Hillary Supporters: Time to Take a Breath

First thing I want to do is to congratulate Barack Obama and his supporters for their wins this past weekend and tonight.  It has been a hard fought few months, and you are reaping the rewards.  With that being said, this is not a diary for you.  This is for the Hillary supporters out there.  I'm not going to go so far as to say you cannot comment here, but I would appreciate if you keep it civil.  I'm not writing to create argument. I am writing to seek solace and to expound on where our campaign can go next.

Where do we go from here? The answer is a conundrum: simple, yet difficult.

In the next few days, the news is going to be all about the losses.  For the supporters of Hillary Clinton, we need to stand strong and weather the criticisms.  We need to listen to that which is fair.  Indeed, there is a lot of fair criticism out there, but we need to not get wrapped up in it.

So, what do we do?

1. Stay on Message - Over the past few days, the level of hatred has been rising here at MyDD.  Unlike most of you, I am new here, and I would not like to see this place go the way of DailyKos and The Huffington Post.  Let's face it.  The Obama folks have just as rational a reason to support their candidate as we do.  We may see it as group think and being for all the wrong reasons, but it does not invalidate their desires anymore than their false ideas about Hillary invalidate ours.  So, we must avoid baiting and taking the bait, and we must elevate the discourse so that we can move forward and win.  Attack when necessary, but do not go for collateral damage just because you can.

2. Take a Breath - I am not advocating that you stop coming to sites and posting, but maybe it is time to take a half step back and look at the bigger picture.  Barack Obama is the undisputed front runner now, but in a lot of ways, that is a relief.  The harsh glare of the media is now upon him, and if my cursory views over the past couple of days are any indication, then the free pass seems to have expired.  The reason Hillary has been dealt with so harshly is because we were arrogant.  We thought we would wrap this up by Super Tuesday, and it did not happen.  Let the Obama people have their moment.  They are already falling prey to the comfort of the lead, and if we have learned anything in the past 16 years, the media likes nothing more than to destroy that in which they created.  Again, be thoughtful.  Don't bait. Just be there, ready to take up the reigns, and then we can truly be the Comeback Kids.

3. Contribute - Supporters are going to be shaken to the core, and they will start questioning if Hillary has a chance.  I will tell you today I was incredibly heartened.  After realizing that I wasn't getting the same campaign emails that a friend was getting, I signed up to be on Hillary's Team, even though I had already donated a couple of times.  After putting in my email address, the website flashed that 123,000+ people have donated in the month of February alone. Keep it up!  Even if it is only a couple of dollars, it will still help get out the vote, and it is needed now more than ever.

4. Volunteer - I heard on the news that Hillary is not yet on the ballot in my home state of Indiana.  You can bet I will be calling around tomorrow to see what I can do to make it happen.  It is amazing to me that my primary might actually matter this year, and I plan on making sure that I do everything I can do to make it even more sweet.  I am sure there are things that you can do in your state.  I am close to Ohio, too, and I think I will plan on going to a rally for her if there is one close to the State line.  Use your imagination, there is plenty you can do.

5. Persevere - I have followed the Clinton's since I was 12 years old (I am 32 now), and if they have taught me anything, it is to persevere.  Things are never as bleak as we think they are, and we will prove to the world that Hillary Clinton is the best choice for President of the United States.  It will be easy to get caught up in the negativity that will be thrown at us over the next few days.  I say listen to it, let it wash over you, and then reject it!  Just as we believe that Hillary will be there for us once she is President, we need to be there for her now, more than ever!

I've crunched the numbers (none / 0)

Worst case scenario, Obama is up by 131 in pledged delegates after June 4th.

That's highly unlikely, though. He can lose Texas by 5 points and possibly still win the most delegates in Texas.

It should be at about 180 pledged delegates by June 4th. Though I don't see it going that long. Most likely party pressure gets to Hillary and she drops out by March 6th (two days after disappointing performances in Texas and Ohio).

Re: I've crunched the numbers (none / 0)

Yeah, I suspect this race will be over by March 5th. The media and the public seem ready for the Obama vs. McCain race already.

Re: I've crunched the numbers (none / 0)

I disagree with you.

I see Obama's support starting to slip, especially as his relationship with Rezko is exposed.

He has no credibility, already, among those not blinded by the fanboi rush, there is still time to salvage the election for a Democrat.

So maybe the money people will wake up.

And with all due respect, and I may be wrong, the diary struck me as a concern troll.

Re: I've crunched the numbers (none / 0)

do you honestly think that anyone outside of the blogosphere has even heard about Rezko??

I bet out of the general public, less than 1% have even heard the name...

Yeah They heard about Rezko... (none / 0)

But they don't care.
If Rezko was a lobbyist or on trial for bribery, then I would worry, but Rezko is actually a pretty simple guy who is on trial for something silly; attempting to sell his influence in Illinois politics to the highest bidder. He got caught, and now he is on trial, and with complete lack of anyone having given him a political favor, no one cares about him.
Rezko has already done the most damage he can possibly do, which is getting his name and friendships with the Illinois' politically powerful in the press, but that is far as the damage he can cause goes.
He'll stand trial, he'll either get convicted or acquitted, and that will be the extent of his story.
If Rezko was going to do any harm, it would have been in Illinois on Super Tuesday, but Illinois still went to Obama by two thirds. Most telling is that the Chicago paper's that have covered Rezko have endorsed Obama.
Hillary Clinton die hards, get over Rezko, he is not going to help her or McCain. Bringing up Rezko just looks desperate, and might I remind you that it was at the South Carolina debate where Clinton foolishly uttered Rezko's name, and that was exactly when her campaign started to go down hill.
No one likes a muck racker, and bringing up Rezko is the worse form of muck racking.
If we could be convicted of guilty by association, then we would have to go to jail, and Hillary Clinton would be handed one of longest sentences.

Re: Yeah They heard about Rezko... (none / 0)

So the money from Saddam's money man to Rezko is just minor stuff to you?

Google Auchi Rezko Obama

Also Note who bought the building Rezko sold to Auchi

This is gonna be a Willie Horton like you cannot imagine because Saddam's money may have bought Obama's house.  Coupled with the muslim upbringing and when the chips are down I am with the muslims quote its Rove's election to win.

Now it may be possible that they don't want to win it, but if they do  Obama falls like a sack of potatoes.

Get real. (none / 0)

"I see Obama's support starting to slip...."

It certainly is slipping in MD, VA and DC!

That was such a big "slip" that he made today.

Re: she will beat him silly (none / 0)

Even if she beats him in every race in March and April he'll still hold the delegate lead.

Re: she will beat him silly (none / 0)

Not without MI and FL though. That's a big problem. If Obama tries to disenfranchise their votes he can write off those states in the general.

Re: she will beat him silly (none / 0)

Actually...if Hillary raises a stink about those votes, she'll CAUSE Obama to lose Florida in the general. Michigan? give me a break

Re: she will beat him silly (none / 0)

Obama has already written off the votes in FL with his memo about how FL shouldn't count. Stupid and idiotic yes, but he will lose FL in the general as well as probably MI. Lots of state by state polls show Obama doing worse than Kerry. I wouldn't count on Obama carrying all the Kerry states. In fact, I would count on him losing some of them.

Re: she will beat him silly (none / 0)

you have no doubt?  You must not have eyes etheir then.  Obama has won all 8 contests since super tuesday by 20-30pts.  Oh yeah, I thought she was supposed to have won this thing by now?  Actually her plan was 2/3rds correct, 100 Million $ + Bill Clinton = win.  I think she forgot people actually were going to vote.

and after obama played the race baiting race card after nh - we knew this would go to the bitter end to pa and beyond..

but pretend if you must...

Re: she will beat him silly (none / 0)

Are you still claiming that Obama played the race card?

You have it completely backwards. Obama called the Clinton campaign on their use of the race card.

I think it is time for Clinton supporters to start thinking about losing gracefully.

Re: she will beat him silly (none / 0)

I mean didnt Bill cap it nicely when he said that Obama's win was no different that Jessie Jackson who had also won there.  How many other people have won SC but not the nod in the past (like idk JOHN EDWARDS) why not compare Obama's win with his?  I think you know the answer to that.  Dont think for a second the Clinton's wouldnt not LOVE to back Obama into the Jessie Jackson corner.

Re: Hillary Supporters: Time to Take a Breath (none / 0)

bottom line is
men are not voting for a woman (and are not planning to do so in the next 100 generations).

women..well they are finding explanations for the usual self degradation (bill, the wave, change blah blah blah)

Re: Hillary Supporters: Time to Take a Breath (none / 0)

wrong. Many men (and women, and young and old, blacks and Latinos) aren't voting for THIS woman.  She has a history which is relevant and voters have a right to weigh everything they know about this candidate.  Conflating Hillary's success with the success of women everywhere is getting old.  Obama can move us beyond this lazy thinking when he chooses Sebelius or another progressive woman for a running mate.

Re: Hillary Supporters: Time to Take a Breath (none / 0)

Amen.  My problem with Hillary is with Hillary the person, not her sex.  I have zero problem having a women lead this nation, i have serious reservations with this women.  I know its smart to make it seem like she's a victim and she's loosing BECAUSE she is a women and therefore making women feel obligated to vote for her.  I'll take Hillary at her word, "Im running as a women, not because i'm a women".  She's loosing AS a women, not BECAUSE she's a women.

Don't count out the Clintons (none / 0)

one thing that can't be argued, they know how to win elections.  It's not over yet for a number of reasons.  Any speculation on a winner at this point is just that -- speculation.  It doesn't matter which dog is leading in the stretch, it matters which dog crosses the finishline ahead.

We'll see how the media treats Obama now that he's the frontrunner.  Focused attention, positive or negative, could help him or hurt him, depending on how it reads in Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

A moment of sobriety here -- Clinton won in New York, Massachusetts and California, came damn close to a tie in Missouri.  She would carry Florida and come damn close in Michigan if those states would campaign.

Ohio is it's own demographic -- hard to predict.  there and in Pennsylvania the white middle and working class is a stronger factor than any other state yet to vote.  That leaves Texas, still a toss-up.  All three are toss-ups.

to review -- New York, California, Massachusetts, Florida -- too close to count in Missouri and Michigan -- Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas make one damn impressive list of primary wins, pretty much every monster but Illinois.  These are not state structures or voters you want to dismiss or alienate by blowing off the importance of their vote.

Obama could roll on to wins in March, or not.  If not, it's a whole different ballgame.

Sexism is real.
