The Snub: It just got worse

You know The Snub must be bad, because already Obama is...well...lying about it.

"I was turning away because Claire [McCaskill] asked me a question, as Senator Kennedy was reaching for her [Clinton]," Obama said.

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archi...

Really? Seems like an odd time for her to ask a question, doesn't it?

Luckily, we can go to the photos and judge for ourselves:

Here's the precise moment he turned away:

Whats Claire doing here? She's clapping, mouth closed, and looking at Hillary.

Different angle, taken just a second before. You make the call. Where's Claire? And why isn't he looking at her?:

Incidentally, apparently David Axelrod didn't get the memo, because he has a different story:

"This was obviously an awkward day from that standpoint, and I don't think he wanted to stand there while Senator Kennedy was greeting Senator Clinton."

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0 108/Axelrod_explains_.html

Media accounts agree: He turned away on his own, with no prompting from McCaskill. However, I did read an account that said she tapped him on the shoulder after a couple of awkward moments of him with his back to Hillary. Maybe thats what they are latching onto. Pretty weak though.

Anyway....thank you once again, Barack, for not only needlessly bringing this public relations problem upon yourself, but making it worse by not telling the truth.

UPDATE: Question....anybody know where a video of this can be found? Also, further analysis: This was all taking place in a noisy Senate chamber. If McCaskill wanted to get Barack's attention, she would have had to do one of two things: tap on his shoulder or, because Teddy was standing between, yell out "HEY BARACK!". We know that the tap on the shoulder didn't happen, that is obvious from the 2nd photo. And we can guess that she didn't yell out his name, because every person's natural reaction to that is to immediately snap in the direction of the yell and look right at the person. What he did was sorta duck away and look to her left (2nd photo). And again, wouldn't she be looking at him if she was desperate to get his attention at such an awkward time? In other words..."Back, and to the left...."

UPDATE II: Thank you, Taylor Marsh, for your most excellent shout-out to this diary on your radio show today! Much appreciated.

Re: tips if you got em (none / 0)

Recommended, and thanks for doing this. The question boils down to this:

Did Barack Obama shake Hillary Clinton's hand?

The answer:

No, he did not.

He had the opportunity to do so.

He chose not to shake her hand.

Now, that's all that matters. Obama, Axelrod and McCaskill can spin it all they want. But, the fundamental truth is that clearly if Obama had WANTED to shake Hillary Clinton's hand, he could have done so. Obviously Hillary Clinton shook Ted Kennedy's hand.

Obama chose not to.

And, it says a lot about the man's pettiness, mean-spirit, and peevishness. He's a bully, just like George W. Bush.

Just like when he deserted his volunteers who worked so hard for his campaign in Nevada, and refused to give a "concession" speech. The campaign, aka, David Axelrod, said they didn't give a "concession" speech because they didn't consider it a "loss."

That isn't the point.

When people work so hard for your campaign ON THE GROUND, doing the grunt work (yeah, can you tell? I've been there, done that) it means the world to them to have you give a big speech thanking them, and vowing to go on in the campaign.

It's a real travesty that Barack Obama didn't do that. And, all the campaign could offer was "we didn't consider it a loss."

That's cold, David.

It's not, but the electorate considers personality as a very important factor - remember all the conversation about Clinton being so cold.  Things like this need to alert Obama to be more gracious and aware of his actions.  That's not only important for a candidate but for any elected official.

For me, this is criticism but criticism that Obama would be wise to use constructively.

Re: The Snub: It just got worse (none / 0)

Look I don't care if he snubbed her , I can't wait for Feb 5. for Hillary Clinton to come out on top.

I have been looking at the internals of polls that have come out after the whole south carolina election and ted keneddy and he seems not to have gotten any bounce from it , it actually looks like her support is getting firmer.

South Carolina is proving to be somewhat of an aberration in terms of how her broad support collapsed ( women , old etc) , across the Feb 5 states that have polled that broad coalition that helped in NH is still intact.

Another Tenessee poll out and she is ahead due to that base.

" Barack Obama may have won the South Carolina primary big, but in another southern
state with a much smaller black population he is not gaining a ton of momentum. Hillary
Clinton leads the state by a 43-32 margin. John Edwards is lagging at 16%.
"The primary electorate in Tennessee is only about 25% black," said Debnam. "Obama
continues to perform well behind Clinton among white voters, and he's going to have
difficulty winning primaries in states without large African American populations if that
continues."
Obama leads Clinton 60-20 among black voters in the poll, but trails her 50-22 with
white voters. After struggling with female voters in South Carolina, Clinton appears to
be back to form, leading Obama 47-28 with that group in Tennessee "

http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/P PP_Tennessee_Release_012908.pdf

Clinton 43

obama 32

Edwards 16.

Hope this continues. This is better news.

the additional issue here is that it also contradicts the idea he's this civil, non-partisan guy. so not really sure: part of me thinks that this is an inconsequential, passing storm. by TexasDems on Tue Jan 29, 2008 at 03:13:58 PM EST

Re: The Snub: It just got worse (none / 0)

I'm still not getting what Senator Obama actually did wrong.  If Sen. Clinton and Sen. Kennedy were shaking hands and having a conversation, what would have been the "proper" reaction, to stare her down?  If someone you were talking to gets approached, it's natural to turn and find someone else to talk to.

But let's turn this around a little bit:  If Obama and Kennedy were standing side by side and Sen. Clinton went to shake Sen. Kennedy's hand first, does that means she snubbed Obama by not acknowledging her presidential rival?

I don't think he snubbed her...I don't think she snubbed him.  I don't think they like each other very much at this point, but that doesn't mean this was anything more than one snapshot in time from a distance away with no context other than what Sens. Obama and McCaskill have already said.

I don't know whether this is going to have an impact on what happens next Tuesday, but I hope it doesn't.  We're electing a president, not 7th grade class officers.  I just think it's trying to score cheap points.

Re: The Snub: It just got worse (none / 0)

You don't usually win many friends to your cause by talking down to them.
I'm not an Obamamaniac nor a Clintonista nor a...whatever Edwards supporters are...I just think we should be focusing on something real.
A bunch of journalists have commented on it...better chisel it into stone because God knows journalists and commentators have never grasped hold of something insignificant and twisted it to stir up controversy.
What I was doing was approaching this from the other side.  Like I said, I don't believe that it was a "snub" on either side.  But if you want to call what Obama did a snub, isn't it also a snub to see two colleagues standing side by side and NOT first shake the hand of the one you are running against?
The answer is no, of course. If you're that politically calculating on the fly...then you honestly scare me a bit.
Like I said, I'm just frustrated at taking the time to debate this when we could be focusing on much more important things.

It was a social gaffe which demonstrated that this was rather a small man. Now in the scheme of things it's not up there with starting wars or denying healthcare to poor kids but as a pointer to a person's character it has loads of meaning. It like how a man treats his wife at a party, or how well he holds his drink. If you are a man and you can't see this or think it has something to do with teenage behavior you perhaps need to have a few lessons in social behavior.
