SOURCES: Giuliani expected to endorse McCain, as early as Wednesday — in Los Angeles or Simi Valley.

But seriously, where else are Giuliani voters going to go?

If things continue the way they're going, McCain is poised for a win and it looks like Huckabee pulled conservatives from Romney in key areas. The problem for conservatives is that Giuliani is dropping out while Huckabee has no plans to do so.

When are conservatives going to take down McCain?

Update [2008-1-29 21:11:33 by Todd Beeton]:Giuliani campaign has confirmed that they are going to California tomorrow but won't confirm that he intends to endorse McCain.

Howard Fineman on MSNBC: "There are ongoing conversations between high levels of both campaigns, I have the sense more about how to do it than whether to do it."

It's virtually impossible for Giuliani to be the VP. He and McCain are both apostates.

McCain would definitely need to shore up the VP spot with someone who is right with the conservative base. It's the same problem George HW Bush had.

I can't see it. McCain needs to rally the social conservatives, and Rudy isn't going to do that. Fred Thompson could, but he seems irrelevant. Huckabee could, and that's my guess if McCain pulls away. But therein lies the problem for McCAin. Pulling in someone like Huckabee may expose him to losing the moderate/independent support that he needs. Granted, I have no idea on the numbers, and I probably have no idea what I'm talking about.

He's got the money advantage, and conservatives will now gravitate to him.

McCain would have been in serious trouble if he lost Florida, but a close defeat for Romney is not devastating - IF the conservatives rally around him in the next few days.

Hard to imagine. I mean, this is the guy who used to say he was pro-choice because he had a close relative die in an illegal abortion. Then, once he starts running for President, suddenly that doesn't matter any more. How could you not trust the sincerity of a guy like that?

I think the only way social conservatives can hope to take down McCain is if someone from the White House comes out against him. Honestly, maybe I'm in the minority, but I'd rather a Democrat run against McCain than Romney (the one I was most worried about was Huckabee in all honesty).

He figures that Romney can be anything people want him to be, and McCain looks very old and is a poor campaigner.

The media's love for McCain will be our biggest problem. We need to get him to blow his top in a public setting, so they have to stop covering for his bad temper.

I have a conservative, non-voting friend and he caught a chunk of the last debate and said he definitely liked Romney the best.

James Fallows from the Atlantic magazine came back to the US after 6 months in China and said, if you're a guy watching one event who has no idea who any of these people are, Romney definitely seems the best.

So there might be a pattern here. He's so phony if you get to know him, and the media will probably help us because they don't like his phoniness, but still...

i don't like romney, but (none / 0)

he does project something. look, i don't agree with him on the issues, but he does project an air of leadership. granted, some may feel that's an air of arrogance.

i probably don't understand the nuances of the process as well as you guys, but the thing with mccain is, besides his poor campaigning and his age, i think it'd be easier to highlight the differences on the issues and target one or two issues that could really define differences. the reality of dems is we often have a problem defining what, well, defines us to the general public. if the person is close, we get to say, hey, these are our causes. whereas, if romeny can mobilize social conservatives and pretend to be an economic savior, and if he can get a military/defense guy as his number 2 (say, lindsey graham?), i think we run into a whole heck of a lot of problems.

Oh man....this is funny. So much for Rudy's "grand plan"....its just so funny to see had had the front runners spot forEVER....then bam, has to drop out because he never finishes close in any of the elections....quite a magnificent flameout.

The emergence of McCain is going to help Clinton. It's a reality check on what we're up against and I think Dems in their gut believes Clintons a much better campaigner
