Sigh, No Bloomberg '08

This news makes me feel almost as bad as the realization that we wouldn't be seeing a Hunter/Tancredo '08 ticket for the Republicans.

It looks like the multitude of Americans (all of nearly 12,000, in fact, or almost 4/100ths of one percent of the population, including this guy) who believe now is the time to have a billionaire technocrat are going to have to wait four or more additional years to have their dreams become a reality. Too bad, though; there is at least some evidence that Bloomberg could draw more support from Republicans than from Democrats (which isn't terribly surprising given his propensity in recent years to be a hack for the Republican Party at times), thus providing the Democrats with a net positive.

It sure would be nice to get at least 50% of the popular vote. Of course, it is best to be sworn in, but you know what I mean.

yeah, i never understood why bill couldn't do it in 96 (not trying to be snarky or mean, just musing). 92 makes sense with perot at 19%, but really, 49%? i guess that's what low turnout does.

Still love Colbert's comment about the guy though. Something akin to:

"First he was a Democrat who believed in abortion rights and gun control; then he was a Republican who believed in abortion rights and gun control; now he's an independent who believes in abortion rights and gun control. When is this guy going to make up his mind?"

Forget about useless polls taken in July 2007 when NOBODY in their right mind is thinking about the Presidential election (well, I was and possibly you were, but normal people were not)!

Bloomberg could only hurt Obama. He was FOR gun-control, and abortion rights. That's all you need to know to be sure that Iowa Republicans would NOT be voting for him.

Bloomberg's only audience would be Democratic leaning Independents who want "bi-partisanship." Republicans don't actually want bi-partisanship, they just want to win. They think Democrats should surrender gracefully, which is why they like ass-kissers like Lieberman.

But, they'd never in hell vote for Bloomberg over McCain.

So, this is a net plus for Democrats. Obama with his message of inclusion, just sucked all the oxygen out a possible Bloomberg run.

Another reason to be glad that Hillary isn't the nominee! Bloomberg was gearing up to be the "sensible alternative" to Hillary, to make sure McCain won.

That would have been a total disaster, making a Democratic defeat absolutely certain. McCain would win Republicans and Republican leaning independents, while Bloomberg took Democratic leaning independents, and Hillary was stuck at about 38% with the Democratic base, and virtually no independent support.

It would be a land-slide for McCain.

But, Obama just totally pre-empts Bloomberg's message, which is why he's staying out.

Net result: Increase in probable Democratic turnout in November, and maybe the election.

Don't underestimate this! This is A HUGE VICTORY!

Unity 08 always seems to be totally out of touch with political reality, kept alive by equally out of touch pundits like Broder and retired politicians like Sam Nunn.

I don't really blame Bloomberg for flirting with running though. It got him almost as much national attention as if he was actually running.

And it took the Mayor's seat out of the GOP's hands for the first time since 1994, so it was good for something.

MSNBC had some chatter about Bloomberg being Obama's VP candidate. Talk about a VP choice who wuld actually push rank & file Dems to sit out the election. For what, do get Broder's endorsement. COunt me out.
