Hillary Clinton cries in Connecticut

by Jason George

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sen. Hillary Clinton teared up this morning at an event at the Yale Child Study Center, where she worked while in law school in the early 1970s.

A doctor, who was introducing Clinton, began to choke up, leading Clinton's eyes to fill with tears, which she wiped out of her left eye. At the time, the doctor was saying how proud he was that sheepskin-coat, bell-bottom-wearing young woman he met in 1972 was now running for president.

"Well, I said I would not tear up; already we're not exactly on the path," Clinton said with emotion after the introduction.

Clinton is holding a roundtable discussion with Connecticut women to talk about childcare and healthcare.

When Clinton got misty-eyed at an event in New Hampshire on Jan. 7, politicos and pundits filled hours discussing if it helped her, and Clinton eventually pointed to the moment as when she "found her voice" and turned the corner in the Granite State.

At the time, there was much debate if the candidate's emotional response to a question -- "How do you do it?"" -- was genuine or calculated.

I know this may sounds harsh but cry again b4 another close election? Is there a pattern there?

no, the only pattern here is that some Obama supporters are ignorant young men.

Extremely ignorant young men. In fact bad manners seem to be a distinguishing characteristic of the Obama crowd starting at the top.

What an a-hole (none / 0)

Would it be harsh if I question if Obama is reeeally a Christian?  I mean he seems to touting that fact a lot lately, and it is a close election and all.  Did a man born to an atheist mother and Mulsim father come to Jesus to earn some votes?

That would be pretty harsh of me to say.  So I don't.

you think she teared up because (2.00 / 1)

she is feeling the heat?
Maybe the fact that someone she has known for 40 years teared up at her historic candidacy gave her sympathy tears.

That may be true too. But, why b4 another close election.

Rasmussen:It's now Clinton 46%, Obama 40%. (see recent daily numbers). For the first time all year, Rasmussen Markets data shows that Clinton and Obama have roughly equal chances of winning the Democratic Presidential Nomination (current prices: Clinton 50.0%; Obama 46.5%

Not sure what he's talking about. In the days before the NH primary, Obama was up in those markets by a margin of like 2-1.

give me a break (2.00 / 2)

This is not a diary. The candidates must all be stressed out and exhausted, and it is moving when someone you've known for decades says nice things about you.

From what I read (none / 0)

she had a connection with this place.

Clinton (Bill) used to do this stuff all the time and it wouldn't generate the press this does.

I say she deserves a break on this one.

Lets Really Not go There (2.00 / 1)

There are much more important things to talk about today.  I'm not slamming your diary, but I don't think focusing on this kind of thing is (1) fair to Senator Clinton; or (2) a wise strategic move by Obama.

As to the first point, there's absolutely nothing wrong with becoming a bit emotional when a former mentor praises you like that.

I am tired of all the "cards" that HRC (none / 0)

has been playing in this election.

Race card...check

Black and brown divide card...check

Woman sympathy card...check

Enough.  HRC needs to get a backbone and win this election because of her merits, vision, ideas and proposals NOT because of all these "cards" she has been playing.

As a woman I am a little disappointed.

I agree. Why shouldn't i question this? The Clintons don't do anything without calculation.

So much for the politics of "hope" and "unity".  If the media gave Obama just one week of the hostile coverage that Clinton gets, he would wilt in 2 seconds flat.

Its not hate (1.33 / 3)

its anger. and I hope this makes other people angry too. i have nothing against tears. it would be different if this woman cried once before, like in Iowa or when her husband did what he did but she doesn't cry --except when the polls show that she is about to lose. it makes me furious. its manipulative.

Come on... (2.00 / 1)

this person knew her from years ago. They said nice things, emotional things about her, it got to her a bit.

I probably would have done the same. Are candidates not allowed to show emotion or are they only allowed to show anger as an emotion?

She was happy and filled with happy emotion. Has this ever happened to any of you? If not, then you are not human.

A lot of good actors have trouble crying on que.  I doubt whether a career of 35 years could do it.

This is another unfair double standard used to attack Clinton.  She can't be human.  If she is she is attacked for it.

Re: Lets be real (none / 0)

Have you read this:

http://www.newsweek.com/id/107578/page/2

This is the problem with Hillary Clinton. She is highly intelligent, has real experience and is an attractive candidate. But she is terrified to act on her beliefs. In fact, she seems so conditioned by what she sees as political constraints that one can barely tell where her beliefs begin and where those constraints end.

If she was authentic she would be unbeatable but that is not the politician she has chosen to be.

She votes against baning land mines.

She votes for an ungodly war.

The Hillary Clinton i know does not believe in land mines and thinks they should be banned. The Hillary Clinton i know is against war--especially ill conceived wars built on lies.

Every decision in her political life is determined by the pollsters. She is inauthentic. She does not listen to her gut. She listens to her pollsters.....

Hillary's Amazing (none / 0)

I want to see her win more than anything! She's extremely tough. The media's been attacking her for months and getting her ready for the general--she's in great shape to take it all. I suspect, if she does strongly tomorrow, she'll get the momentum to go the rest of the way.

Good luck to Obama supporters too, I know what it is to really believe in one person and the inspiration they spark to want to champion for them.

Hillary does this for many of us, too.

Re: Dude, chill. (none / 0)

I am not so sure that I would vote for Obama after seeing how he was GLADLY attacking Hillary using Rovian talking points and how he wonderfully killed democratic principles again using Republican tactics. If Obama was not sure that his supporters would vote for Hillary, Obama should be surely worried about whether he could carry Hillary supporters.

Hillary Cries again and I am scared!!! (none / 0)

Notice that Hillary has never cried over that criminal Iraq war vote.

She has never shed a tear over the 4000 dead Americans and countless Iraqis who lost their lives because she refused to be a leader against this war and instead, decided to do the politically expedient thing.

She has never shed a tear over that. She only cries when she thinks it'll get her votes.

She's a phony!

Careful asking questions you don't want to hear the answer to:

Yes, I cried the day the war broke out. And if you ever watch the "In Memoriam" at the end of ABC News on Sunday, they always run photos of soldiers who have died in Iraq. I've had to quit watching that because it makes me weep like a baby.

No tears ... (2.00 / 1)

Via 'First Read' over at MSNBC:

"Penn Rhodeen, Clinton's supervisor during her time at the center, introduced the senator, hailing her work on behalf of children. He seemed to get a little choked up as he spoke, saying she had always been and would always be a champion for children. After he spoke, Clinton joked that she had said she wouldn't tear up, but that already it wasn't looking good. Her eyes had misted up a bit, but there were no actual tears."
