North Carolina Senate: Draft Edwards!

[Cross posted on DailyKos]

I, like numerous others, was extremely disheartened by John Edwards dropping out of the Presidential race.  The issues he brought forth were so crucial and so in line with my ideals that I was willing to spend my winter vacation in below freezing Iowa rather than at home in California.  John Edwards has stayed true to his goal of giving a voice to those who have none and I do not believe he should stop now, instead he should challenge Sen. Elizabeth Dole for the North Carolina Senate seat.

The opportunity is there for the taking as beating Dole is clearly achievable.  A January 22, Public Policy Polling poll showed Dole's approval rating at

        Approve: 44%
         Disapprove: 33%
         Not Sure: 23%

This is worse than SUSA's polls for Gordon Smith

        Approve: 50%
         Disapprove: 38%
         Not Sure: 13%

Or Norm Coleman

        Approve: 53%
         Disapprove: 39%
         Not Sure: 8%

Both of which are regarded as seats that the Democrats could potentially pickup.

Unfortunately, she is right now beating both her challengers in the polls by a significant number

        Dole: 48%
         Hagan: 35%
         Undecided: 17%

        Dole: 49%
         Neal: 30%
         Undecided: 22%

All this would change with John Edwards in the race.  He would bring a big name, a great deal of funding, dedicated supporters, and great enthusiasm to the race.

I know a lot of people have been speculating about him becoming the next Attorney General, which would be wonderful; however, I would argue that being Senator would help America more.  We can be confident that both Clinton and Obama would choice strong and dedicated Attorney Generals, even if they are not as strong nor as dedicated as Edwards would be.  What we cannot be sure of is that we will be able to beat Dole in November.  So with a choice between one great Attorney General and a bad Senator or a fairly good Attorney General and a great Senator, I think the decision is quite easy.

John Edwards is a fighter and truly speaks for those who cannot, so why should he stop now?  He has nobly dropped out of the race for President but his influence should not halt, but rather flourish as an powerful Senator and possibly the person who could give us a filibuster proof majority in the Senate.

Update

I just created a Facebook group for John Edwards for Senate 2008 and the more people who join the more likely we'll be able to convince him to run.

I rather have Edwards somewhere in the DEM Administration.

It'd be nice to have him in an administration (none / 0)

but whichever spot in the administration he'd be will be a Democrat even if Edwards isn't there.  If he doesn't run for Senate it's likely it'll be a Republican.  Having a filibuster proof majority would be so valuable and imagine the legislation that Edwards would introduce.

Re: North Carolina Senate: Draft Edwards! (none / 0)

if he wants it, i'm all for it.  if he wants to take some time off, i'd be fine with that.

personally, my secret hope is that we get a democratic president and a year or two in, we are talking about Supreme Court Justice John Edwards.

Justice Edwards! (none / 0)

That would be great.
Is he qualified?

Re: Justice Edwards! (none / 0)

why wouldn't he be?  it's become a trend to pick judges, but it isn't a necessity, at least not that i know of.  granted, we'd need a strong advantage in the senate to push this through, as the republicans would probably mount a serious charge against it.

Re: North Carolina Senate: Draft Edwards! (none / 0)

Would he not be able to affect more people by becoming Governor of NC?

What would LBJ do?

Re: North Carolina Senate: Draft Edwards! (none / 0)

I've had the same thought.  I would rather have Edwards as President, but I think he could do a lot of good as Attorney General, Secretary of Labor or Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, or as a Senator

Would Edwards even beat Elizabeth Dole?

Honestly.

I would sign a petition to draft Edwards but would support him whatever he decides to do. I am and will forever remain an Edwards Democrat.
