50 State Blog Roundup - Labor Day Weekend, 2007 Edition

From the diaries - Todd

This is going to be a long weekend, and there are lots of great stories from around the blogosphere to keep you busy.  In honor of the Labor Day holiday, we will start off with some posts about workers.  This week's roundup is brought to you by Mooncat of Left in Alabama.  If any blogs were accidentally left out, be assured that it's due to incompetence rather than malice.

Utah
In Utah, Tower mine co-owner Bob Murray has laid off 300 mine workers.  Wasatch Watcher's marshall has the story.  Way to celebrate Labor day, Mr. Murray!

Wisconsin
Uppity Wisconsin is looking at Fighting Bob Fest as a good opportunity for activists concerned about factory farms to get organized.

Georgia
MoreLights takes American Eagle to task for not using its money, power and influence to ensure the workers at its contractor's warehouse are treated fairly and justly.

More below the fold.

On Blogs and Media, Rights and Other Stuff

Colorado
Gunny Bob likes throwing the word Nazi around and calling liberal blogs hate groups.  It's time to push back.

Iowa
The biggest news out of Iowa is the striking down of the state's ban on gay marriage.  The case will be appealed to the state supreme court, but it's a start!

In Louisiana, Foster Campbell Goes On the Air ...

Congressman Steve Rothman exposes the false talking-points and explains why the SCHIP program is vital

New York
Inspired by the 50 State Blog Roundup, The Albany Project and Daily Gotham Started a New York Blog Roundup.

TXSharon smacks a professor upside the head at TexasChaos for insinuating that if oil companies can't drill in her backyard, the terrorists have won.

On Iraq

Arizona
Bobby Muller of Veterans for America challenges Arizona Senator John Kyl to really support our troops, by voting for the Tauscher Bill which would give them a fair deployment policy.

Colorado
Zappatero wonders where Colorado representatives will come down on the troop surge in Iraq.  Will they listen to their consciences or listen to the spin?

Indiana
Rep. Steve "Nuke 'em All" Buyer told Sen. Richard Lugar and the rest of the GOP to shut up and be quiet about the Iraq War. Blue Indiana questions whether Buyer has a leg to stand on when it comes to foreign relations.

Maine
Mike Nutter points out that Rep. Tom Allen and every member of the Maine delegation except Republican Susan Collins took a stand to end the war.  Way to keep the pressure on!

Pennsylvania
Rep. Jason Altmire expects Gen. Petraeus to recommend a timeline for reducing troops in Iraq.  phillydem hopes Altmire makes the connection between the billions spent in Iraq and the lack of money to help flood victims in his own district.

While aging politicians argue over the definition of "success" in a surge,  Fake Consultant at TexasKaos reminds us poignantly that young men and women are still being parted from their families.

On Holding Electeds Accountable

Connecticut
On the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, tparty gives Senator Chris Dodd kudos for working to get NOLA and the Gulf Coast back on track, but Connecticut's other Senator, Joe Lieberman, only gets a lump of coal.

Minnesota

A revised version of a state fair fan with some interesting information about Governor Pawlenty and his minion, Lt. Governor Carol Molnau.

Missouri
Activist judges are in the eye of the beholder.  Howard Beale says the Missouri governor will seek the help of an activist judge to overturn a recent court decision on campaign finance.

New Hampshire
In New Hampshire, Dean Barker wants to make sure waterboarding water carrier Sen. John Sununu does not get a free pass for supporting Alberto Gonzales long after most of us realized he might not be the right man for the job.

At Free State Politics, we considered the relevance of Open Left's Bush Dog campaign in the state of Maryland.

New Jersey
A Blue Jersey diarist questions Rep. Rob Andrews (D-1) apparent support for Chertoff as Attorney General, asking "Is Rob Andrews Serious?"

DocHoc thinks Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe should get busy hunting terrorists instead of doves.  Really now, doves are much easier for Republicans to find.

Ohio
Ohio's Blue Dog Reps Charlie Wilson (OH-6) and Zach Space (OH-18) are Wifflers

Virginia
At Raising Kaine, Rob outs another Republican flip-flopper.

West Virginia
Carnacki takes pity on Republican State Senator Vic Sprouse after he crashed his political future on the shoals of hypocrisy.

On Elections

Alabama
After an interview with Benjamin Lodmell, Mooncat thinks he is a very good challenger for Republican Jo Bonner in AL-04.

California
In California, David Dayen reports that Republicans are lining up to run against Congressman John Doolittle in the Republican primary.  How sad.

Illinois
PrairieStateBlue is trying to put together a questionnaire for Congressional candidates, do you have suggestions? Do you want to try it in your state or district?

Massachusetts
David says keep an eye on the MA-05 race.  Polling indicates this one is about to get interesting.

Montana
Vote by mail looks to be increasing turnout in a Missoula city election.  Jay Stevens has the story.

New Mexico
In New Mexico, prominent local progressive blogs back begun the Beat Back Bush campaign to help defeat Republican members of Congress in President Bush's pocket.

Two North Carolina Democratic stars are going at it for the gubernatorial nomination.  Anglico has the story, but wishes one of them would enter the Senate race instead.

On Republicans

Florida Politics counts the ways the GOP has not been good to Florida.  Of course, the possible loss of presidential delegates to the party conventions is another one.

Georgia
Saxby Chambliss goes to Vietnam - 30 years too late.

Michigan
Wingnut group wants to recall Michigan legislators.. they're threatening a recall before the tax vote even happens.

Texas
The Texas GOP straw poll Sept 1 is looking very lonely, reflecting the party's declining importance.

Vermont
Last, but definitely not least, in Class Warfare - Making Sure That The Wealthy Get Their Share and Yours Too, bobhiggins dissects an email from the Heritage Foundation.  This is a must read!

I love these 50 state round ups but... (none / 0)

What about MY state?

Here are just a few:

Entirely my fault. (2.00 / 1)

Somehow I skipped over Washington and apparently no one submitted anything either.  Your state gets an extra mention next time I do the Roundup.

Another state that was missed is Mississippi, which is on the state blog list at MyDD, but not the one at Open Left -- that's the one I used.  Anyway, Mississippi has a fine blog in Cotton Mouth, so I'll mention their guest post on the Dwell Time Bill for U.S. Troops, plus a rain check.

Question for 50 state blog gurus:  Why are the state blog lists different, and is there an "official list?"

You missed us, too: http://blog.showmeprogress.com.

We're on the state blog list at MyDD and BlogPAC, but not at Open Left. Go figure.

Darn!  When I was looking for a Missouri story it struck me that you hadn't written anything this week and your blog looked different.  You get a rain check for double coverage in the future, and I'm obviously going to have to do this again.  Better next time.

Nebraska as well - also not on Open Left's list. (Maybe they should update?)

Re: Entirely my fault. (none / 0)

It's pretty annoying. I wrote Bowers about it, with no response. I didn't have to ask anyone to put us on the MyDD and BlogPAC lists; I think Laura Packard did that all on her own initiative.

Re: I love these 50 state round ups but... (2.00 / 1)

It would be fantastic if we focus only on state by state polls instead of national polls both for the primaries and the generals. The only place where the national polls are valid is in generic question for the control of House of Reps. Otherwise, conducting national polls is a sheer waster of money.
