GA-Sen: NBC News Calls It For Chambliss

Some real results trickling in:

97% reporting

Saxby Chambliss 57.4%
Jim Martin 42.6%

Update [2008-12-2 19:30:11 by Todd Beeton]:While it's probably way too early to have enough data to determine trends, it is disturbing how consistently Chambliss appears to be over-performing his Nov. 4th vote percentages in every county for which some votes have been reported today. You can compare CNN's Nov. 4th map & Dec. 2nd map.

Update [2008-12-2 20:16:5 by Todd Beeton]:Nate says what I'm thinking:

I haven't found a single county with a significant percentage of the vote in where Chambliss isn't performing better than he did on November 4. This looks like a 14 point win for him or something.

Update [2008-12-2 20:27:8 by Todd Beeton]:It's worth noting that Martin stronghold Fulton County has not yet begun to report and DeKalb County has just begun to report. If Martin is going to catch up, this is where he'll do it.

Update [2008-12-2 20:55:34 by Todd Beeton]:Sean Quinn:

The gap is 250,000 votes with over 1,000,000 in. We know that Fulton County hasn't reported the heavy African-American precincts yet, but I'm also surprised the race hasn't been called yet.

Update [2008-12-2 21:2:37 by Todd Beeton]:NBC has called it for Chambliss. Sigh. So much for 60.

----------------------------------------------------

Polls in Georgia closed at 7pm Eastern.

Results will be coming in HERE.

Some last minute potentially good news from Sean Quinn on the ground:

We're hearing that there are lines in Athens (home of the University of Georgia) in Democratic counties. We also hear DeKalb has been doing particularly well. The staff here is dialing voters in the last-minute push.

I think we will be lucky if it is this close... Obama's conspicuous absence in campaigning probably will be takes as well as his conspicuous absence of campaigning in the Appalachian states during the primary.

I'm leaning towards your end. From a psychological standpoint, this is a no-brainer. From a campaign standpoint, it's not even close. This will be the ultimate test of our ground game, because we literally have nothing else in our favor.

I was voter 112 at 8:25 in my South DeKalb precinct.  There was no line although all the machines were in use when I signed in.

I am guessing that Saxby will take it by about 6-8 also.

Bacon County is located in the southeastern portion of the state.

From 3500 to 28.  A drop off in turnout in a run off is expected, but something's not right with only 28 votes.

66.0% -- 34.0% with 10% in now.

From what I recall on election night, McCain/Chambliss led by a rout with the first third or so that were counted, and then it steadily got closer as the night went on.

Lessons to be learned...

1. Revotes almost always benefit the loser.

  1. You can't go blue in GA without heavy AA vote.
  2. You can't get heavy AA vote by running the whitest man in the country.

Re: I agree (none / 0)

No fucking way. Obama has inherited what everyone in the world understands to be a gigantic disaster. In order for him to lose approval rating in two years time, he will have to make big, huge mistakes.

Seriously, we could not possibly have a better slate to work from. Obama succeeding is just turning the boat around. If he fails, then none of this matters anyway.

But I give it two years at most. We've seen her game, and and it ain't great. Once her actual job gets harder and she's still playing to the lower 48, her approval rating in Alaska will dwindle away. The country will soon follow. She doesn't seem the type to know when to leave the party.

Re: you need some snark (none / 0)

Be serious.

The only shot Martin ever had was on November 4th, and the only reason he didn't lose that night is because the Libertarian candidate snagged enough voted to prevent ol' Sagamore Hickanooney from taking a clean 51%.

Obama's decision not to campaign and Sarah Palin's decision to campaign had no bearing on the ultimate outcome of this race.  Martin was toast the day after the November 4th.  All the first election did for him was to postpone his inevitable loss.

It sucks, but honestly, is anyone really surprised by how this went?  Did people really believe that we were gonna win this race?

Re: you need some snark (none / 0)

Said it over and over. To win, Martin had to challenge Saxby's GOP cred, split the vote and get the Libertarians to pull more votes away. Wouldn't have been hard, Chambliss has made some moves that are to the left of how Georgia likes to roll.

But running commercials pointing out that Saxby was in favor of the FairTax (in language that only FairTax proponents would recognize) ensured that he was viewed as precisely the right type of Republican for a self-respecting Libertarian. Yes, Jim Martin (or the DSCC) actually did this. It was possibly one of the stupidest decisions by any candidate in this entire election cycle.

Re: Goodbye 60 for '08 (none / 0)

There was never a Hello 60 to begin with. It was just Democrats mantra to justify the Lieberman cavein. If prominent Dems thought that there would really be a 60, don't you think they would have thrown everything and the kitchen sink into GA? I have been saying this since Nov 5, Martin had no chance in a runoff.

If Franken loses by 50 votes, I wonder if Senate Democrats would save a fraction of the scorn they use against Naderites for their lovable Independent DEmocrat(no, make that Democrat, in Harry Reid's words)  from CT who campaigned against Franken and while he was never a real factor, he could very well have influenced 50 voters to show up at the polls in MN .

On social issues, yes, we're liberal compared to the Sean Hannity/James Dobson view of America.

On fiscal policy not so much.  At least not really liberal when compared with the rest of the first world.  We want a more leftward tax policy than what we've had, but we would never go for the tax structure of most European nations.

Personally, I think we would have been better off losing this on November 4.  I was kind of hoping Chambliss would stay above 50%.  Jim Martin only got close on Obama's coattails.

A wise decision by Obama to stay away, I think.  So let's find some GOP votes for health care in the Senate.  I just don't think Harry Reid is up to this.

hey, who says (none / 0)

Susan Collins or Olympia Snowe won't switch over if Franken wins, the same way Richard Shelby of Alabama switched in 1994 to give the GOP a Senate majority? Collins voted against the late term abortion ban act, voted against removing Bill Clinton, against CAFTA, member of the Gang of 14, and even won re-election with 61% of the vote in a generally bad GOP year. If Franken wins, we could have 60 after all.

I have no love for Chambliss, and contributed to Martin's campaign.

I knew it was over when Martin called on a certain rapper known for glamorizing misogyny to headline for his campaign yesterday.  It was a choice to not just lose, but to lose on the low ground.

Piece of shit.

Re: GA-Sen: NBC News Calls It For Chambliss (none / 0)

Are you kidding me? Ludacris did not cost Martin any votes. Blacks were simply not going to turn out in the same numbers for a senate runoff as they were for a historic election.

Do not judge a rapper by his lyrics. You want to investigate the Rolling Stones lifestyle? Or even John Lennon's. White rockers glamorized by many progressives?

Why is this even mildly surprising? (none / 0)

All one had to do was pay attention to the atmosphere around you in GA. It was clear a lot of republicans were determined to show up during the reelection. A lot of the casual voters voted in the General Election which favored Obama-Martin in GA. Sure Martin got a higher percentage than obama, but he lost those who showed up mainly for Obama in the reelection.

I never got this whole Road to 60 hype. Jim Martin would have required a lot of resources to even match his Nov 4 percentages.

I voted out of obligation. I pretty much had no hope Martin had a chance of winning.
