Dodd Leads on Iraq

Bumped - Todd

Chris Dodd on the proposed supplemental bill.

"Now is the time for Democrats to stand our ground, stick to our principles and fight for an end to this war. I know when to make a principled compromise and this ain't one of those times."

As a contrast Matt Browner-Hamlin of the Dodd blog also provided statements from Senators Clinton and Levin about the compromise.

Earlier this week Hillary Clinton said the following about compromising:

"You have to know when to stick to your principles and fight," she said, "and know when to make principled compromises."

Yesterday Carl Levin said the following about compromising on withdrawing from Iraq:

"If we have to make the spring part a goal, rather than something that is binding, and if that is able to produce some additional votes to get us over the filibuster, my own inclination would be to consider that."

Last year voters went to the polls and voted for change.  They elected a Congress whom they expected to end the war in Iraq.  Americans don't want non-binding goals.  It's well past time for a withdrawal of combat troops in Iraq and Senator Dodd is leading the charge.

Dodd's website has a page set up where you can contact your Senators and insist that they too stand up for a firm deadline.

Re: Dodd Leads on Iraq (none / 0)

Democrats do need to dig in more than they have the last few months, but I'm not about to call anyone and demand a firm deadline. As facts on the ground change, we need to be willing to change, too, so "firm" is the wrong word to use. I'd set a goal of a small window (a month or two about a year or two out) and say it's flexible, that we might stay an additional six months past that window (but likely no more). It's a dicey, complex situation that deserves a complex political answer.

Well, I certainly hope dailykos will endorse him since he's so 'bold' now. Come on...

Re: Kos is giving Hillary Clinton (none / 0)

They truth is Hillary does not need kos, but he needs Hillary's attention badly.

He's been trashing Hillary all year long. If he's really that principled, why doesn't he just go ahead and endorse Edwards, Dodd or Richardson? Why?

I don't want Hillary to cave in to kos. It's dangerous to take cue from him...

Re: No answer for that but I'm (none / 0)

She's not taking cues from him.  Look, maybe your a neocon, I don't know but Bush is simply staying put in Iraq because he wants to leave the hard work to the next president.  Every serious person knows this.  Kos will never be satisfied with Hillary.  Never.  She's doing what should be done to fill the immense leadership vaccuum in Washington left by the president.  Now unless you want someone else to fill that space I suggest you buck up.  I, for one, would like to see Bush piss or get off the pot.  If he doesn't want to get to work, he can just go the hell back to Crawford. Are you just blatantly unaware that Bush is running out the clock?

Re: No answer for that but I'm (none / 0)

George Bush is not going to leave Iraq, period. Kos has no power to make Bush change his mind, he is venting his own frustration towards Hillary, which is extremely unhealthy. He is a man, he needs to stand up on his own feet.

Clinton's support is broad, she is not a kos candidate and will never be.

I sincerely hope kos just go ahead and endorse whoever he wants go. He hates Hillary to the bone. It's probabaly part of his 'male dominating' blogsphere culture.

Re: No answer for that but I'm (2.00 / 1)

That's fine.  I agree that Kos will never support Hillary in the primary.  So what?  I'm more interested in her ratcheting up pressure on Bush.  I don't think Congress has handled this well.  I do think Hillary is handling this well, and I am interested to see what develops.  I agree there is almost no chance of Bush making a move to withdraw troops, but I don't get what you are suggesting.  How the hell does someone become president by not taking up Bush's failure to act?

One percent agree with this. I don't understand why Clinton pushing Bush is a bad thing.

Re: No answer for that but I'm (none / 0)

When did I say it's a bad thing?

Clinton should do whatever she believes necessary to push Bush to end the war in a responsible way.
She will not be led by dailykos. It's better for kos to stop playing his childish 'carrot-and-stick' game on Clinton or any other democratic candidates.

Oh, ok, I thought you objected to (none / 0)

her statement.  Did you read Alegre's diary the other day on the questions Hillary sent to Bush regarding the surge pre the Petraeus meeting(which will have been pre-sanitized by the WH)?  It's quite good.

you are adding a layer to this that's absolutely irrelevant. not everything is about partisan divides in the primaries.

Re: No answer for that but I'm (none / 0)

The fact is when votes were counted, kos was not even able to defeat Lieberman.

1/3 of CT democrats in a very blue state stuck with that hawk to the very end.

Dailykos exposed their deep vulnerability and flaw. They are just a bunch of elite white male.

What the hell does that have to do anything?  And, in case you forgot, Lieberman lost the primary.  You need to stop wedding any move Hillary makes toward accountability from this president to kissing Kos's ass.

as well as this one

is tolerated on this site with no response from the rating system available to us all.

As a Dodd supporter I will refrain from doing so because he is the subject of this post, but criminy, is this where comments are headed as we get closer to the primaries?

is taken so out of context.  She wasn't talkin g about Iraq at all.  Strange.

Re: Ah, that statement by Hillary (none / 0)

I agree to an extent.

Indeed, Kos was right to give Hillary some props though her statement needs to be better.

Where's Obama?

I can not believehe has said NOTHING!!!

Axelrod must go.

Well, I agree Axelrod sucks for Obama, but I also think Obama is not turning out to be the best candidate.

Re: Ah, that statement by Hillary (none / 0)

Sadly if he keeps this up I must agree. Its absolutely not okay for him to remain silent here. This isn't even my top issue, but its an important one. If he can't handle no brainers, how the hell is he going to handle the GOP. I can only hope he will wake up soon.
