Bush: Just Not Raking It In Like He Used To

As Jonathan noted below, Bush will be in Minnesota tonight for a Norm Coleman fundraiser. But Norm's not the only lucky beneficiary of Bush's fundraising prowess.

Bush raised $55 million during 15 fundraisers through July 31, according to the Republican National Committee (RNC). [...]

Most of Bush's events this year have been on behalf of the GOP's national and congressional committees. He also has raised money for the New Jersey and Virginia state parties, and for Sens. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, Pat Roberts of Kansas and Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the minority leader.

So far this year, Bush has matched the total he raised during the first 7 months of 2005. Only problem: this year it took him twice the number of events to reach that total. Hey, that's twice the number of GOP incumbents he can help Democrats defeat in 2008. Other lucky candidates the kiss of death will be raising money for this month: Rep. Dave Reichert in Washington and Sen. Pete Domenici of New Mexico. As Jonathan says: bring him on.

Some sad facts about the drop-off in support at these fundraisers:

Smaller crowds. An estimated 800 people attended the RNC's gala fundraiser on May 10. Two years ago, the same event drew 1,500 people. About 3,000 people attended a June 13 dinner featuring Bush for the GOP's congressional committees, which brought in $15.4 million. The same event drew 5,500 supporters and raised $23 million two years ago.

As for why they're seeing the drop off, it's not exactly a mystery. From strategist Terry Holt...

"You can't underestimate the effect of the Democrats gaining the majority on the money raised at these dinners," he said. "In Washington, money follows power, and the power has shifted to Democrats in Congress."

And then, of course, there's this...

Low approval ratings. Bush's overall job approval rating is 34%, compared with 72% among Republicans, according to a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken Aug. 3-5. Both numbers are down more than 10 percentage points from 2005.

As a sidenote, can you believe his approval is still that high among Republicans? They'd actually nominate him again if they could. Scary.

Bush's draw is almost half of what it was two years ago. Yeah, he's been a drag, all right.

The number of Republicans (none / 0)

Whereas it is surprising his poll numbers among (R) remains as high as it is, isn't it also a fact that the number of self-idenitified (R) has been dropping? Link to Rasmussen's data.

It's not a significant drop in the number of (R) since 2005 (3.8% from July '05 to July '07) but it makes me wonder about the longitudinal effect of the reduction of the population of (R)s.  That is, if the number of (R) defectors were included, then there probably would be greater than a 10% poll drop since 2005.

In any case, I suppose this (relatively) high rating helps explain the Bush-like attitudes of the GOP presidential contenders.
