questioning everyone's patriotism.  I have to admit, though, we kinda hung a curveball over the plate for them on this one.

Obama's ability to deal with this stuff will tell us a lot about his readiness for November.  This issue is not Hillary's turf, this is right-wing red meat all the way through.

Re: WSJ: Obama and the Minister (none / 0)

I saw the video yesterday on ABC in GMA program. I was shocked. I even think Barack Obama and Michelle Obama has been brain washed by hearing these hatred speeches from this pastor for 20 years. Him not wearing a US Flag Pin http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Story?id= 3690000 and Michelle's comment that she is not proud of America until now http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/el ection2008/2008-02-19-michelle-obama_N.h tm are strong evidence that the damage has been done permanently in their brains. What a shame?
