UPDATED w/ video: Kendrick Meek contradicts media on Bill Clinton's Jackson comment.

I got an unpleasant surprise over at dKos today when I posted this as a "developing story."  They basically called both me and Kendrick Meek a liar.  According to Tove in the comments here, Kendrick Meek was on MSNBC today and said there was another part to the question asking Bill to talk about historical black candidates.  I called Meek's FL office once and his DC office twice and got a confirmation that he was with Bill in SC, and that he did hear something extra that the staffer could not personally confirm, and that he was on with Chris Jansing on MSNBC at 2pm eastern.  I have not yet found footage of that.  I was hoping that maybe someone else might have seen it and tivoed it for some reason.  One commenter in my dKos diary did confirm that Meek said what I had heard, then proceeded to dump all over Meek's credibility.

The unpleasant surprise I got was that Josh Marshall and ABC had posted what they purported to be a full transcript of the interview, a transcript which does not include the part Meek said happened.  Of course, the juvenile supporters of a certain candidate who is classier than his supporters would rather believe their transcript and call Meek a liar and me a hack.

One reason this is an unpleasant surprise is that we were the ones doing the work on this and I sent Josh Marshall an e-mail asking nicely, or at least so I thought, if he had a more complete transcript.  He completely ignored that we were working on this in his post here and completely ignored my e-mail, even though both he and Greg Sargent did respond to my friend Jen, as she confirmed here.  I have been hard on him because I think he buys a lot of BS about the Clintons that is not true, so maybe that's why he didn't answer me.

For now, I am hoping to get a transcript of the Meek interview.  I have to admit that his staff did not seem interested in getting my message to him, for whatever reason.  I wonder if some of them are Obama supporters and don't want to help him defend Bill Clinton?  I am tired now and will go out to eat and rest after I post this.

Any help you can offer will be appreciated.

Re: Kendrick Meek contradicts media on Clinton com (none / 0)

Oh c'mon.

If the question was really "manufactured" and there really is some conspiracy against the Clintons by ABC News, don't you think Bill Clinton would have spoken out by now to correct it?

I'd encourage you and others not to spend so much time on this. There are more important things facing our nation. Really.

Re: Kendrick Meek contradicts media on Clinton com (none / 0)

I think Bill may be thinking it will go away faster if he merely ignores it than if he fights it.  But I don't talk to him that often and haven't asked him directly what his thoughts are on this.  And out there on the campaign trail they might be missing what is going around the internet.  The Obama people are much more internet savvy I think, because they have so many young people.

Re: Kendrick Meek contradicts media on Clinton com (none / 0)

It's not just been on the internet, it's been all over the cable news and was brought up on every Sunday talk show. Obama himself was asked directly about it on This Week, although he failed to take the bait.

In my mind, the Clinton campaign has been rather aggressive in pushing back against the media. Bill Clinton has never been shy about speaking out when he feels the media is portraying something he said incorrectly.

I feel that if ABC really had the balls and motivation to do something like that (highly unlikely in my view - why would they?), the Clinton camp would have responded forcefully by now.

My point is...if he was misquoted, the Clinton campaign press operation should jump in to straighten it out.

There seem to have been at least two sets of cameras there.  One would think this complete conversation would be on film too.  Odd that it isn't.

Why wont they provide the entire clip?

Ask Tapper, ask the bosses at abc?

Re: Kendrick Meek contradicts media on (none / 0)

Get a grip.  What I am saying is that there was a question missing from what you saw and that the comment about Jackson was in response to that.  How hard is that to understand?  I am saying what you saw may not be complete.

Re: Kendrick Meek contradicts media on (none / 0)

I thought Jake Tapper settled this argument once and for all:

Some supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, are inaccurately saying that her husband's comparison of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, to Rev. Jesse Jackson came only because a reporter had asked the former president whether a black candidate can win South Carolina, thus raising the subject.

The larger charge is that reporters were falsely painting the president as race-baiting.

It's not true. Clinton brought up Jackson with no mention of Jackson by reporters, and with no mention of the subject of whether an African-American can win by reporters.

Here's the whole transcript

Jake Tapper - False Pushback from Clinton Allies ABC 28 Jan 08

What possible counter-evidence to your argument would you seek beyond this transcript?

Re: Kendrick Meek contradicts media on (2.00 / 1)

I understand that a lot of people believe Jake Tapper.  But I am one of those "allies" of the Clinton campaign that he mentions in the title.  I, and my friends who are helping, are the main ones doing the pushback.  And thus far we have not had any help from the Clinton campaign.

And if you look at what he says, Jake Tapper says we "Clinton Allies" are making up the "false" pushback.  When I posted to that very same thread and challenged Tapper's version of what happened, mentioning Kendrick Meek, Tapper, or someone at ABC, erased my comment.  If he has the truth on his side, why erase my comment?

And if you look at Tapper's credibility on this whole story, you will see that he has written post after post trying to stir the pot on this.  Why is he so obsessed with pushing it against the Clintons?  Doesn't that seem a little odd?

Ask Seymour Glass about Tapper.  He knows him personally.

Re: Kendrick Meek contradicts media on (none / 0)

Well, I know none of these people, and I can't explain your experience of posting there, anecdotal as it may be.  Are you suggesting that this transcript is false?   I had not considered that, frankly.  Are there not other witnesses to the exchange who would come forward in that event?  Tapper's entire career would be on the line, would it not, over this incident if what you say is true?  Why would he risk that?  What level of conspiracy in the media would that imply?  Why would Bill Clinton not have pointed this out himself, he would be a profoundly injured party in that case?  Surely there are credible answers to these questions.

Occam's razor suggests that the most likely explanation to these questions should be, at least, considered.

Kendrick Meek, who was there, said there was a question about historical black candidates before the part of the video we have all seen.  That isn't in the transcript.  So maybe the transcript is wrong?

Re: Kendrick Meek contradicts media on (none / 0)

Do you have any more substantial evidence of this than a comment in the thread at TPM?  I followed your links and found the comment you cited but what other evidence is there?  Is there a first-hand account from Meek himself you could provide a link for?  The clip of him giving this account, for example?

Re: Kendrick Meek contradicts media on (none / 0)

There were two references to the Meek comment, both saying that he said that there was a question about historical black candidates. One in my previous diary here and one in my dKos diary.  Meek's DC office confirmed that he was on MSNBC today with Chris Jansing at 2pm eastern.  It took two calls to the office to get that much info.  I am looking for either video of that and/or a transcript.

MSNBC lags a day behind in transcripts.  I asked Meek's office if they had video of his interview and they said no.  I will try again tomorrow when I am rested.  I was really hoping someone might have tivoed it and I could get it that way.  That's why I posted it to the monster audience at dKos.  But there were too many jackasses and not enough friendly helpers there and that proved a pain in the backside rather than a help.

Re: Kendrick Meek contradicts media on (none / 0)

The people who called you and Meek liars, are crazed Obama zombies who have lost their minds.

Having said that, Kendrick Meek (who I respect) is unfortunately mistaken; but for those of us who've been around a while, we know Jake Tapper was part of the GOP smear campaign against the Clintons in the 90s, competing head to head with Matt Drudge for the most scurrilous screed of the day.

Josh Marshall has twisted the content of what Clinton said in order to shill for Obama, which is his obsession these days, as he turns TPM into HuffPo.

When you read Tapper's transcript, watch TPM's video segment, and then read the article that the New York Times linked to today from MSNBC reporter Mike Menoli, you see that Meek was wrong about the particular question the reporter asked Clinton just before the Jackson comment.

What Bill Clinton was responding to was David Wright's provocative question about it taking "two people" to compete against Obama.

Clinton disputed the premise of the question, saying that the reporter was trying to "bait" him; and then Clinton tried to illustrate it by pointing out that Jesse Jackson won in '84 and '88". There was nothing offensive about it, intentionally or otherwise.

If you know what's said you can hear it more clearly on the video. Everyone seems to miss the key point in the question, and focused instead on perceiving that Clinton somehow trivialized Obama's win using Jackson. I don't read it that way at all, having read the transcript and seen the video. It's been blown out of all proportion.

Here's the quote on the video of the question and the answer:

David Wright:  What does it say about Barack Obama that it takes two of you to beat him?
BC:  [Laughs] That's just bait, too. Jesse Jackson won South Carolina twice, in `84 and `88. And he ran a good campaign, and Senator Obama's run a good campaign here.  He's run a good campaign everywhere, he's got a, he is a good candidate, with a good organization.

Sources:

Jake Tapper at ABC completely distorted what the debate was about when he said, no reporters brought up Jackson. That was never the point in the first place--set up straw man; knock it down:

Some supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, are inaccurately saying that her husband's comparison of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, to Rev. Jesse Jackson came only because a reporter had asked the former president whether a black candidate can win South Carolina, thus raising the subject.

The larger charge is that reporters were falsely painting the president as race-baiting.

It's not true. Clinton brought up Jackson with no mention of Jackson by reporters, and with no mention of the subject of whether an African-American can win by reporters.

Here's the whole transcript:

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/ 2008/01/false-pushback.html

And, the story that the New York Times linked to today in the story on Jackson/Obama:

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
COLUMBIA, SC --

"My message has been 99.9% positive for 100% of this campaign," Clinton said to reporters later. "I think that when I think she's being misrepresented, I have a right to try to with factual accuracy set the record straight, which is what I've tried to do."

A number of prominent Barack Obama supporters and neutral observers have criticized Clinton's vocal role on his wife's behalf. John Kerry told National Journal that "being an ex-president does not give you license to abuse the truth."

"Did you notice he didn't specify?" Clinton said when asked about the comment. "They never do. They hurl these charges, but nothing gets specified. I'm not taking the bait today. I did what I could to help Senator Kerry every time he needed me, and every time he asked me. He can support whomever he wants for whatever reason he wants. But there's nothing for me to respond to."

Another reporter asked what it said about Obama that it "took two people to beat him." Clinton again passed. "That's just bait, too. Jesse Jackson won South Carolina twice, in '84 and '88. And he ran a good campaign. Senator Obama's run a good campaign here, he's run a good campaign everywhere."

Re: Kendrick Meek contradicts media on (none / 0)

He clearly says he was there and, referring to Bill, that 'he was asked a question about historic voting in the state of South Carolina.'  The interviewer qualifies this and he confirms.  There are no other specifics, however, and it was pretty clearly offered in the context of a 'damage control' message about Bill's bad framing in the press generally.  Seems pretty thin to me, you really hanging your hat on this one?  I don't think it is going to fly, but thanks for the clip and your assertion that he pushed back on that comment is certainly true.  I'm not sure I actually see a compelling case for doubting Tapper's transcript, however.  Seems more like a positive spin attempt to me, but keep digging and see if you can find something a bit more forensic.  And good luck.  I would be happy to know the outcome.

Re: Kendrick Meek contradicts media on Bill Clinto (none / 0)

It's strange that Meeks would bring it up, when no one except those who read about it yesterday in the comment section at Political Punch would even know there was a question asked before the one shown in the video.

If you listen to Bill's answer to the question shown on the video, it makes no sense. When you consider it was first asked "Can Barack Obama win as a Black candidate" it makes perfect sense why he would say

"Well, that's just bait, too. Jesse Jackson won South Caroline in '84 and '88..."

If it turns out Jake Tapper of ABC News/Political Punch deleted info from the transcript, I'd say that's pretty huge.

Video of Congressman Meeks on CNN (2.00 / 2)

I heard he was on MSNBC but when I searched for the relevant clip, it turned up on CNN. He does indeed say he was there with Bill Clinton and says he was asked a question about historic voting in South Carolina.

Unfortunately, you have to get through the ads before the piece starts. Only a few seconds, though.

Holy shit.

"The real issue is the reporting of what the president is actually saying....its the 'clip and snip'..." He said he was there, provided details and said there was a question about historic voting in SC that was left out of the clip.

Again, holy shit.

Yes! Good find! I saw Kendrick Meek on MSNBC today, and clearly this clip is from CNN, but he said the same thing during his MSNBC interview.

take it as a good sign that Meek is making the rounds on the TeeVee...it means they know whats up.

i left my own comment there (none / 0)

they deleted jen's....lets see if they delete mine. if so, here it is:

"You can delete our comments all you like, but that doesn't make it go away. The Clinton campaign is on this already.

A US Congressman, Kendrick Meek, who was with Clinton when these questions were asked is on record on national tv saying that there was a 'clip and snip' job here to make Clinton look bad. A question about historic voting in SC was asked but conveniently left out.

The truth is coming out whether you like it or not."

That's OK.  The game is afoot now that we have video.  I may not go to bed after all tonight.  LOL

Re: UPDATE (none / 0)

Unbelievable huh.

If Meek is out there making the rounds, specifically bringing this up, it's got to mean that the Clintons know what happened and are pushing back.

Again, holy shit.

Good work (none / 0)

I did my share of emails last night about this...I have no idea what sort of difference it made, but who knows. When I saw Jake's update with the full transcript, i pretty much said "thats that". But now that Rep Meek has apparently chimed in, I have to wonder if there really is more to this. Jake almost seemed strangely defensive. But who knows. We just really need to see the whole video or, barring that, confirmation from Rep Meek.

You can't post anything pro-Hillary or anti-Obama on DailyKos without being flamed to the Nth degree. Don't let that bother you....they are foaming at the mouth haters over there now. Its pretty sad....I used to adore that site. I posted my recommended diary "Obama's whining strategy" over there and it was treated as a troll diary! So I feel ya.

I don't know. Maybe the provided transcript is correct. But something is tugging at me that says it might not be.

Let me know what I can do to help you get to the bottom of this.

Re: Kendrick Meek contradicts media on (none / 0)

One thing I found interesting and I don't know if it's true or not, but my husband said when the story ran, there was a timeline or clock displayed to show when the recording took place. The first thing I thought was they pieced it together for "gotcha". I mean Bill should know better. He was actually saying 'hey, you're trying to bait me .. here let me help you out ..'
