You know something's screwy when Fox News is defending Barack Obama against smears by "Joe" the "plumber."
At an RNC event for John McCain in Ohio earlier today, Joe "the plumber" Wurzelbacher was confronted by a man in the crowd who asserted that "a vote for Obama would be a vote for the death to Israel."
Joe's response:
Actually I'll go ahead and agree with you on that one...I agree with you, I really think that would be a problem.
Certainly the McCain campaign denounced this baseless slur against Obama right away, right? Not quite. In a statement, McCain/Palin spokesman Jeff Sadosky said:
While he's clearly his own man, so far Joe has offered some penetrating and clear analysis that cuts to the core of many of the concerns that people have with Barack Obama's statements and policies...
For a look at just the sort of clear analysis they're talking about, you have to see this Fox News interview in which Shepard Smith tried three times to get an answer out of Wurzelbacher as to why he believes "a vote for Obama is a vote for the death to Israel." Wurzelbacher, of course, had no reason (although he did incoherently spew the McCain talking point BS claiming that Obama wants to meet unconditionally with America's enemies) but instead tried to hide his ignorance behind a call for people to find out for themselves.
"...I just want to push it back on your listeners to go out there and find out why I would agree with something like that."
And...
"Listen, I know you wanna really get some answers on this one, I'm just not gonna help you out here, Shepherd. Let people go out and find, that's what I've been telling people."
And...
"I'm sorry, Shepard, I'm not trying to be dancing around this, I honestly want people to go out and find their own reasons...Go out and get informed, that's the biggest pitch I have for people."
It's disgusting the way the McCain campaign is desperately exploiting this guy to appeal to the lowest common denominator; indeed, in the process, Joe has revealed himself to be the very walking talking breathing embodiment of the lowest common denominator that McCain/Palin need to win next week. And the way they're doing it -- casting Joe as a product of the American heartland and as someone who represents "real" American values -- is particularly pernicious. To his credit, Shepard Smith isn't buying it and in fact pushed back aggressively on the mis-information Joe was spreading:
I just want to make this 100% perfectly clear. Barack Obama has said repeatedly and demonstrated repeatedly that Israel will always be a friend to the United States no matter what happens once he becomes President of the United States. His words. Umm, the rest of it...man...some things...it just gets frightening sometimes.
You gotta watch it (h/t Think Progress):
Predictably, the Freepers are up in arms, one guy calling Smith "in the tank for Obama." His rant ends with this unintentionally observant comment:
Shep at the end was indignant....like Joe was some back woods hick.
Yeah...and?
