It's the Electoral College, Stupid

Democrats need to stop the electability fairy tales and focus on the only electability question that matters: the Electoral College votes.

Here's the breakdown for all of the primaries to date.

Total votes:
CLINTON: 8,886,712
OBAMA: 7,132,964

Percentage:
CLINTON: 55.5%
OBAMA: 45.4%

Electoral votes from states won (270 needed):
CLINTON: 201
OBAMA: 125

NOTES: Does not include raw votes from IA, NV, AK. Counts all Michigan "uncommitted" votes as Obama votes.

The situation comes into greater clarity when you back out the rock solid Republican states that would never cast their electoral college votes for a Democrat:

Electoral votes from states won (270 needed):
CLINTON: 198
OBAMA: 68

NOTES:

The Republican states and electoral college votes irrelevant to Democratic Presidential chances are:

Georgia    15
Alabama    9
South Carolina    8
Oklahoma    7
Kansas    6
Utah    5
Idaho    4
North Dakota    3
Alaska    3

The relevant Clinton states and electoral college votes are:

California    55
New York    31
Florida    27
Michigan    17
New Jersey    15
Massachusetts    12
Tennessee    11
Arizona    10
Arkansas    6

New Hampshire    4

The relevant Obama states and electoral college votes are:

Illinois    21
Missouri    11
Minnesota    10

Re: It's the Electoral College, Stupid (none / 0)

You put this out there like it matters and it does not.

Do you really believe that Obama would lose California? If you say you do than you are lying.

Do you really believe Obama would lose NY? That is slightly more believable but it is still not going to happen.

And the fact that more democrats than repubs are coming out across the board means that some states that have not been on our board in years might be,at the very least, talked about if Obama is the nominee and that would be a good thing even if he ultimately lost those states.

Actually with McCain/Schwarzenegger combo, yeah, I do think Obama could lose CA.

Re: It's the Electoral College, Stupid (none / 0)

Yeah, and we would likely lose House seats with Clinton.

Re: It's the Electoral College, Stupid (none / 0)

I am concerned about states like Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.

The Democrats have to win at least three of those four to win. Four out of four gives a solid mandate.

Obama got clobbered in Florida, finishing behind Clinton, McCain, and Romney in that order.

Other than his home state, he has not shown strength in any of the large industrial states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, or Ohio.

FL: Hil beat GOP, GOP beat Obama (none / 0)

And in Florida, Hillary beat everyone (and GOP beat Obama):

Hillary: 856,944
McCain: 693,425
Romney: 598,152
Obama: 568,930

Re: It's the Electoral College, Stupid (none / 0)

McCain and the other republicans actively campaigned in Florida, so the fact that they got more votes than Obama is not a fair representation of what would happen in the General.

Obama took his name of the ballot in Michigan so there is no way of knowing how we would do there.

PA and OH haven't happened yet.

Therefore you are accusing Obama of lacking strength in areas without any actual proof of how strong he is in those areas.

Do you really believe that Obama would lose California?

Hell, if Kennedy and Kerry keep campaiging for the Democrats, we might even lose Massachusetts!

Re: It's the Electoral College, Stupid (none / 0)

Obama could lose Pennsylvania and Florida to McCain.  Hillary wins PA, and has a much better chance of winning Florida.  Hillary adds Arkansas unless Huckabee is on the ticket.  What does Obama add (and don't tell me Georgia or South Carolina- that is a fantasy and tells me you're thinking with your heart, not your head)?

So far, Obama's campaign has been brilliant, counting on the overweighted rural votes and the small states.  But can we really go with the candidate that lost, or will lose, the primaries in California, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Florida, Ohio, and Texas?

Re: It's the Electoral College, Stupid (none / 0)

Clinton beat Huckabee in Arkansas yesterday.

She came within a couple thousand votes of beating McCain in his home state of Arizona! This despite the Democratic governor of the state, Janet Napolitano, campaigning against her.

Obama could help us pick up many House seats with his new voters.

Re: It's the Electoral College, Stupid (2.00 / 1)

Where? In South Carolina and Georgia? I don't think so.

In college town districts?

If you want to talk new voters, I suggest you look at the increases in female turnout this year...not just in raw numbers but in percentage of the electorate. Female voters are gold for Democratics downticket, in every state, in every district.

Or, maybe you want to look at the Latino/a vote. In California, it increased from 16% in 2004 Democratic Primary to 29% in yesterday's primary. Clinton is generating unprecedented enthusiasm among Latino/a voters. The implications of this on downticket races across much of the country are significant.

Re: It's the Electoral College, Stupid (none / 0)

Strategically speaking, it's the purple states that matter.  The true-blue states will vote D no matter what.  The red states won't vote D even if we put up Jesus Christ himself.  (Notorious librul, that guy. ;-)

However, it would be a kick in the teeth to our most loyal voters to ignore blue states.  In the long run, that's probably not smart.

I guess that's what super delegates are for.  Blue states have more.

Re: It's the Electoral College, Stupid (none / 0)

I don't think the issue is how they do in either confirmed red or blue states, but rather:

1: how do they do in swing states? Florida went to Hilary, and she's favored in PA and OH -- any others?

2: do they bring any red states into play? That's not so much a matter of who won the primary as who is doing best in polling that matches them vs mcCain. Here's where Hillary has an advantage I think -- if Repub women in the south like her, she make take a few of those states and make them competitive.

3: do they take any blue states and put them into play for McCain? Here's where Obama has an advantage, as it's more likely that Hilllary might put a blue state like CT into play for McCain (but, again, would have to see polling -- just a guess).

Re: It's the Electoral College, Stupid (none / 0)

Michigan (close in 2004)
Florida (obvious swing state)
Arkansas
New Hampshire
Tennessee (red, but not unthinkably red)
Arizona (red, but not unthinkably red)
New Jersey

And, I do not think we can poo-pooh California, Jersey, and Pennsylvania with a moderate Republican like McCain. Remember, California has a Republican governor. These states are natural territory for an "independent" Republican candidate with unquestioned commander-in-chief gravitas.

BTW, for anyone who wants to better vizualize the electoral collge, the interactive map at this site is great:

www.270-to-win.com

You can start with the 2004 actuals and just start clicking states. You can also call up a map of every electoral college election as far back as you want to go. It's a good reality check for those who say that a candidate might put Alabama or Wyoming on the map!
