PA-Sen: Specter Vulnerable

Pennsylvania being the bona fide blue state that it is just might be in the mood to oust the second of what used to be its two Republican Senators in 2010. A moderate in name and sometimes in deed, Specter is certainly more representative of his state than Santorum ever was but apparently not enough so as to avoid what looks to be at best a tough re-election fight.

The latest Research 2000 numbers that kos unveiled this morning show Specter under 50% against any Democratic opponent. Chris Matthews, as the one candidate with the most name recognition, performs best against Specter.

Specter 45
Matthews 44

Specter 48
Murphy 36

Specter 49
Schwartz 35

What should perhaps be even more worrisome to Specter is that he can't even break 50% in a Republican primary

Specter 43
Toomey 28
Undecided 29

29% undecided among Republicans he's been representing since 1981? That's really bad.

This is going to be a top tier race next cycle and I'm looking forward to ousting yet another of the faux moderates that enabled the radical agenda of the last 8 years.

It goes way beyond Specter (none / 0)

After the FTW display last night by the Senate Republicans, all of their non-Southern incumbents will be vulnerable to challenge.

It was an amazing display, a genuine Thelma and Louise moment, with McConnell et al driving the Cadillac over the cliff.  Literally dozens of YouTube moments for 2010.

They think American workers are being paid too much.  They'd rather let the economy fail than pass up a chance to break the unions.

Repeat after me: Reckless, corrupt and incomptent.  Reckless, corrupt and incompetent.  Reckless, corrupt and incompetent.

Re: PA-Sen: Specter Vulnerable (2.00 / 1)

Okay Todd, I know that we are partisan here and don't get me wrong, I have no problem with getting rid of Specter as long as it is with the right person...but he has been the occasional ally for us and is one of the few Republicans who has been willing to stand up to the Bush White House. There is no reason to insult the man who has continued to do his job for this state while fighting back age, cancer, and other health problems.

Being from Pennsylvania I can tell you that there are far far worse people from this state (many on our side of the aisle) who might have designs on that seat. At least with Specter you know you are getting an honest Senator who conducts himself with class and dignity.

Re: PA-Sen: Specter Vulnerable (none / 0)

I'm from PA too and I wouldn't describe Specter in such glowing terms. He's hardly honest or classy. Specter has made statements of being against something Bush wanted to do so he would sound good, but then he'd turn around and back down when it came to sticking to it with a vote or what not. He's unprincipled and dishonest and can't be depended on unless he's not actually needed.

Re: PA-Sen: Specter Vulnerable (none / 0)

I dont know if I want Patrick Murphy running.  He would have to give up a seat that leans Democratic, but could be a tough hold if former Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick gets into the open seat race.  Murphy is also not polling well against Specter and Murphy is well known in the Philly media market.

this is good news, but (none / 0)

I will not having Chris Matthews as a US Senator. He is a hateful Clinton bashing Bush-endorsing Gore trashing cumbucket. Please Dems, run anyone but this loser.

Calm down, he just signed a brand-new contract with MSNBC this week.

Re: PA-Sen: Specter Vulnerable (none / 0)

If Specter and those like him are "faux moderates," what's an example of a real Republican moderate? Or, for that matter, a Democratic moderate?

Re: PA-Sen: Specter Vulnerable (none / 0)

Lincoln Chaffe would be a pretty good example of an actual moderate/lefty that was a republican and Snowe is pretty much a moderate. I guess you could say Collins is a moderate as well, but she's several steps to the right of Snowe.

Re: PA-Sen: Specter Vulnerable (none / 0)

I would acree with that, and Specter is generally linked to Snowe and Collins.

Schwarz v Murphy and other observations (none / 0)

Congressman Murphy is fine for his district in Bucks County, but do we really need another conservative Dem in the senate?  I like Bob Casey and all (Santorum obliterator!), but I believe PA can replace its moderate R from Philadelphia with a progressive D from that same region.

Allyson Schwartz has a more liberal voting record than Murphy, and is one a hell of a fundraiser.  Montco is a great county to have your base of support, and her profile would greatly appeal to voters all over the Southeast of the state, including wealthy, Dem-trending, and fast growing Chester County.  And not to press this point too hard, but don't underestimate the Jewish factor in what would likely be a close race with Specter.  There are lots of upscale persuadeable Jewish voters the Philly region that could tilt this race either way, and Schwartz's background and links to healthcare would surely be an asset.

All I know though, is that if Toomey makes a run against Spector, I'm weighing the idea of ponying up some tactical donations to get the crazy winger on the ballot.

Re: Schwarz v Murphy and other observations (none / 0)

I think Joe Sestek would be an interesting option too. Philly area congressman, retired rear admiral, pro-choice, jewish. If Toomey challenges Specter we should help him as much as possible to win the primary.
