Dodd Smacks Down O'Reilly Over Yearly Kos

Yesterday Chris Dodd went on The O'Reilly Factor to talk about his attendence t the Yearly Kos convention. The segment is going to air on tonight's program, but O'Reilly teased it on his radio show earlier today. Take a listen to the audio first posted online here at MyDD (or download as a large .mp3 here):

This is some really great stuff. Dodd goes directly at O'Reilly in a way that few have been able to in a long time, not only strenuously defending the netroots from O'Reilly's scurrilous attacks but also going after O'Reilly for his own extremist language (for instance, Dodd brings up O'Reilly's comments from 2005 about Al Qaeda bombing San Francisco). You can hear O'Reilly get really frustrated in the clip -- particularly when he scolds Dodd for not being enough like his fellow Connecticut Senator, Joe Lieberman -- which is a testament to the solid job Dodd did during the interview.

So go and reward the good behavior over at Dodd's website, where he is hosting a petition supporting the netroots and standing up to O'Reilly.

With his sensible criticism of BaHawk, he's now my number 2.

You know he was great . People should get off that Obama Gaffe thing , there is nothing there . He had a slip and he corrected it , end of story. Dodd was great.

And for that (3.00 / 1)

Sen. Dodd will certainly get my vote. He has guts.

Kudos, but (none / 0)

the thing Dems need to do is criticize Fox News for actually running a parody news show on their air.  It has no credibility.  There is Fox Television which would be an appropriate venue, but they choose to make their own news division a laughing stock with this show.  Also, when one examines the content it furthers the argument that they are not a news channel, but a propaganda machine for the GOP.

I'm not even willing to listen to O'Leilly even if it's to hear Chris Dodd defend Kos.

Re: Dodd Smacks Down O'Reilly Over Yearly Kos (3.00 / 1)

And Dodd was just about the only Senate Democrat to campaign for Lamont against Lieberman.  (Obama refused.)  He was also the only member of CT's Congressional delegation to campaign for Lamont.

Re: Dodd Smacks Down O'Reilly Over Yearly Kos (none / 0)

Although not a sitting US Senator at the time, Edwards again lead the way by supporting Lamont.  But mucho credit to Dodd for standing up to O'Reilly.  He was incredibly articulate and tactful.  I also applaud his courage by supporting Lamont in the primary - the man is willing to risk a 30 year friendship with his home state colleague because he felt it was right.  That is most certainly the brand of leadership we need in the White House.

Re: Dodd Smacks Down O'Reilly Over Yearly Kos (3.00 / 1)

Okay this is correct, but you cannot even begin to compare the two.  Dodd campaigning against the neocon asshole is more ballsy than anyone else doing the same.

Give him his credit.

Just to clarify...(for the 10000th time) (none / 0)

Obama didn't "refuse." He supported Lamont in the general, gave him $5000, and sent out an email to his supporters saying that he supported Lamont and to help him out.

Re: Just to clarify...(for the 10000th time) (none / 0)

Obama did refuse to come to CT to campaign for Lamont.  Read the Taggais diary posted here and at Kos.  And also see the e-mail fiasco from the Obama camp that undermined Lamont in the CT media.

(And, by contrast, Obama publicly endorsed Lieberman in CT in the primary.)

Re: Dodd campaigns for Lamont (none / 0)

I thought he was the only one. Hillary did donate staff though. Just didn't openly campaign.

Some of Dodd ideas are great, he just gets no attention.

I like Dodd.  He's increasingly becoming my second choice.

Dodd is great (none / 0)

And he's been my #2 for awhile, surpassing Obama after the first Democratic Debate. If anything happens to Edwards' candidacy, Dodd would have my support.

Re: Dodd Smacks Down O'Reilly Over Yearly Kos (3.00 / 1)

Wow. I think this instance shows that the Dems will be running the table for this election. Billo was immediately on the defensive and never really came back. Not only is Dodd worth a second look, I think this is going to help him get some traction in early states.

Re: Dodd Smacks Down O'Reilly Over Yearly Kos (none / 0)

For reference:

The Bill O'Reilly comment Chris Dodd refers to was;

"And if Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. We're going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you, except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead."

It was broadcast on November 8th, 2005.

You can find a recording of it here:

Dodd's been excellent this whole campaign, and is easily my favorite of the announced candidates. Did a nice job on O'Reilly, glad to see he's turning some heads in his direction.

Maybe some poll movement can start from the netroots.

Re: Dodd Smacks Down O'Reilly Over Yearly Kos (none / 0)

Best was O'Reilly screaming -- actually screaming -- "if I were Joe Leiberman, I wouldn't even TALK to you anymore!"

Hilarious to witness a schoolyard bully getting his nose bloodied. Humiliation brings out the lack of substance to O'Reilly's tirades, forcing him to resort to adolescent whining. If only more progressives gave it to O'Reilly this way.

Dodd, HA !!! (none / 0)

I actually think I met Chris Dodd in high school. (Danbury, Conn.) As I see it, he is that rare specimen, a TRUE moderate. Not liberal at all, really, but not neocon, and not conservative. It's interesting that he would cover back for the netroots. He does has the positive of being very smart, very sure footed, very experienced.

It's hard to know what to make of all this. The Democratic party has a powerhouse lineup of potential candidates. The Republicans have a sorry lot of rejects and halfwits. That is very good.

O'Reilly 101 (none / 0)

Who was the other person who was able to outfox Billo on his own show, a few months back?

That clip and this should be required viewing for anyone preparing to go on the Factor. Marshal your points in advance, have something to attack with, don't back down, hit Falafelhead with his tactics even as he's using them. Dodd also broke through the BS argument rather well, but that isn't even necessary.

The only problem is that they probably don't have any of these guests on more than once. So we have to keep training new recruits.

Dodd is the man (none / 0)

Best appearance on FOX by a Democrat since Wes Clark  putting O Reilly in his place. See, we are not opposed to Dems going on FOX. People like Bill Maher should understand the distinction between this and legitimising FOX by letting them host a debate.

Apparently Senator Dodd was smart enough to appear on the O'Reilly show rather than Olberman's. He reached 4 times more people. FOXNEWS O'Reilly 3,743,000 FNC HANNITY/COLMES 3,382,000 MSNBC OLBERMANN 939,000
