Wynn-Lit Pt.3 - His Corporateness goes for the Progressive Warrior* look (*risk-free, natch...)

Cross-posted from Free State Politics; also posted over at Open Left. Edited from the original.

I haven't received any campaign literature from my Congressman for awhile (first one received Feb-2007 and second one received Jul-2007), so was slightly taken aback to find something from him in my mailbox (rec'd Thursday 17Jan.). And while doing the scanning, image uploading, and editing for this post on that mailer, I received yet another mailer the next day, pretty much on the same theme (I hope to post that one later, in the interest of completeness if nothing else). We'll see what Saturday's mail brings, to see if Mr. Wynn went for the threepeat.

As for Thursday's mailer - it was a single 8.5" x 11" semigloss sheet, card stock (I believe that's the term), printed on front and back. Thumbnail links to scanned images are provided after the jump, but below are descriptions of the basic contents.

FRONT: Heading the page, in large fonts, a statement that "32,360 Support Congressman Wynn's effort to IMPEACH CHENEY", followed by one of the many readily available unflatttering head shots of CrashCart, and some more subdued text in the background concerning Halliburton-related malfeasance. "IRAQ" in large red font is also printed on the front, as a single lonely noun, with no context provided (not that any is needed, though).

BACK: At the top is the statement "Our Quickest Path Out of IRAQ is With Albert Wynn", followed by a photo of a hand touching names on the Vietnam War Memorial, and an invitation to "Support HR 333, Congressman Wynn's Effort to Impeach Vice President Cheney." After that come a number of statements (bullet items in two columns, basically), mostly related to the need to get out of Iraq, hold the Administration to account, and direct money from warfighting to domestic needs.

As promised, images after the jump, along with some commentary...

With this mailer and the one received the next day, Mr. Wynn is obviously going after the votes of MD-04 Democrats strongly opposed to the Iraq misadventure. I haven't seen polling which would indicate whether this could help more in MoCo or PG county, or whether it's a big plus in both regions. He clearly feels that it's a useful political strategy; I like to think that he feels truly contrite about his early, unquestioning support for getting us in this vicious, deadly, and entirely unnecessary mess - only Mr. Wynn himself can say what's in his own heart and mind. Perhaps that Feb-2007 mailer (linked up top), sent out so soon after his close 2006 election win over Ms. Edwards, offers some clue - I have no idea, but do remember thinking (at the time it showed up in the mail) that mailer was kind of a strange thing. It could have simply been political pre-positioning, prompted by a newfound sense of vulnerablility - regardless of how things turn out this year, Ms. Edwards is owed a debt of gratitude by all of us in MD-04, for delivering a much-needed humbling of Mr. Wynn in 2006.

It's also interesting to ponder whether Mr. Wynn would be campaigning in this manner if he shared the same corporate pals with Mr. Cheney, whose current buddies appear to be in the defense sector, AFAICT* - Mr. Wynn's corporate benefactors are in the energy/natural resources, and financial/insurance/real estate sectors, according to this site. So in calling for Mr. Cheney's impeachment, and presenting himself as the guy who can get us out of Iraq, Mr. Wynn is not really exhibiting any political courage - for the most part, neither his MD-04 constituents nor his corporate contributors/beneficiaries are likely to be offended by these stances, which to the casual observer might seem like gutsy positions to take.

Finally, here's a brief description of the mailer received the next day (Friday 18Jan), since I don't know when I'll get around to scanning/uploading it. It is of a fold-out (quadri-fold) design, taped at the edges in its as-received form, and roughly postcard sized in this folded-up form (4"x6"). It has a semi-glossy finish, plum red in color (non-text paper color), and is standard grade paper (i.e., not card stock). It unfolded lengthwise into 4 sections, showing a timeline for the Iraq war, starting in 2003 (one year per section), with key events highlighted, and a smaller concurrent timeline near the bottom edge showing U.S. fatalities. I have no expertise in these matters, but IMHO it's a well designed mailer, that drives the point home that this war has been a deadly affair built on lies and delusions. Then again, for thinking people, this is not news at this point.

NOTE: Just before posting this diary, I saw on the FSP homepage Eric Luedtke's post about the recent PBS NOW show which included discussion of the MD-04 Congressional race (go here to read about it on PBS' website). According to Eric, they really hashed up the analysis of the Edwards-Wynn race. That is very unfortunate, especially given what is at stake in races like this.

*AFAICT = as far as I can tell; IM(H)O = in my (humble) opinion
