Matthews: "It's not obsession." Really?

Sen. Hillary Clinton: "I don't know what to do with men who are obsessed with me. I honestly have never understood it."

[...]

Chris Matthews: "It's not obsession."

If you have ever watched an episode of Hardball on MSNBC, you may find Chris Matthews' above statement a bit suspect...

CrossPosted at DailyKos and OpenLeft

After all, as Media Matters for America has previously documented, after The New York Times published an article on Hillary and Bill Clinton's marriage in May of 2006, Matthews asked at least 90 questions on the subject over the course of seven broadcasts on his two programs (Hardball and The Chris Matthews Show). One of his guests during these broadcasts, Washington Post reporter Lois Romano, called Matthews out after he repeatedly inquired about how many days the Clintons slept under the same roof. "[W]hat is your obsession with logistics here?" she asked.

To get an idea of the type of language Matthews regularly uses when covering Clinton, take a look at this sampling:

  • "I hate her. I hate her. All that she stands for."

  • "She Devil"

  • "Nurse Ratched"

  • "Madame Defarge"

  • "Witchy"

  • "Anti-male"

  • "[U]ppity"

  • "She's going to tell us what to do."

  • "Her scolding manner in terms of her public speaking"

  • "[L]et's talk about the troops ...Will they take the orders?"

  • "[D]oesn't she know she looks like a fraud?"

  • "Look at those eyes. Look at the cold eyes that she's giving him. Look at that cold look."

  • "[L]ike a strip-teaser saying she's flattered by the all the attention"

  • On Sen. Clinton's endorsers: "castratos in the eunuch chorus"

  • "Let me tell you how short Hillary's leash is."

  • "Is she a convincing mom?"

  • On Sen. Clinton's laugh: "What do you make of the cackle?"

  • "[S]he's clapping, like she's Chinese. I know the Chinese clap at each other, but what is she clapping at? I mean, it's like one of these wind-up things."

  • "[S]he was giving a campaign barn-burner speech, which is harder to give for a woman; it can grate on some men when they listen to it -- fingernails on a blackboard, perhaps."

  • "Is there, out there in the country or out in the Atlantic Ocean, some gigantic monster -- big, green, horny-headed, all kinds of horns coming out, big, aggressive monster of anti-Hillaryism that hasn't shown itself: it's based upon gender ..."

  • "[B]eing surrounded by women, does that make a case for commander in chief -- or does it make a case against it?"

  • "Is she hemmed in by the fact that she's a woman and can't admit a mistake, or else the Republicans will say, `Oh, that's a woman's prerogative to change her mind,' or `another fickle woman'? Is her gender a problem in her ability to change her mind?"

  • "[T]he reason she's a U.S. senator, the reason she's a candidate for president, the reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around."

  • "She may have gotten The Des Moines Register's endorsement the other day, thanks to her husband's lobbying with its female editors and publisher ..."
  • She may take the brunt of his vitriol and sexist commentary, but Clinton is far from the only woman targeted by Matthews. Here are some other notable examples:

    On House Speaker Nancy Pelosi:

  • Described her as "scary"

  • Suggested she would "castrate" House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer

  • Wondered how she could disagree with President Bush "without screaming? How does she do it without becoming grating?"

  • On Michelle Obama during the first Democratic presidential debate:
  • "I thought Michelle, whatever you say about Obama, his wife looked perfect -- perfect for the occasion ... I'm sorry, those things are important. You guys are ignoring it. Some people are, by the way, just watching tonight. They stopped listening a half-hour in, and they noticed how pretty she is -- Michelle -- and they said, `I like the fact he's got this pretty wife. He's happily married. I like that.' " After Matthews' take on Michelle Obama's appearance, NBC News chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell was compelled to remind Matthews that Mrs. Obama is a Harvard-educated lawyer.

  • On potential future female presidential candidates:
  • "[T]here's not even another on the horizon. Where are the governors? Where are the big-state women governors? Where are they? Name one. They don't exist." (Note: Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire, Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell, and Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius all run states with populations comparable to male governors who have recently run for president, including Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and Bill Richardson.)

  • On women who live in the suburbs who "may not work outside the home":
  • "They're talking around election time -- the husband and the wife -- you know, she says, `I sort of like this Hillary, the first woman president. She's pro-choice.' And the husband says, `You know, dear, you know, this is going to kill our tax bracket. You know that tuition thing we pay every couple of years for the kids, every year, we can't do that if we get a higher tax bracket. We have to pay more money.' "

  • On right-wing radio talk show host Laura Ingraham:
  • "I get in trouble for this, but you're great looking, obviously. You're one of the gods' gifts to men in this country. But also, you are a hell of a writer."

  • On CNBC anchor Erin Burnett:
  • "Come on in closer. No, come in -- come in further -- come in closer. Really close ... No, you're beautiful. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. You're a knockout. Anyway, thank you, Erin Burnett ... It's all right getting bad news from you, even, OK?"

  • Matthews' clearly misogynistic commentary has landed him in the middle of a grassroots firestorm. Over the weekend the Associated Press ran this piece, which has appeared in more than 60 papers around the country, and we at Media Matters have been following the amazing work the blogosphere has done in bringing his comments to the public at large.

It's crucial for us to keep pressure on Matthews and MSNBC. Please take a moment to write a post on your blog, tell your friends and neighbors, and contact MSNBC and Chris Matthews today. Tell them what you think about this kind of sexist commentary polluting the airwaves.

    Yes, David Brock's doing a terrific job... (2.00 / 3)

In exposing Chris Matthews and his fellow big media pundits as the sexist right-wing tools that they really are. They're being exposed for their misogynistic attacks on Hillary Clinton, and they're being revealed for their sexist bias against other great Democratic women. I hope more people pay attention to all this vitriol, and they take action to stop it.

    Matthews is becoming deranged. (2.00 / 3)

His program is one long rant against Clinton but then that seems to be the attitude of the entire NBC network.

It's so difficult to even watch Matthews... (2.00 / 1)

These days. He really is a right-wing tool, and he shows his own sexism problem every time he spews crap at Hillary. I've heard rumors that Air America host Rachel Maddow might be joining MSNBC soon... I hope they replace Matthews with her.

That would be great news - I really like her.  She's smart, funny, and she doesn't always push her own agenda like some of the pundits.

As an Obama supporter, I agree 100%! Matthews is a disgusting misogenist and ought to be booted off the air. I don't give a crap whether or not he likes my candidate! Matthews is a gasbag, and my only consolation in seeing Obama lose New Hampshire was seeing Matthews look like a fool.

We need more progressives like you.  This kind of behavior by the media is unacceptable whether or not it happens to favor our preferred candidate at a particular moment in time.

Back when progressives favored Bill Bradley, we stood by silently as the media trashed Al Gore with false stories time and time again.  It was all fun and games until that same behavior by the media put George Bush in the White House.  It's very important for us to learn the right lessons from that experience.

Thank you.  I don't care if someone despises Hillary - if we tolerate these sort of sexist attacks, it becomes accepted and okay to do it.  Then the next time it will be a female candidate whom you DO like that they are treating shamefully.

    It's wrong, period.

    Matthews is Harmless (1.00 / 0)

    And good for a laugh.

Maybe he's said so many negative things about Hillary because there are more negative facts about her than positive :)

    Re: Matthews is Harmless (2.00 / 1)

    Good for a LAUGH?

would you say that about someone who went after an AA senator with racist attacks in the same way Matthews has attacked Hillary.

Seriously - look at what happened to Imus.

OMFG!  I'm amazed at the lengths people will go to to excuse this sort of garbage simply because someone attacks Hillary.

Cop yourself on to the hate and the double standards already - they might go after you or someone you believe in next if we refuse to take a stand now.

I disagree, Matthews may be dumb, but he's not harmless.

All hate speech is harmful -- it's part of the Republican divide and conquer strategy, preaching intolerance.

So how is it harmless, when Matthews is part of the Greek chorus, part of a concerted media effort to sway the public against progress, and difference?

Re: Matthews is Harmless (none / 0)

of course it is harmful.  If you go to the person's diary just above this one you will see that he/she is a recent college grad with a poli-sci degree.  I'd say the person has a lot to learn.

Re: Matthews is Harmless (none / 0)

Actually, I was thinking people like Matthews, and those who would disingenuously spread the republican hate agenda, should be marginalized, shunned, as social outcasts. They arent interested in compromise, they're interested in stringing people along, until they feel they have achieved some sort of false victory.

And even though the democrats have "owned" the race issue, the republicans will still push more divisive substance.

We should stop recognizing the Limbaughs and the Matthews as legitimate -- they're not.

Mathews diatribes against Al Gore, his glorification of GWB (see his "Mission Accomplished" reaction) have been complicit to the untold harm done to this nation in the immediate past, present and future.

Matthews Needs To Go NOW (none / 0)

I can't thank you enough for compiling & posting this information David.  Matthews is worse than any "shock jock" out there.  The comments you've posted here are disgusting and have no business going out over our airwaves.

And make no mistake folks... for NBC this is ALL about business.

So let's hammer away at their bottom line - make it clear we'll boycott their business and that of anyone who advertises on their shows.

Matthews needs to be taken off the air - NOW!

    Hi David,

Great diary, thank you for making it so easy to act.  I am going to send this diary to all of my friends and family, we are all political and all democrats and we have been having a round robin email discussion.

Matthews is a misogynist and unfortunately he is part of the inside the beltway media who gets to help write the media story-line.

I've been watching old tapes; unbelievable (none / 0)

My dad had his DVD recorder set to tape Hardball the past several weeks. Watching them one after another the past few nights has been surreal. Matthews eclipses even his past standards of juvenile and pathetic. He acted like the tiger that escaped from San Francisco Zoo after Iowa, pouncing on Hillary with every opportunity and gleefully passing it around the panel for others to do the same, while he grinned incessantly. Then on NH night his face was pale and drawn and the decibel level was maybe 25% the norm, no energy whatsoever and the definition of stunned. I laughed like hell when he finally came around to acknowledging Hillary's triumph, and the only way he could do it was to say she had done something Bill Clinton could not do, win New Hampshire.

In regard to Hillary, Matthews reminds me of someone who hates his neighbors, and is allowed a daily network TV show to rile against them. "And  have I mentioned how bad they smell?..."

The first time I looked up Matthews on the internet more than half a decade ago, someone had summarized him as "strictly junior high." More evidence that everything tends to drift back to the beginning. In a current article he was compared to a 7th grader who despised a girl in his class and couldn't stop scrambling for ways to ridicule her.

    Re: Matthews: "It's not... (none / 0)

For once I have to agree with the Clintonites.  Matthews is a complete sexist pig who shouldnt be allowed anywhere near a microphone.  Frankly, if he said things about Obama of the nature that he has about HRC, he would have been fired long ago.

Dont get me wrong, I have repeatedly decried the progressives in the media for not reacting stronger against HRC's race-baiting tactics.  I am appalled by the lack of response.  But in all fairness, at least with african americans the kind of blatant, obvious racism on the level of the sexism displayed by Matthews would get a pundit fired. He should have got his ass canned long ago.
