MD-04: DONNA EDWARDS WINS

Still waiting on results from MD-04 where progressive challenger Donna Edwards is trying to take out entrenched Rep. Al Wynn. Matt Stoller is out in the field and has been reporting some good numbers from the precincts that have reported. Cautious optimism...

Stoller calls in to tell me that they have two precincts in.  Montgomery County #521 which went 59% to 35% for Wynn last time, went 508 votes to 167 this votes this time around for Edwards.
Also, Prince Georges County 13-13 which went 60% to 38% in favor of Wynn last time, was 415 (Edwards) to 432 (Wynn) this time.

So, way early. But two precincts in with favorable results.
Update (Chris): 0504 Montgomery 371-161. In 2006 it went 280-161 for Edwards last time. Monto 1313: 2006 Edwards got 348-122. This time, 654-148. Mont Co 13-15: 489-94 in 2006. 694-92. Looking excellent.

Update [2008-2-12 23:9:32 by Todd Beeton]:With 51% reporting Donna is up 59-37. She's expanding her lead now. Amazing. Chris Bowers has some thoughts on what an Edwards victory means.

Update [2008-2-13 0:17:14 by Todd Beeton]:WashingtonPost.com has called the race for Donna Edwards. Huge victory tonight. Congrats to all who really worked hard on this race, particularly Matt Stoller who really went all in on this race. Great work!

Wow. You guys better not be getting my hopes up. Cause there is some serious giddiness kicking in right about now.

Re: MD-04: Some Promising Signs For Donna Edwards (none / 0)

What's the story on irregularities in this vote?  OpenLeft is reporting some problems:

... The board of elections has alerted a judge about the possibility of a need for court intervention so that sheriffs would be ordered to go to the judges and secure the materials, both the machines and the memory cards.  Intuitively, the board is hoping that the threat of this action will get them to cease and desist their 'rebellion'.

Re: MD-04: Some Promising Signs For Donna Edwards (2.00 / 3)

How nice to have a primary where we're all on the same side.  If we win this one, I will apologize to Matt Stoller for every mean thing I ever said about him, after he stood in the snow all day working for Donna Edwards.  Heck, I'll apologize right now.

Re: MD-04: Some Promising Signs For Donna Edwards (none / 0)

If Stoller is live as he appears to be, he deserves double props.  I was volunteering at the Rockville HQ for Donna and I gave up due to the horrendous weather and a nasty 45 mile ride back to Chez Crablaw.

All respect to Stoller for showing serious fucking work ethic either way.

I am up in NYC and I believe we are all having the same crappy weather.  Man, if Obama wasn't on the ballot, I have a feeling about 12 people would have shown up to vote in the congressional primary.

I donated to her, I'm glad she won.

Here's hoping she has the courage to do the right thing.

Let's be clear here.  Change = a movement = Donna Edwards. Obama needs her, very much.

Re: MD-04 (none / 0)

Obama didn't even do a press release about the Wynn endorsement.  I think we are all going to be proud of Congresswoman Edwards. :)

Hopefully next time she gets a different direct mail company.  I received a fundraising plea yesterday that was dated at the end of January and postmarked on February 9th.

Re: MD-04 (2.00 / 0)

I believe Wynn's support for Obama is a one-way street.

Wynn is EXACTLY the kind of incumbent we need to get rid of.

Way too early, and a godawful weather mess (none / 0)

I am not celebrating until certification by the State Board of Elections, even if she appears 15 points up.  More champagne for you optimistic non-curmudgeons, I guess.

Re: MD-04: Some Promising Signs For Donna Edwards (none / 0)

Actually, that raises the question, if Wynn loses tonight does he retain Superdelegate status (all congressman are supers right?)? I would think he maintains it until the election right?

I was wondering that myself... But Donna Edwards endorsed Obama too so it doesn't really matter.  That seat is going to Obama.

Re: MD-04: Some Promising Signs For Donna Edwards (none / 0)

Sitting members of Congress are superdelegates.  The Democratic National Convention happens this summer.  And, should he (hopefully) lose, Wynn would still be a Congressman until January 2009.  So, I would assume he'd still be a superdelegate.

Re: MD-04: Some Promising Signs For Donna Edwards (none / 0)

Meanwhile, one of the few good House Republicans, Wayne Gilchrest (MD-1), is facing two primary challengers. Apparently there was unrest because of his moderate nature and that he is one of two House Republicans to consistently oppose Iraq war measures. (The other being Walter Jones of NC).

Gilchrest is trailing 41-32 with 12% in.

This is an R+10 district, so while the Democrats might have a chance of picking this seat up if Gilchrest loses, it's more likely that we'd replace a good Republican with a bad one.

Re: MD-04: Some Promising Signs For Donna Edwards (none / 0)

Seems to me, it would be a barnburner of an open seat.

With Edwards in a safely blue district, Maryland solidly blue for President, and all the other Dem incumbents safe, it's not as if the rest of solid blue Maryland will have anything better to do than to go to the mat to get another legislative partner in Congress. I mean, unless they'd rather travel to WV-2 or VA-11.

Mikulski and Cardin aren't up this year, so they can campaign for our nominee. This is a GREAT pickup opportunity.

Possible Pickup in MD-01 (none / 0)

If I've added correctly, these results from the Washington Post (95% of precincts reporting) show that almost as many Democrats voted yesterday as Republicans. With some effort, this seat looks like a possible pickup.

U.S. House, District 1 Democratic Primary
Frank Kratovil 24,772
Christopher Robinson 19,476
Steve Harper 10,604
Other 7,785

Total Democratic voters: 62.637

U.S. House, District 1 Republican Primary
Andy Harris 29,646
Wayne Gilchrest * 21,401
E.J. Pipkin 14,033
Other 2,181

Total Republican Voters: 67,261

And from his short bio on WaPo, Democratic winner Frank Kratovil seems like a good candidate.

Wynn in deep trouble, trailing by 21 points with 26% reporting. Gilchrest catching up a little, now 7 points behind.

Re: MD-04: Some Promising Signs For Donna Edwards (none / 0)

Now Wynn down by 20 with 30% in. So unless he wins the rest of them by 10 points, he's toast.

Any chance Wynn pulls a Liberman?

Any chance Gilchrest switches parties if he loses and runs as a Dem?

Re: MD-04: Some Promising Signs For Donna Edwards (none / 0)

Wynn: I don't know.  I don't know what Maryland's law is regarding qualifying for independent status on the ballot.

Gilchrest: He could switch parties this year, but remember that there will be a Democratic nominee for that seat decided tonight (if the numbers hold up, it looks like it will be Frank Kratovil).

Does anyone know if Maryland has a runoff law?  Harris only has 40 percent right now.

It's a shame about Gilchrest. My parents live a few miles from the eastern shore. It's bad enough we're stuck with Castle in DE, now it looks like the eastern shore will be stuck with a far-right ideologue.
