The 2008 internet-based standouts

Yesterday I was on a panel titled "Modern Campaigns" with Joe Trippi and Stephanie Cutter, moderated by Simon Rosenberg. I mostly talked about the difference between a modern run campaign and a traditional campaign, in terms of how the internet impacts the campaign. I'd meant to get into some 2008 examples, but we didn't get that far, so I'll post it here.

I put together this with Adam Conner and Jonathan Singer, of the most memorable/best practices, internet-based, impact moments of the 2008 campaign to date. Here's the list:

2008 Standouts from the Democratic campaigns:

  1. HRC Soprano video: High quality, not repurposed campaign ad.
  2. Dinner with Obama: Small donor focused, sorta like buying a lotto ticket.
  3. Dodd debate clock: Timing the candidates quantified tier's, free branding.
  4. Elizabeth vs Coulter: Taken from TV, across media to internet, both earned and word of mouth.
  5. Gravel videos: Existentialism finally makes it to a presidential campaign; notjust out of the box, but drowning/burning the box.
  6. Edwards reality TV: biggest missed potential.
  7. Obama's Walk For Change: national canvass.
  8. Edwards One Corps: Meetup for 2008.
  9. Dodd TV: broadcast of campaign staff, live simulcast, embeddable.
  10. Obama's social networking: my.barackobama.com, Facebook, Myspace growth.
  11. Richardson/Dodd's blogads: flash interactive.
  12. Obama's small donor concerts: Candidates counting people(donors) instead of total money, or email subscribers.

None of them are particularly policy-based, which is interesting, although that probably just means we missed something. The Edwards poverty tour comes to mind, though it's national blogger coverage was not extensive, it was an opportunity to have local bloggers take up the story (though I don't know whether that happened). I'm also wondering what a list of The Biggest Flops would look like?

I think the biggest impact internet event of the campaign was the "I'm So Pretty" YouTube video. It's been around for a while, first surfacing towards the end of the 2004 campaign. But, in just three mintues of video, it derailed the Edwards campaign.

Re: The 2008 internet-based standouts (none / 0)

It doesn't qualify, it wasn't done by any of the campaigns.

Oh I bet it was. That had Karl Rove all over it. Probably done by the 2004 Bush/Cheney campaign.

Re: The 2008 internet-based standouts (none / 0)

The republicans still don't know what the internet is. Karl Rove is an extremely traditional campaigner . If you look at the college republicans as traditional. He refined the electoral tricks he learned there until he could perform those tricks perfectly. And as those tricks were hugely effectively until 2006 he's never had the need to learn new ones.

If Rove was behind that video he would have made sure that the republicans were investing in the internet much more then they are now.

Re: The 2008 internet-based standouts (none / 0)

What about Hillary's 400 house parties for the last debate?  I believe she almost completely used the internet as a vehicle to drive that effort.  I thought that was a pretty good one.  She's doing the same with the LGBT supporters and the logo debate.  I think that is pretty smart way to use the to grow grassroots support.

Re: The 2008 internet-based standouts (none / 0)

That reminds me of Obama's house party thing in the first quarter, when they gave a livefeed all over the nation.  I don't remember how many they had watching... But it raised a LOT of money.

Re: The 2008 internet-based standouts (none / 0)

There were over 5,000 "Hope, Action, Change" houseparties hosted by Obama supporters in every state in the country on March 31.

(Full disclosure: I work for the Obama campaign in SC.)

It's not that new, just building off of Dean/ we were trying to point toward new things.

Re: The 2008 internet-based standouts (none / 0)

Oh, ok Jerome, thanks.  I didn't know that Dean had done it.  What I liked about Hil's approach is that she targets a certain segment of the public with them.  The first was women.  The second obviously is for people for the gay and lesbian community.

Dean was a real pioneer on this stuff.

Re: The 2008 internet-based standouts (none / 0)

This is about Democrats only?  Otherwise, how can a post titled "The 2008 internet-based standouts" not discuss Ron Paul?

For example, this.

And this.

Never mind.  I just saw the tag "Democratic nomination."  Sorry.

Stephanie Cutter .. (none / 0)

I think she was on F-cker(that's Tucker for anyone snark challenged).  She was using Republican talking points ... saying AGAG was a tempest in a teapot(I paraphrase).  What is with these supposed Democratic consultants?  Are they that brain dead?

Re: No Hair video? (none / 0)

Sorry, I don't think it was all that great, and the views were mainly driven from their email list. What I would like to see is an interview of barbers, cold call, ask how much it costs to fly them to X to cut politician x's hair. Really, they blew the tactical of this badly.

Re: The 2008 internet-based standouts (none / 0)

I would've though the whole song election by Clinton would've merited a mention as well.

And the I feel pretty video isn't done by a campaign. Just like Obama-Girl.

Over-played, and they flopped on how to list-generate, trying to make up by doubling the contest with email requirements, after they opened with out those requirements-- no consistnency.

You guys are awfully naive if you think Obama Girl was not done by the Obama campaign.

The girl said that her agent came to her to ask if she was interested.

I totally agree.  It's pretty obvious.

I'd add the following... (none / 0)

Great list, Jerome.

If I could make a nomination of my own, I'd tack on Edwards & Obama's use of text messaging.
