Not This Time

As we've learned time and again, the librul media is terribly fond of doing the right-wing message machine's dirty work when it comes to defining our candidates for president. Al Gore was the serial exaggerator and John Kerry was the flip-flopper, so when the right-wing smears against Barack Obama began to paint him as unpatriotic, The AP's Nedra Pickler was happy to oblige by running an article whose third paragraph literally begins "conservative consultants say..." and goes on to quote disgraced right-wing smear merchant Roger Stone as an expert. CNN followed suit with this very helpful poll although its accompanying article at least provided Obama's response to the charges. As Glenn Greenwald notes, we shouldn't be terribly shocked that this is happening, "That's just how the right-wing/media nexus works" but it doesn't mean we have to accept it. What the right-wing message machine and its enablers in the media didn't count on this time was that now there's a left-wing message machine, the rock to their scissors.

Cue Jane Hamsher:

The AP probably doesn't care a whole lot about what you think, but it does care what the papers who subscribe to their wire service think. So we've set up a page where you can plug in your zip code and automatically send an email to the papers in your area who syndicate the AP and let them know this is beneath what you expect their coverage to be -- for this election cycle and beyond.

Especially if you live in some state that's less likely to get a lot of attention like New York or California, please take time to send an email. We want to blanket the country as broadly as possible and let every paper know that this kind of journalism is unacceptable -- and that you're watching.

You can access the letter-writing tool HERE.

Christy updates as to the remarkable success of the action so far:

...you have sent over 11,800 letters to newspapers all across the country, including well over 1,000 letters each to the NYTimes, the WaPo, USAToday, the LATimes and the WSJ -- and even more letters to local newspapers in every single state.  All in the last two days.  You guys rock!

It's also starting to get some coverage, check out this write up over at Congressional Quarterly.

So, no matter whom you support in the primary, I urge everyone to send a letter today. The media needs to know we won't put up with their typical takedown of our nominee no matter who it is; not this time.

Oh and if your letter is published, hekebelos tells you what to do:

We'd love to see your work, so here's what we'd like you do to:

If your letter from this campaign got published in an online edition of a newspaper, we'd love to see it!  We'll be re-publishing a selection of letters here for everyone to see the results of effective netroots and grassroots action.

send an email with the subject line: "show your patriotism LTE" to:

firedoglakeaction @ gmail . com

Include the link to your letter, and let us know which one it is if the link contains multiple letters.

Re: Right Wing Smears Against BOTH candidates (none / 0)

Kudos for also calling for action against the right wing smears of another one of our progressive candidates.... HILLARY CLINTON.

Oh wait.... guess somebody forgot all about that....

"As we've learned time and again, the librul media is terribly fond of doing the right-wing message machine's dirty work when it comes to defining our candidates for president....so when the right-wing smears against Barack Obama began..."

Re: Right Wing Smears Against BOTH candidates (none / 0)

It does not apply... yet!  The right wing has been LAUDING Hillary lately...  talking her up in a big way... They want a contested convention in November...

That would change if she manages to somehow pull the nomination, and we should certainly do the same thing when she gets smeared as well...

Just right now, she's not getting any negative attention from the right wingers... If anything they are being positive... for the moment...

Re: Not This Time (none / 0)

I am loving the internets!  Rapid response. Some of these neanderthals have no clue what will happen as they continue to spew this stuff.  Obama has over a million supporters who are ready to pounce on this garbage without even being asked to.

We are looking at a citizens' rapid response team.  It's about time.

Angry email on the way.

Re: Not This Time (2.00 / 0)

Now why would we want to do that ? Who stood up for Hillary?

Re: Not This Time (none / 0)

You're right.  We should throw a fit and allow the Republicans to win the presidency.  Because it's not about the country, it's about payback.

Re: Not This Time (2.00 / 2)

If Hillary had created an organized and sophisticated network of online/grassroots defenders, then she'd be in a better place.

Unfortunately - Obama has out organized her on a variety of fronts. And this despite that fact that he's a Muslim*!

Re: Not This Time (none / 0)

I don't understand how a blog which asks us to help stop rightwing smears is the same blog which has the very same smears shooting up the rec list on a daily basis.   I guess this is a step back in the right direction?

See below (none / 0)

I've done so.

I earnestly and fervently hope Barack Obama wins the nomination.  I've had plenty of problems with both the Clinton campaign and any number of Clinton supporters.

On at least 4 occasions, I've written various media outlets decrying the treatment of Senator Clinton when it was appropriate.

I guess you did and now you are sitting.  Are you going to stand up again?

Nice! (none / 0)

I'm wondering, though:

How many MYDD diarists sent letters to the editor calling Obama a Muslim?

Re: Not This Time (none / 0)

Thanks for this but I think iberals really need to focus on creating a voice for ourselves on a national cable channel, maybe like a talk show channel or something because the only liberal voice on cable news is Olbermann and the right wing knows this.

I was watching CNN  today and before I changed the channel they pulled out the race card against Obama with the Farrakhan story and then Lou Dobbs followed them with the same smear.

CNN is CLEARLY on McCain's team and Cafferty was the only one with the guts to go after McCain.... I think he gets exactly what his network is doing and he probably won't last long.

Re: Not This Time (none / 0)

Well, sure.... you got a couple billion dollars to invest in such a venture?

That's the problem...  anyone who has the kind of money needed is a Republican!

Re: Not This Time (2.00 / 0)

When Hillary was being trashed and trampled by the media there was no mobilization like this.

Where was your outrage then?

by foxx on Wed Feb 27, 2008 at 10:24:36 PM EST

Re: Not This Time (none / 0)

Obama out organized Hillary. Obama worked the internet and the grassroots. Hillary just took her institutional support and thought that would be enough. It wasn't. Some of Obama's support was organic and some was encouraged by the campaign.

Don't whine about it. Organize for her!

Re: Not This Time (2.00 / 0)

You didn't answer the question.

This is framed as "no matter who you support" we have to call the media to account. But in fact it is a mobilization for Obama.

For the record (2.00 / 1)

Although I am STRONGLY supporting Obama....

I have sent e-mails - without tools - but via my own volition:

- to the idiot Boston radio station (station manager, sales manager, and every one else I could find) whose morning DJs made the "Iron my shirt" comment in New Hampshire.

- MSNBC calling for David Schuster to be disciplined, if not FIRED, for his Chelsea comments

- various news organizations when John McCain answered the "how do we beat the X" comment with his less than 'straight talk' self --- and none, NONE of them called him on it to the extent he deserved.

- Chris Matthews on multiple occasions - though that's easy because I've had a "You suck, Chris" form letter ever since his comparison of a statement from Osama Bin Laden to a statement from Michael Moore.

Re: Not This Time (none / 0)

You're ignoring the fact that this tool makes it incredibly easy to send a targeted email.  I don't know what this says about political activism, but outrage will only flow when it is wedded to convenience.
