Josh Debate Thread

Newest posts on top - earlier ones below the fold...

  • Does McCain seem a little...odd tonight?
  • Only two minutes left. Mercy.
  • I'm not sure what the total number of viewers for this debate will be, but I bet a huge number changed the channel after a few minutes. Is anyone enjoying this format?
  • McCain lied about sending troops into Lebanon
  • Ambinder: McCain: "There are some things that Obama just doesn't understand" in re: foreign policy... Obama turns it around: "I don't understand how we ended up invading the country that had nothing to do with 9/11..."
  • It's bizarre that during the first debate, Lehrer practically begged the candidates to engage with each other - now Brokaw seems to be ragging them for engaging. Ugh.
  • BO on McCain taxing employer health benefit: "what one hand giveth, the other taketh away"
  • "That one??"
  • Brokaw keeps complaining about time limits. Lame.
  • Great energy answer from Obama
  • Is it just me, or is the mustache ratio in the town hall audience off the charts?

  • McCain really redundant with his talking points. Tip O'Neill. Ok, we get it.
  • Good news for Obama: this debate is quite boring.
  • McCain wants to give tax buts to CEO's?? Boooooo...
  • Question to McCain about sacrifice in the future - McCain warns of cutting programs, but sounds mostly like his boilerplate stuff about spending.
  • McCain drops a Feingold reference again...and we learned today that he's adding another day in Wisconsin this week. Coincidence?
  • McCain mentions McCain-Feingold as a reform accomplishment - think it's the first he's mentioned it in a debate.
  • McCain calls the woman with a question cynical too. She must be thrilled.
  • I think Obama just called that woman 'cynical;' but returns to blaming Republican policy.
  • Obama responds by pointing out McCain's lobbyist advisers
  • More from Obama hitting re-regulation
  • McCain already going negative on Obama...
  • McCain suggest Whitman for Treasure Sec., Obama floats Warren Buffet (I can't imagine him wanting that job)
  • Did McCain just propose a modern-day HOLC?
  • The big wildcard in my mind? Whether Brokaw will bow to Republican pressure and bring up Ayers on his own so McCain doesn't have to...
  • Obama out of the box with an attack on McCain's philosophy of deregulation...great start.
  • BO also hits news of executive junket post-bailout...the dials on CNN are sky-high...

Re: Josh Debate Thread (none / 0)

McCain has no ideas.  All he says is that he's a "reformer."  Big deal.

McCain's wandering around the stage at odd angles again.

Re: Josh Debate Thread (none / 0)

Obama mentioned that Bill Clinton left Bush with surpluses.  Excellent.  We need to remind people Dems manage the govt far better than Rs.

ONE THIRD OF EVERY HEALTHCARE DOLLAR (none / 0)

goes to INSURANCE COMPANIES..

One in seven insured families end up getting socked by uncovered costs so badly they declare bankruptcy because of them..

Notice Obama mentions employers.. all but the wellest people who aren't in a group still wont be able to afford care.. even if its priced "fairly"

Putting health records online (none / 0)

Makes it easy for the insurers to save money on rejecting people! (currently its the thing they spend the most money on, discovering who is a bad risk so they can reject them.)

ONE THIRD OF EVERY DOLLAR GOES TO THEM..

There's that $5000 again.. People don't realize how LITTLE that is.. its nothing.. Real Cost is MUCH higher..

Re: Putting health records online (none / 0)

Yeah, the $5000 needs to be really laid out there for people.  Most people with "good" insurance don't understand how much their employers contribute.  $5000/year insurance is little better than crisis insurance.  Sky high out-of-pocket...the kind of insurance that will benefit you ONLY if you have a MAJOR medical issue (and you'll still be left with a very hefty tab).

My employer pays about $10k toward insurance, for me to end up with small copays, $2000 out-of-pocket, and a plan that has no deductible.  I consider it "good" insurance, and something most people could live with.  $5000 just won't cut it, though.

Of course, the president won't be the one to set the freakin' fine, my friend, Senator McCain.

Re: Josh Debate Thread (2.00 / 1)

Good thing I am no longer in college.  McCain has said "My Friend" so many times if I were playing a drinking game I'd be in the bathroom barfing by now.

Discomfort. (none / 0)

Re: Josh Debate Thread (none / 0)

So when does McCain refer to himself as a maverick?  I am getting tired of "my friend" and this could mix it up for those playing along at home.

Incidentally, could this debate be more boring?  My wife and I are falling asleep and we paid attention the entire way through the first two debates.

Re: Josh Debate Thread (2.00 / 1)

What the fuck is John McCain even talking about?  We can't go into Rwanda to prevent a holocaust because when we leave, something worse than a holocaust might happen?

What is worse than a holocaust?

Obama.

By a mile.

Not close at all.

Going back to the primaries, I've never felt Obama did better in a debate than he did in this one.
