2. New Hampshire: The January 8 Primary, Be A Part of It For Barack & Real Change

There is still time to volunteer in New Hampshire, but it will be over in a flash.  Most DC Area volunteers are converging on Dover, New Hampshire and staying at the Day's Inn, right by Obama Headquarters in Dover.  Volunteers traveling to NH are responsible for their own expenses.  It is possible that we might be able to match you with carpools traveling to New Hampshire, but it's too late to make any guarantees.  If you are seriously interested in traveling to NH, contact Jayne Thomasee, jaynethomisee@yahoo.com.  Howard Park is helping Jayne coordinate, contact him at hpark4@aol.com, 202-544-6262.

3. January 6, Meet Real Democrat Donna Edwards in Landover

Donna Edwards is the grassroots/change real Democrat running for Congress in Maryland's 4th District.  The primary is coming up soon on Feb. 12.  Join Donna Edwards for a "Woman to Woman Conversation" at 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the Prince George's Ballroom, 2411 Pinebrook Ave., in Landover, Entertainment by "Sense of Urgency" a jazz quintet.  FREE!  For info contact Carletta Fellows at 301-316-1880.

4. Voter Registration Deadlines: Jan. 12 in DC, Jan. 22 in MD

January 12 is the deadline to register to vote to be eligible to vote in DC's Presidential Primary on Feb. 12, voter registration forms are available widely including all city libraries.  The deadline to Register to vote in Maryland to vote in the Feb. 12 primary is January 22.   Know any 17 year olds in DC or Maryland?  As long as you are going to turn 18 before the date of the primary, even if you are still 17 on the voter registration deadline, you can register & vote in the Primary!

5. Get on the Bus! DC For Obama Trip to SC, January 18-21

This is the big one.  DC for Obama is organizing a bus trip to Columbia, SC. Note that the return date is Monday afternoon due to the long holiday weekend.  Transportation and basic accomidations will be provided.  This is DC for Obama's most important mobilization before the decisive South Carolina Primary.  Contact Ian Martinez-DCFO (ianindc@gmail.com) or Adam Barr (albarr@gmail.com).

6. Jan. 19, DC Delegate Selection Caucus

On January 19, DC Democrats (ALL registered Democratic voters are eligible to participate) will gather at McKinley High School, 105 T St., NE, at 10:00 AM (sharp!) to select Delegates for the Democratic National Convention in Denver later this summer.   Please come! Clinton supporters will gather to select delegates pledged to Clinton, Obama supporters will gather to select delegates pledged to Obama, etc.  The Primary on Feb. 12 will determine how many of those selected pledged to each candidate will be officially elected as delegates.  I, Howard Park, am a candidate for Delegate pledged to support Barack Obama, on the "Barack Brings DC the Vote" slate.  One of the  reasons we support Barack Obama is his commitment to voting rights for DC.   Our slate is endorsed by Democracy for DC and Mayor Adrian Fenty, DC Chair, Obama for America.  PLEASE COME CAUCUS AND SUPPORT BARACK OBAMA IN DC.

11. Phone Bank SC for Obama

Can't travel? make a commitment to call about 50 people in South Carolina per week via the campaign's "virtual phone bank."   This is ideal for busy supporters who can't commit to specific group phone banks but want to help out in their free time.  You can call as few or as many people as time allows, and the 50 people per week number only amounts to 10 calls per day.

If you're interested, please contact Paige at paige.shevlin@googlemail.com; she'll contact the South Carolina coordinator and get you a personalized user name and a password for South Carolina's electronic potential supporter network.

12. Students Mobilize for Donna Edwards

Students at the University of Maryland, College Park are organizing along with activists, families and other community members from all over Prince George's and Montgomery County to support Real Democrat Donna Edwards in her bid to beat DINO Al Wynn (MD-4). Edwards is running a strong campaign to unseat Wynn, who consistently sides with Republicans on key votes such as authorizing the war in Iraq, the 2005 bankruptcy bill, Dick Cheney's energy bill, repealing the estate tax, and other pieces of radically conservative legislation.  Edwards is the executive director of the Arca Foundation, and has experience working in various community organizations as well as for Public Citizen. She is being supported by Progressive Maryland, and is endorsed by Emily's List, League of Conservative Voters, Democracy for America, NOW, and by the blogs MyDD, Atrios, and others.  The 4th, which is one of the most Democratically partisan districts in the country, borders the District of Columbia and stretches along the beltway.  For more information, read this post at Free State Politics (Maryland's progressive blogging hub) or join the Facebook group here.

13. MCPA Update

The Montgomery County Progressive Alliance had a great 2007, and we're looking forward to an even better 2008. We'll start out working on the Maryland Primary (vote February 12) by making endorsements and volunteering to help candidates. We're organizing town hall events to discuss the 2007 special session of the Maryland Legislature and the upcoming regular session, inviting elected officials to speak to our group and listen to our concerns. We're meeting at least once each month and sponsoring special events such as the recent book talk by author Dorothy Fall, and cosponsoring events like a forum on immigration issues in Rockville and the Presidential Forum in Kensington a few months ago.

All this costs money. Please help keep MCPA working for you with your generous donation:
