Warner To Retire? Craig To Resign? So "GOP Officials" Say

They talk a lot.

"Republican officials" say Warner will announce his retirement today.

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., is expected to announce today that he will not seek re-election, Republican officials said Thursday.

According to GOP campaign and congressional sources, the 80-year-old Warner has informed them he will retire when his fifth term ends at the end of next year.

So is it confirmed? Not quite yet.

Political analysts, however, cautioned that Warner may not come to a final decision until he steps up to the microphone at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he is scheduled to appear at 2 p.m.

And as for Craig, it looks as though his resignation could be imminent.

Several well-placed GOP sources in Washington and Idaho have told CNN that embattled Republican Sen. Larry Craig is likely to resign soon, possibly as early as Friday.

[...]

GOP sources with knowledge of the situation told CNN's Dana Bash that the Republican National Committee was poised to take the extraordinary step of calling on Craig to resign but held off.

The RNC put the move on hold, the sources said, because top party leaders have received indications that Craig himself is preparing to step down.

Craig's resignation wouldn't be terribly surprising after yesterday's release of his arrest tape and a growing chorus of GOP senators, including NRSC chair John Ensign, for Craig to consider stepping aside.

So much for a sleepy Friday before Labor Day.

With Johnson and Warner announcing their intentions, guess that leaves Hagel.    . .  . and maybe Cochran (doubt it).

Anyone know when we get a re-election announcement out of him (Hagel)?

Re: Re-election (none / 0)

Hagel is retiring.  If he isn't he will be put out in a bloody primary.  I doubt he cares much for his future as a US Senator anymore after this term.

No idea on a "when" announcement though.

Re: Re-election (none / 0)

Cochran already announced that he runs for reelection, when Pickering announced his retirement.

Re: Warner To Retire? Craig To Resign? (none / 0)

A Craig resignation means that Gov. Otter(R) gets to appoint a replacement.  Whoever it will be will certainly run for the full term, and will almost certainly have the edge over ex-Rep. Larry LaRocco(D).  From a political standpoint, we would have been better off if this news came out next year, when it would have been too late to replace Craig except at the ballot box.

Even so, any representative who has pled guilty to a crime out to resign from office.

And who knows, maybe Otter will appoint Sali. ;-)

Re: Warner To Retire? Craig To Resign? (none / 0)

After listening to the tape and Craigs repeated denials on the tape, I can't believe he was that stupid to plead guilty.  Someone gave him some really bad advice here... otherwise, based on what the tape said and if craig stuck to his story, I would bet that he would have won out in court.  It doesn't sound liek there was any hard evidence... like he stuck his penis under the stall or tried to get into the officers stall.... just the toe tap, and the questionable hand gesture/picking up the paper.  A good lawyer should have been able to get him out of it.

Probably thought he could keep it from being public if he got it over with fast.

I thought Otter was the guy who threatened to throw Sali out of a window? Or was he the guy who called him the dumbest man in politics?

So "GOP Officials" Say (2.00 / 1)

From what I've read, Warner's family knows the decision.  I doubt Warner's mind will change, as an article of yours hinted at.

I'm hoping the Craig announcement comes today.  It would be too too sweet.
Monday: AG Alberto Gonzales Resigns
Monday Night: Craig bathroom scandal hits the fan.
Tuesday:Johnson announces '08 re-election intentions
Friday (12:00 PM Central): Warner retirement announcement --Expected--
Friday Night(I'm guessing 5-6 PM Eastern): Craig Resignation announcement --Expected--

Warner is already retiring.  The fact that Davis is prepping for a senate run is the key note to the cake.  If anyone would know (outside Warner's family) it would be Davis.

Well, yeah... Cancer isn't a big deal when you are rich enough to pay all th bills.  For the rest of us however, the programs he is spinning as bad are essential.  So I agree... Fuck him and Bush.

Overblown scandal (2.00 / 1)

  1. The GOP guys would not even consider replacing Craig if the Governor wasn't a Republican.
  2. GOP people shut their mouths at the numerous crimes committed by the Bushies and Cheneys, yet wallow in smug self righteousness at how moral they are by jettisoning one of their own over what? A clumsy silly attempt by a closeted gay or bissexual guy to solicit sex in a public restroom? His only flaw? He should have made sure George michael was in the next stall. He could resign over loss of dignity, I guess, but I do not see anything more than a minor infraction here. It is less harmful than a DUI at twice the legal limit. If he made an unwanted pass at a woman, this would not even be an issue.
  3. I do not feel sorry for two faced Craig even if my head tells me he is getting shafted over such a minor incident. I find his policies to me more offensive than this minor incident.

Re: Overblown scandal (none / 0)

All one has to do is look at the Presidential Elections... Our top 3 candidates are all on their first marriage... meanwhile most of the GOP is on their second or third.

Re: Overblown scandal (none / 0)

Like Larry Craig, another family values Republican Kathy Augustine who was murdered by her fourth husband last year. Four husbands, philandering, whoring and then gets murdered..

Typical GOP. The only conservatism that I find in the GOP other than tax cuts is racism.
