PPP: Chambliss Maintains Lead

A new Public Policy Polling survey (1,276 LVs, Nov. 29-30, MOE +/- 2.7%) of the Georgia Senate race shows Saxby Chambliss continuing to hold a steady lead over Democrat Jim Martin in tomorrow's run-off (11/24 results in parentheses.)

Chambliss 53 (52)
Martin 46 (46)

If Chambliss does win tomorrow, it looks as though it will be due to a combination of overwhelming support among white voters and a not high enough turnout among African-Americans to put Martin over the top.

Chambliss is up 71-28 on Jim Martin with whites. For Martin to win the runoff with that performance, the electorate would have to be 34% African American. Given that it was only 30% for the general election with Barack Obama at the top of the ballot and that early voting was less than 23% black, that does not seem particularly likely.

Chambliss's advantage among white voters on Nov. 4th was similar: 70-26. What is way down is the percentage of early voters who are African-American. Sean Quinn reminds us:

Whatever turns out to be the case, at the close of early voting Wednesday, according to the Secretary of State's office 345,564 had voted, and 22.5% of those votes were African-American, an ominous dropoff from the 34.5% of black early voters for the general election.

But with the uncertainty surrounding the turnout, this race should still be considered anyone's game.

Still, according to Georgia Democratic Party spokesman Martin Matheny, thousands of volunteers were hard at work across the state knocking doors in the rain and making phone calls on Jim Martin's behalf. The lines on Election Day will be much shorter than during the general election, given the much shorter ballot, and Democrats here think that most of its voters are going to turn out on Runoff Day itself.

You guys have really stepped up to donate to Jim Martin over at our Road to 60 ActBlue page. Since being added to the page on Nov. 6th, Martin has received 71 donations for a total of $3,342. Great work. Today, however, I encourage any last minute donations to go through the DSCC. Every donation of $5 or more made up until 9pm Eastern tonight will be matched 2 to 1. So give to Martin HERE to help the GOTV effort on the ground. This entire election is about turnout and your dollars can still have a very real impact.

It ain't easy being the Black Community.  First it was all your fault that Prop 8 got passed.  Now it's going to be your fault that Jim Martin loses, because they wouldn't show up for him the same way they showed up for the black candidate!  Now, I don't personally agree with all the scapegoating, but at least we're singling out a group that has plenty of experience in the role of scapegoat.

Re: PPP: Chambliss Maintains Lead (none / 0)

The turnout can still surprise us, but Martin ran a piss-poor campaign and the Chambliss campaign, as slimy as it is, is anything but lacking. Combine that with the fact that this election will mean far, far more to the Republicans and I predict quite high Republican turnout tomorrow. He needed a marketing team that understood Georgia politics, and he didn't have one. He had a glorious opportunity to win once, and it was wasted. Now it's pretty much a certainty. The losing party never makes the mistake of not voting twice.

Christ, look at this. I don't care that it's wrong, it's devastating:

And I couldn't even find the one that's currently airing that just says, "Who is Jim Martin kidding?!" And I didn't even mention the one that accuses him of killing children.

Now compare that to the Jim Martin ad that's been running. This is how he has responded to all this crap, since I see the DSCC ad about 10 times more than Jim Martin's:

Ooooooh, scary. Saxby Chambliss didn't vote for more government entitlements. You might as well put up an ad saying that Saxby Chambliss doesn't support the right to choose. It just doesn't play down here. Had they gone after Chambliss early on as a Washington RINO, they might have had a chance when there were more candidates in the race. But they didn't.

From what I've heard from Georgians, Martin is not exactly inspiring, or all that great of a candidate. Obama was pretty smart about his tactics-- under the radar and as helpful as could be w/o risking anything. Palin too though, a very smart play of hers to raise the stakes against Obama, with a '10 theme of divided gov't.

Re: PPP: Chambliss Maintains Lead (none / 0)

You are 100% right on all counts. Obama campaigning here would have done nothing for Martin and would have been a lost cause anyway. Palin, meanwhile, was the GOP's wet dream. The only person that could have made for a better appearance would have been Zombie Reagan.

I love this state, but it's as red as red can be. The way to beat Saxby was in the primary or via a substantial third party candidate run. It would have had to be a sneak attack. We came about as close as we could have hoped for.

Of course, as you said, Jim Martin didn't help. We need a big guy with serious populist cred like Jim Webb or Jon Tester.

Re: PPP: Chambliss Maintains Lead (none / 0)

Jim Martin did a decent job the first time around capitalizing on the Obama wave. But he is getting pummeled in the ads here and I see very few effective counter ads. Saxby has been blanketing local tv with really negative ads bashing Obama and Jim Martin. All those red staters pissed about an Obama victory are rejuvenated to strike back and Saxby's campaign is tapping into that vibe.

Plus more old people will probably vote the second time around. Jim Martin's best chance was the first time around. I will vote Jim Martin (I voted for Allen Buckley in 2004, and Martin in 2008) again. But I don't have much hope.

Palin (none / 0)

You still think she's going to be a factor in GOP politics?

I know she's going to campaign for Republicans in 2010, but Huckabee or Jindal are more dangerous candidates in 2012.

Re: Palin (none / 0)

Once more people know about Jindal and his experience with exorcisms, he will be toast.

I do think that Huckabee is the most dangerous Republican out there.  He knows how to appeal to moderates without being too oogy boogy scary.

Re: Palin (none / 0)

People do not care about that. Believing in biblical creationism is as dumb as exorcisms.

Jindal is a smarter guy than Palin. He carries the same religious "credibility" with the religious looneys. The only weakness for Jindal is he doesn't have the same charisma as Palin. ANd that does count for something in a democracy where one has to lead.

Martin never had a chance

Weather is going to hurt (none / 0)

It is bitter cold here in Atlanta.  Tomorrow morning, even in the city it is going to drop below freezing with wind chill in the low 20s and the high is only going to be in the low 40s.  This is very bad for any GOTV effort in the city.

Now, Jim Martin did the best he could and he did make the GOP waste an awful lot of money down here.  Unfortunately the Democratic Bench is very thin in Georgia and it is going to take some time to build it back up.

That being said, I will still be heading to the polls before work.

We also have a run off election in the PSC.

Re: PPP: Chambliss Maintains Lead (none / 0)

78 percent of white skinned people expressed support for Shambles. Yes, they belong to the RepubliKLAN party.

Palin appears the playboy bunnY for middle class Ayn Randian Republiklan members although she appears a fundie freak who loves to kill animals from helicopters.

As for Martin he just might appear one of those conservoDemocrats, so liberals really have noone to vote for except hold their noses and vote for Martin.

As for Jindal, he looks like David Duke, the KKK leader with a tan.

Yay! Jindal/Duke 2012!
