Disclaimer: I am the Online Outreach Director for SNAPPAC
Students for a New American Politics PAC is a student organization founded at Yale University in the aftermath of the 2004 election. The lesson that emerged from those disappointing results was that the only way to bring about a progressive majority would be to actively involve a new generation of voters to fundamentally change the political landscape in America. With the goal of critically engaging students in the emergence of a progressive majority, SNAPPAC began in the spring of 2005 as a politically action committee focused on providing financial assistance for students to actively work on progressive campaigns across the country. This effort not only helps cash-strapped campaigns by providing critical and talented campaign staff, but also allows students to gain the experience necessary to run future progressive campaigns.
SNAPPAC has been actively involved in fundraising efforts in order to provide 50 $2500 fellowships this summer. Yesterday, in snowy New Canaan Connecticut, SNAP hosted a fundraiser featuring two of our previous endorsement recipients, Ned Lamont and Congressman Chris Murphy.
Congressman Murphy spoke eloquently about how important SNAP was to making his a winning campaign. He noted that the two SNAP fellows his campaign received in June 2006 effectively doubled his staff. SNAP is proud of to have endorsed this all-star of the democratic freshman class.
Jim Himes also spoke about the importance of his campaign and detailed how fundamental American values have been ignored by the Republican failures of the past 7 years. Jim Himes not only has the perfect experience and ideas to serve Connecticut's 4th District, but the guy's a great speaker- better than all of the presidential hopefuls according to some people at the fundraiser.
SNAP was proud to announce the we would be endorsing Jim Himes this cycle! Chris Shays' departure from Congress is well overdue.
Overall, the fundraiser was a resounding success, thanks to help of our wonderful Host Committee and the generosity of some of Connecticut's progressive elected officials.
SNAP will be hosting another fundraiser on February 19th in Boston, MA. For more information about that event please contact us.
How Can You Help?
We need your support for this innovative and effective program. There are many ways you can get involved, help in our effort, and help us lay the groundwork for victory in the coming elections.
Please visit us at Snappac.org
If you are interested in starting a SNAP chapter on your campus, or know someone who would be, please contact us.
If you know a student who could benefit from the SNAP fellowship program, please pass along a link to our website and encourage him or her to apply.
The most important way you can help us is with your financial support of our fellowship program. Every contribution puts us that much closer to funding another student organizer, putting more in summer '08 and forging another future progressive leader. Please visit our ACTBLUE page and contribute today in any amount you are able.
Finally, please help us spread the word about SNAP to your friends and family. Send them an email, encourage them to visit our website and learn more--, and ask them to contribute, if they are able. You can also do this by hosting a house party or reception in your community (please contact us if you would like to do so).
