Write a Letter to Obama

Now is the time for Sen. Obama to stand up against the war.  I have written him a letter and suggest you do as well.  Regardless of if you are supporting another candidate or not - He is our man in the Senate and we should call on him to stand up for what is right.  Here is my letter, please post yours on this thread.

Sen. Obama ('s campaign),

First let me thank you all for all the hard work you have done and will do in the coming months (and years) for our nation.  I recently took a group of grad-students up to NH and campaigned for the weekend, and am looking to come back up with more people on board next month.  Your campaign is so nice and the people of NH were great to talk with.  As you know, well, you stood up early at an anti-war protest to call this war for what it was - stupid.  Then you came to the U.S. Senate and gave the war a chance deciding this year that all hope was lost.

I wanted to suggest to the campaign that you do more than simply vote against the spending bill this fall - even Hillary does that.  But you do, what you did in 2002, and stand up at an anti-war rally against this war.  It is my belief that the first candidate to stand in front of several hundred thousand people in DC and protest this war will be the nominee.  This is a time for guts not speeches on the Senate floor or votes.  This is a time for you to stand with the anti-war movement.  You has been brave calling on people to challenge their Senators to vote against funding - and now you has the chance to capture a national audience and lead a protest to end this war (before your Presidency).  I also believe You should further consider a filibuster of the war-spending bill (President Bush's new 50 million) - your young guy and can take it.  We have the 40 votes to carry one, and I believe you are the man for the job.

My Brother just finished another tour with the army in Iraq. And, while I'll save the stories he shared, I will tell you that he and the hundred and forty thousand other men and women over there are heroes.  But they now need a hero, somebody they can place their hope behind - this is why your campaign raised more from active duty members than any other candidate.  Their blood is on our national hands and every time one of them is blown up, shot, or captured the responsibility not only falls on those who authorized and constructed this war but the ones who remained silent during it. They have, and I share, and expectation for you to be something different, a figure of change, a figure of hope, a figure of courage, their, and our, hero in these all so troubled time.

I hope that you will stand up in the coming days for what is right.

God Bless,
XXXXXX

Re: Write a Letter to Obama (none / 0)

He wont go to the big anti war rally in DC coming up because he doesnt want to be associated with Communists, its will effectively kill his campaign immediately.

The big ones are not bad, they are family events - it is the Awnser rallies that you have to be careful about

Re: Write a Letter to Obama (none / 0)

Don't you think that something is not right about voting against the bill when in the end the policy is not going to change.

Obama/Clinton clearly do not really want to vote against the bill , but due to the pressures of activists they are going to cast a vote which in good conscience they do not want to cast.

Biden is right.

Re: Write a Letter to Obama (none / 0)

Obama's words infer he wants direct pull-out...the policy will have to change with no money.  They are casting the right vote against this war, but the vote isn't enough - they can bring it to a close if Obama gives the anti-war movement a voice

Re: Write a Letter to Obama (none / 0)

I still go to the protest - but really wish they didn't pull in all the other stuff outside Iraq.  We need an anti-Iraq war movement and Obama could be that voice

How about the women? (none / 0)

are they also heroes?  Is their blood on our hands too?  I know you didn't mean to leave them out.

I hope your brother is okay and good luck with the letter.  Clinton has pledged to get the troops out of Iraq, has Obama?  I am sure he has, but I would be surprised if he does as you ask.  He seems to want to be seen as a blue dog.
Still it is a worthy effort and I hope it works.

Re: How about the women? (2.00 / 0)

well the letter I sent him didn't have women, but I updated.  As much as grad-schools beats into you 'inclusive' language you would think I would have it right by now.

Re: How about the women? (none / 0)

it's an easy mistake to make.  Women in war is a new concept, one none of us grew up with.

Re: Write a Letter to Obama (2.00 / 1)

I wonder if any of the candidates will attend any anti-war rallys. I recall when the war first started only a few would attend including Obama and Kuchinch. How about now? I hear them all calling for a pull out.

Re: Write a Letter to Obama (2.00 / 1)

Speeches don't mean jack squat.

It's all about the votes in the US Senate. To pull troops out of Iraq, there is going to have to be a compromise between Democrats and Republicans. You know...the kind of working across the aisle bi-partisan give and take that Obama claims is his specialty.

Welcome to the real world of politics and government.

Re: Write a Letter to Obama (2.00 / 1)

Seriously, the big anti-war rallies are not just about the Iraq war.  They are about ALL wars.  Obama has been talking somewhat like a hawk, what with "let's move the troops to the real battlefield in Afghanistan and Pakistan" and of the top 3 candidates he is probably the one with the most troops left in the region: In addition to all the troops he envisions leaving in Iraq for counter-terrorism purposes others would just be shuffled around to go strongly after Osama Bin Ladin at Pakistan border, rather than brought home.   Of all candidates (outside of Biden) Obama would probably be the least likely candidate for an actual anti-war rally (despite his contention that he would have or may have voted against the AUMF in 2002, had he been in the Senate at that time.)
