On the campaign trail for Saxby Chambliss today, Palin had two messages for Georgians: first, that sending Chambliss back to the Senate was the only way to check Obama's power:
"We need Saxby because we need checks and balances in Washington, and we will not have that if Saxby is not re-elected," said Palin. "With one party in control of the House and the Senate and the White House we need a conservative who will speak for themselves."
And second, that re-electing Chambliss would be step one on a path toward rebuilding the damaged Republican Party.
And she cast the Georgia runoff as the first step in rehabilitating the Republican Party, wounded by losses in November including the defeat of the McCain-Palin ticket."It takes rebuilding and I say let that begin here in Georgia tomorrow," Palin said.
She touted Chambliss' support for gun rights as well his opposition to abortion and tax hikes.
"We must send Saxby back to the United States Senate," she said.
But with conservative crowd-pleaser Palin scheduled for 4 stops on the eve of the run-off, once suspects her appearances were an acknowledgment that success in this run-off is more a function of whose base turns out than anything else. Without Barack Obama's star power, polls are showing that Martin is struggling to turn out his crucial African-American base, although campaign events with Rep. John Lewis and Ludacris today seem designed to help do just that.
It's not too late to give to Martin's campaign over at the Road To 60 ActBlue page.
