Todd's Debate Thread

An auspicious beginning: "Hey, can I call you 'Joe'?"

Update [2008-10-2 22:7:46 by Todd Beeton]:Oooh, Palin played the "John McCain knows evil" card.

Update [2008-10-2 22:13:17 by Todd Beeton]:Joe just KILLED among the CNN focus group. I was just thinking, Joe just makes you feel confident in his ability to be in the White House.

Update [2008-10-2 22:13:17 by Todd Beeton]:I love that Joe is not letting Palin have the small town arena to herself.

"Say it isn't so, Joe!" Did she really just say that? Was that the roll out of her new catchphrase?

Update [2008-10-2 22:20:37 by Todd Beeton]:Oh Lord. She doesn't understand the question. So she's playing talking point roulette.

Update [2008-10-2 22:20:37 by Todd Beeton]:Uhh, what's she talkin about? She's back to infomercial mode. Did she just give her closing statement? 10 more minutes, guvn'r.

Update [2008-10-2 22:23:57 by Todd Beeton]:Wow, Joe choking up while talking about not knowing if a child is going to make it was incredibly moving. I agree with Jonathan, it was the moment of the debate.

I love that Biden is going after the very premise of John McCain as a maverick. This guy is rocking this thing.

Update [2008-10-2 22:27:1 by Todd Beeton]:The CNN focus group is flatlining as Palin talks about passing budgets as mayor and governor.

Update [2008-10-2 22:34:49 by Todd Beeton]:OK, Palin just suggested that if we're not careful, we might someday lose our freedom. Really? What is this idea that our freedom is so fragile that someone could take it away? Doesn't sound like American exceptionalism to me.

Update [2008-10-2 22:34:49 by Todd Beeton]:Biden: sharp, focused, informative, compassionate, passionate; Palin: sloppy, glib, scattered, charming. This was no contest.

Update [2008-10-2 21:48:3 by Todd Beeton]:Palin: "I'd believe the leader of al qaeda." Huh?

Update [2008-10-2 21:48:56 by Todd Beeton]:"Nu-clear", Sarah. "Nu-clear."

Update [2008-10-2 21:51:42 by Todd Beeton]:Biden is ON FIRE on the issue of diplomacy.

Update [2008-10-2 21:57:23 by Todd Beeton]:On the CNN focus group, the women in the group loved what Joe said about diplomacy in that last sequence.

Update [2008-10-2 21:59:26 by Todd Beeton]:"I haven't heard how John McCain's policies will be different from George Bush's" is off the charts with the focus group, especially women. So far that looks like Joe's YouTube moment of the night.

Update [2008-10-2 21:59:26 by Todd Beeton]:The ladies in the focus group are LOVING Joe's answers.

Update [2008-10-2 22:1:26 by Todd Beeton]:Joe is killing her in this portion of the debate. He's got to stop that heavy breathing though.

Update [2008-10-2 22:5:58 by Todd Beeton]:The CNN focus group really flatlines when Palin speaks except for a few spikes.

Update [2008-10-2 21:37:35 by Todd Beeton]:"The chant is Drill baby Drill!" Another Tina Fey moment.

Update [2008-10-2 21:46:2 by Todd Beeton]:Palin: "We don't need early withdrawal." Earlier than what!? You see, folks, any withdrawal timetable proposed by Obama and Biden is surrender and the only responsible withdrawal is when McCain says it is!

Biden: "We will end this war. For John McCain there is no end in sight." Nice.

Update [2008-10-2 21:46:2 by Todd Beeton]:She's using the word "you" referring to Biden, but she's not looking at him, instead looking at the audience. An odd effect and all Biden can do is smile at Gwen as if to say "Are you seeing this?"

Update [2008-10-2 21:21:56 by Todd Beeton]:Joe is doing a good job of contrasting Obama as tax cutter to the middle class and McCain as tax cutter to the wealthy and the corporations.

Update [2008-10-2 21:31:32 by Todd Beeton]:Shorter Palin: "Question, schmestion! I'm gonna talk about what I wanna talk about!" And, did she really just demonize "East Coast politicians"?

Update [2008-10-2 21:33:37 by Todd Beeton]:Umm, what do you mean you don't want to talk about the causes of climate change???

Joe: I think it's man made, it's clearly man made. If you don't understand what the cause is, it's impossible to come up with a solution." Thank you, Joe!!

Update [2008-10-2 21:6:29 by Todd Beeton]:Palin is borrowing a page out of the Obama playbook: look right into the camera and talk about people struggling.

Update [2008-10-2 21:9:53 by Todd Beeton]:Is she doing an impression of Tina Fey doing an impression of her? She literally winked at the camera.

Update [2008-10-2 21:11:32 by Todd Beeton]:She is remarkably good at speaking into the camera. If only Joe had been a local TV anchor! Pick up the energy, Joe.

Update [2008-10-2 21:14:15 by Todd Beeton]:This is hilarious. She's treating this like an infomercial. She's just speaking to the audience as if Joe and Gwen aren't even there.

Update [2008-10-2 21:16:0 by Todd Beeton]:Haha. She's ignoring the questions altogether. Nice move. "I may not answer them the way you want me to but I'm going to talk to the American people." Turn to the camera, blink and smile.

Update [2008-10-2 21:19:1 by Todd Beeton]:It's patriotic to say "government you're not the solution, you're the problem!?" WTF? It's patriotic to be anti-government? Really?

Oh and Biden saying Obama wanted more oversight as a priority in the bill was a joke. The DEmocrats got nothing of note  accompllished in that respect with the bill.

Palin is also looking us in the eye, Joe was mumbling and looking down.

Frankly, Palin is more listenable at this point -- Joe seemed dismissive of the topic.

Re: Todd's Debate Thread (2.00 / 1)

Joe is looking down and at Gwen, which reads as not being able to look the audience in the eye.

And worse, they're transparently talking points.  One awesome thing about Obama is that even when he's just repeating talking points, he doesn't sound like that's what he's doing.  Biden's also not bad, possibly because he changes some of the words.  Palin says exactly the same phrases, word-for-word.

Adults can choose their partners, unless it threatens "traditional marriage: one man and one woman."

Uh, you fundies are the only ones threatened, Sarah.

Biden may not support gay marriage, or rather, folks can call their own marriages what they like, but he at least is for granting complete civil rights, which Palin skirts, of course.

Wow, this debate failed for the most part to expose Palin's lack of knowledge because Ifill's priority was to keep moving even when Palin refused to answer questions at times and would stick to her talking points on whateveer topic enters her mind lest she forgets to mention them later on.

Even Katie Freaking Couric asked better questions. All ifill did was move on quickly enough to enable Palin to move on to the next talking point.

Re: Todd's Debate Thread (2.00 / 2)

No, it was a great strategy for Biden.  He needed to win and make sure that people knew he won.  He hammered McCain, I especially loved the maverick segment.  He could NOT afford to be seen as bullying her, I think he established himself as a much stronger candidate on basically every issue, but he couldn't go for the jugular, Obama needs women to win and they would've been turned off.  Biden did fantastic.

Re: Todd's Debate Thread (none / 0)

I agree with your logic, but you can't attack a woman, no matter how incompetent she is, or he would've have been seen as bullying and that 5-6 point lead would evaporate overnight.  It will have to be Obama who lands the knockout punch.  Joe Biden did his part, every single person in American knows he won, some are just too biased to admit it.
