John McCain's October Surprise

John McCain has occasionally spoken about how lucky he feels to still be alive having "survived three plane crashes." The LA Times digs deeper into those crashes and delivers what could be the most brutal takedown of one of the pillars of McCain's candidacy for president, his military experience.

Of McCain's days as a Naval aviator, The Times writes:

Mishaps mark John McCain's record as naval aviator: Three crashes early in his career led Navy officials to question or fault his judgment.

John McCain, welcome to your October surprise.

The LAT documents his crashes.

John McCain was training in his AD-6 Skyraider on an overcast Texas morning in 1960 when he slammed into Corpus Christi Bay and sheared the skin off his plane's wings.

McCain recounted the accident decades later in his autobiography. "The engine quit while I was practicing landings," he wrote. But an investigation board at the Naval Aviation Safety Center found no evidence of engine failure.

D'oh!

More:

In his most serious lapse, McCain was "clowning" around in a Skyraider over southern Spain about December 1961 and flew into electrical wires, causing a blackout, according to McCain's own account as well as those of naval officers and enlistees aboard the carrier Intrepid. In another incident, in 1965, McCain crashed a T-2 trainer jet in Virginia.

And then there were two incidents after he was deployed to Vietnam.

After McCain was sent to Vietnam, his plane was destroyed in an explosion on the deck of an aircraft carrier in 1967. Three months later, he was shot down during a bombing mission over Hanoi and taken prisoner. He was not faulted in either of those cases and was later lauded for his heroism as a prisoner of war.

Not faulted...except that The LA Times actually does imply that McCain might have avoided being shot down had he not been such a reckless pilot.

Three months later, McCain was on his 23rd bombing mission over North Vietnam when a surface-to-air missile struck his A-4 attack jet. He was flying 3,000 feet above Hanoi.

A then-secret report issued in 1967 by McCain's squadron said the aviators had learned to stay at an altitude of 4,000 to 10,000 feet in heavy surface-to-air missile environments and look for approaching missiles.

This portrayal of McCain plays into a narrative that the Obama campaign has become rather fond of lately, which is that McCain's behavior is "erratic." A couple examples from the LAT article about the erratic behavior of young John McCain.

This examination of his record revealed a pilot who early in his career was cocky, occasionally cavalier and prone to testing limits. [...]

The young McCain has often been described as undisciplined and fearless -- a characterization McCain himself fostered in his autobiography.

The media has been clutching its pearls over the Obama campaign's use of the word "erratic" when describing McCain presumably because of an ageism subtext, but these tales make clear that in the case of John MCCain, erratic behavior is not a function of his advanced years, rather it's simply a quality of his character. From the young McCain's cockpit antics to the last 2 weeks of wacky behavior on the campaign trail, as Claire McCaskill eloquently documented on Fox News Sunday yesterday.

Now, on the other hand, if you look at what Barack Obama's ad says, it's just talking about what John McCain did the last two weeks. He was erratic. One day, no bailout. The next day, a bailout. One day, "I'm suspending my campaign." The next day, "I'm not."

One day, "I'm going to debate." The next day, "I'm not going to debate." The next day, I go ahead and debate. One day, "I'm not going to leave Washington until we have a deal," and then he's on a plane out of Washington after the deal's kind of blown up. So it really -- there has been a lot of erratic behavior.

You're correct.McCains being erratic,or  just reckless as I see it,is nothing to do with old age ( although that most likely exascerbates matters).Thats what he is and has always been ,as the great article in Rolling Stone pointed it.

The Rolling Stone article is a much more thorough take-down.  Anyone left with any respect for McCain after reading it needs his head examined.

   CINDY MCCAIN: No

   QUESTION: Never?

   CINDY MCCAIN: No. No.

QUESTION: Even if you're first lady?

Stupid economy (none / 0)

While this plays well to Obama supporters, the economy voters want to hear about the stupid economy and how the candidates help enlarge the family paycheck.  McCain would love to have the race turn to character.

Stick with the stupid economy.  McCain=Trickle down economics-tax cuts for the wealthy.
Obama = Middle class first.

Re: Stupid economy (none / 0)

Obama needs to stay on message about the economy.  Rolling Stone and LA Times are doing just dandy on their current path.

Let's stay away from this. (none / 0)

If we want to get into McCain's personal life, we should be talking about his association with racist groups, South American terrorists, and the Keating Five.  Talking about a few plane crashes won't be something the American people will care about and will only cause a backlash against us.

It depends. (2.00 / 2)

His temperament could be an issue.  If he is seen as erratic and/or a hothead and this is visible during his campaign and/or his debate performances, it can have an impact.  It highlights a narrative that voting for McCain is too risky.

Re: It depends. (2.00 / 1)

His temperament is just AN issue, it's a critical issue in the campaign. Bush's narcissism, lack of curiosity and general foolishness have caused a great deal of harm; McCain's hair-trigger temper and shoot-from-the-hip style are just as important and possibly as dangerous.

Re: It depends. (2.00 / 1)

His temper is no doubt an issue.  Yet if we use his military service to point that out, it'll come back to bite us in the ass.

No Soldier has a perfect record (I sure as hell didn't), and it makes us look bad if we go after his.  Pointing out his and Palin's associations with terrorist groups and other extremists is a much more effective way of challenging his character.  After all, how can the right bring up Ayers when one of McCain's biggest fundraisers was a sponsor of South American terrorists, and Palin belonged to a anti-American separatist group and went to a church that blamed Jewish unbelief on terror attacks in Israel?

This information explains 2 things:

1. This is what happend when Mr 895 out of a class of 899 becomes a naval aviator.

2. This explains Sen McCain's disdain for Spain...

Re: John McCain's October Surprise (2.00 / 1)

This is exactly the same tactic that the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth employed to smear Senator Kerry's military record.  It was wrong then and its wrong now.  Whatever I might think of Senator McCain as a politician or person, it doesn't negate the fact that he did serve his country and did spend several years as a POW.  This kind of tactic will not likely work against him.  John McCain is wrong on a lot of issues, we should stick to those.

The L.A. Times is a right wing paper... send your complaints to them.  Why a right wing rag would try to undermine their nominee is beyond me, but it's probably a trick to get Obama to "go there"... don't worry, he won't...

But, we sure as hell can!

Re: John McCain's October Surprise (none / 0)

I agree with you completely.  It's a huge mistake to suggest that McCain's service was other than heroic.  I don't care if you were a cook or a clerk or a hot shot fighter pilot, all servicemen are heroes, period.

I would emplore my friends here just to stay away from McCain's service record altogether.  It's not something we are going to win on.  Politely say thank you for your service Mr. McCain.  Then focus on the dozens of other legitimate issues McCain should be criticized for.

It's certainly okay to work around the edges of his service.  You could ask why he has repeatedly voted against veterans benefits.  Or why did he change his mind when he originally opposed the Bush admin on torture when it so clearly endangers our servicemen.  Or question his judgement regarding Iraq or Afghanistan.  But stay away from his actual record.  You won't be helping Obama even if you think you are.

MIDDLE CLAASS = MIA (1.00 / 2)

Re: John McCain's October Surprise (none / 0)

My read is that this is a trick--trying to sucker the Democrats into a debate about John McCain's military record--it's a hail mary.

The best way to play it for us is to not respond--or better yet to shift the discussion back to the economy. If the LA Times wants to run some stories that's their business--but if it's seen that 'liberal blogs' (or worse, the Obama campaign) are pushing this story then the blowback could truncate what has otherwise been a terrific news cycle for us.

If there's some real skeletons in his closet then I'd suggest that the 'shot across his bow' be done privately to scare off any potential swift-boating compaign they've got planned for October.

BIG Mistake...HUGE (none / 0)

I think it is a HUGE mistake to attack Obama's military record.  While I believe everything the LAT has to say in it's article, I think that most people will not or will view it as a slam against those who served this country.  They won't take the time to make the connection of his erratic behavior from day one.  I think we should just leave this one alone and focus on the economy.  We are winning, not need to mess it up now.  Let McCain take the chances.

My dad was a naval aviator too (2.00 / 1)

For 20 years during the same time McCain was. And for most of that time he was carrier qualified.

He, like most naval aviator had exactly the same number of successfully landings as take offs.  And that record isn't something he's all that proud of... I mean most of his contemporaries managed to do the same. It was just kinda of expected.

And he's mentioned in the past that typically the Navy disapproves mightily if you bend one of their airplanes.

My dad is a life long Republican and he's on the bubble this time.  If the GOP can't get my dad to vote for a fellow naval aviator, it's has to be in a world of hurt.
