NBC News Calls Georgia for Barack Obama

Please Support MyDD by Contributing to the Site Fundraiser Today

An early call to begin the evening. The numbers across my desk showed Obama up in Georgia by almost a 3-to-1 margin, and NBC News is projecting that Barack Obama that has won the state.

Update [2008-2-5 19:1:31 by Jonathan Singer]: Per MSNBC, no call on the Republican side where there's a tight three-way race.

Update [2008-2-5 19:7:28 by Jonathan Singer]: Obama wins Black voters in the state 86 percent to 13 percent, while Clinton won White voters in the state 54 percent to 43 percent. It looks like that's a very good showing for Obama among both groups. Remains to be seen if this is a bellweather or an aberration...

Update [2008-2-5 19:12:4 by Jonathan Singer]: One more point. If Hillary Clinton can only pull in 13 percent among Black voters nationwide, it could spell trouble for her because she needs to break the 15 percent threshold in Black majority districts to ensure that Obama doesn't get extra districts. Again, this could be limited to Georgia, and we don't want to read too much into these numbers at this point. But if this is a trend...

Re: NBC News Calls Georgia for Barack Obama (none / 0)

Here is a question that I have been asking since Iowa - isn't it a little surprising that pundits are  surprised when Obama gets a significant number of white votes in a DEMOCRATIC primary?  Haven't the Dems been the integrated party all these years, while the Reps have been running on their racist southern strategy?  I would be very disappointed in my party if white people did not vote for Obama if they were so inclined based on his policies.

I agree that in the general election I will be impressed if he gets 39% of the white vote in Georgia - but in the Dem primary?  I would hope so.  The pundits never mention this at all, like the last 28 years of the Republican southern strategy never happened.

Any thoughts?  This is a great forum and I'm really interested in your opinions.

by ocli on Tue Feb 05, 2008 at 07:23:46 PM EST

Re: NBC News Calls Georgia for Barack Obama (none / 0)

The South is still the South. We were still winning in the south because of many racist white people as recently as 1964. Regan had a governing majority because of the conservative, white, southern Democrats.

Remember, Zell Miller was still a Democrat until 2004. It's really only now that the Democratic party has become an ideologically cohesive party.

I don't want to step on any toes, but I don't think it's a coincidence that Obama has no problem winning white voters everywhere (Iowa, New Hampshire, etc) but the south.

Good point about the Southern Democrats.  Did they stay registered Democrats, or register as Republicans when Reagan got them?  I know a big part of the general elections strategy is to try to get them back.
