look what Republicans have waiting for Obama in 5 states already

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/article s/2008/01/the_battle_over_mocri.html

"""Come November, voters will decide more than half a million federal, state and local officeholders and ballot initiatives. Ninety-nine of these decisions will matter less than will the five civil rights initiatives that might be on the ballots in Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Missouri.

If the initiatives qualify for those states' ballots, all probably will pass. But the initiatives must surmount ferocious opposition from defenders of racial preferences, such as the politicians who administer and benefit from Missouri's racial spoils system. The crux of the Missouri Civil Rights Initiative (MoCRI) would amend that state's Constitution to say: "The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education or public contracting."

Similar language has been approved by voters in California (in 1996), Washington state (1998) and Michigan (2006). California's initiative passed 55 percent to 45 percent even though opponents outspent supporters 13-1. Washington's initiative won 58-42 against 10-1 spending. Michigan's initiative won 58-42 although supporters were outspent 5-1. Those spending disparities understate the initiatives' disadvantages because in each state, opponents were assisted by the "diversity" industry that administers racial preferences in the public and private sectors. """

Obama strongly supports Affirmative Action

Now I generally support Affirmative Action as a way to expand opportunities to everyone and so does Hillary Clinton.

The point of this dairy is to give examples of how this country will not be united by anyone. This is politics. It is war without bloodshed.  The alternative is bloodshed, see other countries.

Obama supporters please grow up! and vote Hillary.

So Hillary doesn't support affirmative action? (1.33 / 3)

In fact, I'd be willing to bet she received more help from AA than Obama.

Obama graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard Law and went on to lecture at U of Chicago.

Hillary failed the DC Bar, then followed Bill back to U of Arkansas.

hello? (none / 0)

I say in the diary, that I and Hillary both support Affirmative Action.

The point is the idea that the country is going to come together, red state and blue state, lib, mod, cons, black and white, etc. is not going to happen.

Jesse Jackson and others will fight these ballot initiatives, leading the media to ask which side obama is on, which leads to a campaign against him based on race.

I'm trying to wake the obama crowd up to reality of the fight that's coming from like 10 different fronts.

No, you're using the presence of a fight "that's coming from 10 different fronts" as a reason to vote for Hillary, who's less vulnerable because she's white.

That's not a warning, it's a surrender.  You're advocating that we shy away from a fight over racism.  I can not, and I will not.  Racism must be confronted, and racism must be defeated.  I am not afraid of this fight.

Re: hello? (none / 0)

Do you think nominating Obama will defeat racism? You are truly naive if you do. When Obama goes down in the g.e. we aren't even going to have a discussion about racism. He's a win win because of his inexperience. Or Rezko or lots of other excuses people can come up with for not voting for him besides race.

No longer a Democrat, now proudly an independent voter!

Re: hello? (none / 0)

No, I don't think nominating Obama will defeat racism.  But I definitely do not believe that voting against Obama out of fear of racists will do anything to promote the progressive agenda.  You don't weaken prejudice by surrendering to it.  You don't win a battle by cowering in retreat.

And no, I don't actually think this is a legitimate argument for voting Obama.  I certainly don't support him because of his skin color.  But it dismays me, no matter what the logic, that some progressives would actually use this as a reason to vote against him.  That is inexcusable.

Defeated before the fights even begun. (none / 0)

It certainly won't happen if everyone thinks like you. Ever heard the term 'self-fulfilling prophecy?'

Obama isn't saying that everyone will join hands in a love fest where the lion lays down with the lamb and butterflies will never die... he IS saying we can do alot better than we have been, and he's right.

I didn't file these 5 iniatives (none / 0)

they are going to happen whether hillary or obama wins.

they will be big racial fights in those states.

the republicans will take the fight national.

the idea of someone saying,"i want 1 america" and the republicans saying ok "support our CIVIL RIGHTS INITIATIVE" then."It promotes a united America".

This is politics, not dreamland.  The  other side has won the presidency for all but 8 years over a generation.

we have a guy talking like this is a high school election, rather than people playing for big stakes.

Re: look what Republicans have waiting for Obama i (none / 0)

no more diaries today.

oh and just so you know, the reason that the republicans do these ballot initiatives is to increase republican TURNOUT. it would have the exact same effect on either candidate in the general.

that's the point (none / 0)

this election is going to be republican vs democrat.

You can't transform the election and transcend party, etc.

thank you for making my point

you have no point. GOP turnout methods mean nothing in deciding the democratic primary.

Re: look what Republicans have waiting for Obama i (none / 0)

Republicans are smart like that. Democrats are dumb like saying that American Samoa's votes count, but critical large swing state Florida's don't.

Hmm (2.00 / 1)

I am an Edwards supporter who finds this line to be a little annoying...

"Obama supporters please grow up! and vote Hillary."

All three candidates have pluses and minuses. All three candidates would do much better if one of the other candidates dropped out.

I still feel that Edwards is the best choice. This is the year of "differences" not necessarily change. Edwards, who I feel is the best candidate, is going up against the first viable black candidate and the first viable woman candidate. This does not mean they are not good candidates but it does make it much harder for the white male.

So... back to what you stated above. I could easily say the same to both of the Obama and Hillary supporters but to have them vote for Edwards.

This is a much different election year. It is frustrating, fun and just plain crazy.

Update on my comment (none / 0)

I take this from another comment I made...

...

People are listening to and like Edwards message but this is a much different race.

I have seen here, at Dkos and many other places where people went to Obama yesterday and in recent weeks because they don't want Hillary and feel they must stop her.

I personally think this is silly, but it is the truth. Now if they would only vote for what they really feel and not vote polls and where the media leads them, then this could be a much different race.
