It's the Economy, Stupid

So says Chris Cillizza:

Asked whether they thought McCain had "shown effective leadership in dealing with the financial crisis, voters roundly panned the Arizona senator.

In each state [Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin], less than one in four voters agreed with that statement while a majority of voters said McCain had not demonstrated leadership during the recent crisis. (Full numbers after the jump.)

Obama's numbers on handling the crisis were significantly stronger -- though far from rosy. In three of the four states a small plurality said he had effectively dealt with the financial fallout while in Wisconsin 44 percent said Obama had done well and a similar 44 percent said he had not.

[...]

Asked which candidate better understood the economy, Obama held leads over McCain ranging from 12 points (in Colorado) to 21 points (in Wisconsin). These numbers mirror data from a Washington Post/ABC News poll released on Monday in which 53 percent of voters said they trusted Obama on the economy while just 37 percent opted for McCain.

With numbers like these, it's little surprise that Barack Obama is holding significant leads in each of these four swing states, according to Washington Post/Quinnipiac polling. To be exact, Obama is up 9 points (52 percent to 43 percent) in Colorado, and even larger margins in Michigan (54 percent to 38 percent), Minnesota (51 percent to 40 percent) and Wisconsin (54 percent to 37 percent). The results above are largely in line with the Pollster.com trend estimate for Colorado, a bit higher for Obama than Pollster.com shows in Michigan (though in line with trend), and a bit higher for Obama than Pollster.com shows in Minnesota and Wisconsin (though when you turn up the sensitivity in both states and weed out bad polls -- online surveys and those from ARG -- the Q polls are largely in line with the trends in the states).

With numbers like these, it's also little surprise that McCain continues to devote his paid media expenditures not to economic issues but rather to mudslinging. But do Americans really care about partisan sniping at a time when the economy -- despite yesterday's huge rise in the Dow -- is taking a real hit?

Sorry for the borrowed headline -- I watched "The War Room" on the Sundance Channel last night...

Imagine you are a "Movement" functionary (none / 0)

are you going to start the post-election dance of recriminations and second-guessing now, or can you wait 3 weeks?

The affirmative case for McCain cannot be made; being a lying adulterous warmonger who is ignorant about economics has its downside...

So you go for the negative case against Obama; he is also a liar who knows nothing about the economy, and by the way he's a communist socialist elitist terrorist black muslim. Thus you justify your 6 figure salary and retain street cred amongst the right wing zealots who control your future employment prospects.

Since you sold your soul long ago, these decisions are unhampered by what others would call a conscience.

The one very interesting thing I thought is how in the state results, John McCain had a blowout victory in Colorado.  I wonder if there was something unusual about the areas of Colorado that participated.

McCain the PanderBear (none / 0)

Seems like his economic package has AARP stamped on the front of it, really narrowcasting to the over 55 crowd who are probably the most squeamish with Obama from a culture and trust point of view.

This MIGHT close him a few points in some battleground states.

Good Point.  This might be his last ditch effort to save Florida, which looks to be quickly going Strong Obama.

Hopefully Obama will be more radical about the economy, and stop listening to all those pseudo-Chicago boys and their junk.
