Delegate Count Update

From First Read below find the delegates won tonight (plus the new delegate totals):

Democrats:

NHTotal
Clinton924
Obama925
Edwards418

Republicans:

NHTotal
McCain711
Romney421
Huckabee114
Thompson-8
Paul-4

[editor's note, by Todd Beeton]I deleted the incorrect First Read tidbit about 4 different people winning the first two contests. As Jonathan explains below:

This is the second time, not the first, that four different people won the Iowa and New Hampshire Republican and Democratic contests, with Dick Gephardt and Bob Dole winning Iowa and Michael Dukakis and George H.W. Bush winning New Hampshire (First Read incorrectly has Dukakis winning Iowa on their chart despite him coming in third in the contest behind Gephardt and Paul Simon).

not true, right?  1988?  Dole Bush Gephardt Dukakis?  (Cribbing from talkingpointsmemo)

What if Romney gets close seconds? (none / 0)

Does he win if they keep changing leaders?

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

Good to put it in perspective.

Hillary certainly won more votes, but the delegates were still even.

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

Not even - Clinton has far more Super Delegates - which puts her way ahead

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

Super Delegates are not held to who they are currently supporting however. A lot can change between now and then (including Edwards Superdelegates going to Obama or Clinton.) I do not know what the history of Super Delegates changing allegiances might be but I know that it is not out of the realm of possibility.

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

"Super Delegates"?  What the heck is that?  It sounds like a powerup on Super Mario Brothers...  This primary system makes so little sense to me... can someone explain?

Thanks,

Mike

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

Superdelegates are elected officials or officials from the DNC. They are allowed to endorse anyone they want, hence, their delegate distribution is not governed by the actual outcome of voting. If there is a brokered convention, they can become a very powerful group of people.

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

There's also Wyoming.  Romney won that caucus.  That makes five different winners in five contests.

Obama's AHEAD of Hillary in NH with delegates (none / 0)

He scored a total of 12 per the CNN Delegate Scorecard, with Clinton getting 11 and Edwards at 4.  Remember, it's the 15% majority rule per precinct, PLUS the statewide vote results.  Thus the superdelegates come into play.

How ya like THEM apples?

Oh and the current superdelegate totals are... (none / 0)

Obama = 9 pledged plus 3 superdelegates
Clinton = 9 pledged plus 2 superdelegates
Edwards = 4 pledged plus 0 superdelegates

Richardson, Kucinich & Gravel earned zip.

Re: Oh and the current superdelegate totals are... (none / 0)

Time for Richardson to drop out...

would absolutely love to see a three-person debate.

(I just wish Biden were still in - I think he would have done better than Richardson in NH... but maybe he couldn't afford it.)

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

can't super-delegates change their votes at any time?  And let's say that this goes all the way to the convention-- would the party actually be willing to let superdelegates swing the nomination to the candidate with less delegates from actual voters??

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

If it came to that a deal would be worked out...and there is no way to guess at this point what the deal would be.

Isn't the Republican counter completely wrong? (none / 0)

CNN and Time have completely different results than you guys. I still can't figure out where you're getting them.

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

Delagates don't matter people it will never get that far. We are nominating SOMEBODY on feb. 5th and the loser will drop out and supprt the winner. Momentum will decide a clear winner on feb. 5th, it ends there. Except that John Edwards will not drop out and begin campaigning for 2012! He will immediatley get the endorsment of Mydd and DKos.

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

Please Please Please stop disparaging our candidates (and this is directed at everyone who seems to think they have the right.) All three of our candidates would make excellent Presidents (and certainly would make better Presidents than anyone the Repubs can offer.) It is time to come together people.

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

After Mitt's horrible showings in NH and Iowa, he is likely finished.  I now expect McCain to surge ahead in Michigan and possibly take South Carolina as well.

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

I wouldn't say Romney did horrible in NH. I think everyone generally had a feeling he, McCain, would win NH and Michigan doesn't have a huge majority of far rigihtwingers so he gets some easy states in...then he'll have to compete against the other repubs for the support of the wackos and that's when it can get interesting. Frankly, I think Huckabee is still the front runner. With a race this wide open on the republicans side, who knows which way it will go.

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

Huckabee will win little besides a few deep South states.

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

If Romney can't win Michigan, where his family name is big, then it's going to be hard for him to win anywhere else.  So we ought to know pretty soon.

So, why hasn't the MyDD Nomination Delegate Counter been updated? Does someone on your site have to grab a calculator and throw a switch?

Re: Delegate Count Update (none / 0)

I agree about the stakes for Romney in Michigan.  Do or die time.  If Michigan goes for Hillary, but the DNC doesn't seat the state's delegates then the whole thing is a bust for Hillary.  Some seem to think that they will be seated regardless, but I'm not sold on that yet.
