A slip of the tongue from Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) is fueling speculation that Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.) could be chosen as President-elect Barack Obama's replacement in the Senate.Blagojevich referred to Davis as "senator," according to the Associated Press. The lawmaker has expressed an interest in the position and the governor said Davis would make a great senator.
I don't know a whole lot about Danny Davis, though a cursory glance shows that he is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and he has a Progressive Punch voting score of 94.12, ranking him at roughly the top-25th percentile of Democrats in the House. In 2002, Davis voted against the Iraq War, and voted against supplemental funding for the war in 2007 that did not include a timeline for the withdrawal of American troops. Over this past summer, Davis voted against the amendments to FISA. These are a few of his votes.
It could be that The Hill is reading too much into the comments by Rod Blagojevich, that the embattled Illinois Governor merely had a slip of the tongue rather than an accidental early announcement. But if he didn't, it appears as though there could be worse choices to replace Barack Obama in the United States Senate, at least on a straight policy rather than political leve.
