Fred Thompson's Lobbying Past Biting Him In The Ass?

Ruh-roh:

Former Tennessee Sen. Fred D. Thompson, who is campaigning for president as a "pro-life" Republican, accepted a lobbying assignment from a family-planning group to persuade the first Bush White House to ease a controversial abortion restriction...

[snip]

His task was to urge the administration of President George H.W. Bush to withdraw or relax a rule that barred abortion counseling at clinics that receive federal money.

Thompson's spokesman denies that the former senator has ever done lobbying work on behalf of NFPRHA, the family planning group in question, but the recollection of several people, including then-CEO Judith DeSarno, as well as minutes from a meeting say otherwise.

DeSarno said Thompson reported to her, after being hired, that he had held multiple conversations about the abortion "gag rule" with [John] Sununu, who was then the White House chief of staff and the president's point man on the abortion rule.

Thompson kept her updated on his progress, she said, in telephone conversations and over meals at Washington restaurants.

Sununu also denies that Thompson met with him or anyone else at the White House about loosening the restriction. DeSarno's response:

Thompson "owes NFPRHA a bunch of money" if he never talked to [Sununu], as he said he had.

This news comes at a bad time for Thompson who has been wooing the religious right, seemingly successfully. Now that the fundamentalist Christian kingmakers James Dobson and Tony Perkins have undertaken a campaign to undermine Romney's support among evangelicals because of his porn problem, Thompson seemed perfectly positioned to be the beneficiary of their no doubt pure-intentioned machinations. As Soren Dayton put it earlier this week:

Christian right leaders have found their man in Fred Thompson, after a long, but ultimately unsuccessful courtship with Mitt Romney. This reminds me of the 2003 and 2004 buttons and bumper stickers "Dated Dean, Married Kerry."

These poor evangelicals can't seem to catch a break. Just when they thought they'd found their metaphorical bride...err...groom... they find out he cheated on them with their abortion rights foes back in the dreaded 90s. So now what? To whom will they direct their affections? Well, a bunch of Iowan Christians seem to have already moved on:

More than 50 religious conservatives in Iowa are leading an effort to convince Republicans to support presidential candidate Sam Brownback.

In a statement, the Kansas senator said they share his goal of rebuilding families and renewing culture. He said they could play an important role in his bid for the GOP nomination.

the Brownback campaign is working hard in IA (none / 0)

One of our occasional baby-sitters is an intern with the Brownback campaign (she's a college student). He recently completed a 28-stop bus tour around the state, and his campaign was visible in all of the July 4 parades in the Des Moines suburbs that I know of.

August 11 GOP straw poll in Ames is going to be make-or-break; will Brownback or Huckabee be the fundies' favorite?

Re: the Brownback campaign is working hard in IA (none / 0)

I'm very surprised that 'Brownback' and 'Huckabee' have not caught fire. I mean, these two are actually 'likeable' but 'rock solid' conservatives.

Why they'd drag out an old and bald man Thompson is beyond me.

Hillary: We will finally have a president who doesn't mind pulling over and asking for directions. Am I right, ladies?

I'm not sure Brownback qualifies as likable. Huckabee I'll give you but Brownback just creeps me out (not that I'm his target audience.)

Huckabee is more likeable, but (none / 0)

Brownback seems like the wingnuttiest of them all. I read a few "mothering" blogs that are mostly non-political but heavily populated by evangelical and conservative young moms. One of the blogs I read is by a Huckabee fan, but look at this comment posted by another reader:

Young Christian Woman said...

I'm a fan of Brownback. I wish that he was a little stronger on border security, but the way that he has consistently stood up for the unborn--all of them--makes him a frontrunner in my book. He even arguedin front of a national audience that children conceived in rape have a right to life, which is not presently a popular position.

___

She loves Brownback for being against abortion even in case of rape--she only wishes he were a little stronger on border security! LOL--that's what I call "priming" by the right-wing noise machine. I'll bet this woman never comes into contact with any real, live immigrants.

I PRAY Brownback wins the GOP Nom... It will be an ass kicking of monumental proportions.  Even Kucinich or Gravel could beat Brownback.

Re: the Brownback campaign is working hard in IA (3.00 / 1)

Huckabee has not caught fire because the Club for Growth kneecapped him a few months ago, on account of his tax-rasing record in Arkansas. The fiscal conservatives don't like him.

Which is good for us, b/c Huckabee is the most talented GOP candidate, and he represents the kind of politics most likely to help conservatives build a majority coalition.

Don't get me wrong -- he's a schmuck. But he would be a dangerous schmuck, if the Repubs weren't so short-sighted.

If Hillary looks to be the winner come December of 2007, you can bet the GOP will be going with the electability argument for their primaries.  They will find their Kerry and put him out there.

Despite indications that the fundies know they've been played, they seem willing to throw their lot in with someone who looks like a winner. OTOH, Thompson's record will make him an absolute sinker if he does become the GOP candidate.

'A pure republican' now that's ridiculously funny. Evilangicals might as well sit in their yards waiting for the rapture 'cause there ain't no such thing as a pure republican.

Re: Fred Thompson's Lobbying Past Biting Him In Th (none / 0)

Brownback is Roman Catholic. And while they don't pupblicize it,many fundy evangelicals put RCs in the same camp as Mormons, not really Christian. One woman interviewed on NPR at a gathering where Romney spoke, said this: " I don't believe that Mormons and Catholics are Christian, so I won't vote for anyone of that religion." The 30 Years war lives on.

Really?  So the fundies really are just the next evolution of WASPs.  Sigh... why did the puritans and extremists have to settle america... why couldn't we get the true Christians who believed in helping the poor and caring for your fellow man.

Re: Fred Thompson's Lobbying Past Biting Him In Th (none / 0)

Poor Fred Thompson! This is hilarious. If this keeps going on, Dems could be looking at a landslide victory in 2008. No matter who the candidate is. Republicans are going to have their Kerry/McGovern/Dukakis moment. In other words: LOse Badly.

Re: Fred Thompson's Lobbying Past Biting Him In Th (3.00 / 1)

Um... Kerry didn't lose badly.  He did lose but it was very close.  TO compare him to McGovern/Dukakis is totally inaccurate.  Now Mondale is another story.

The end result is the same. A loss by 2 points or 15 points is still a loss. Every time a Dem. candidate loses a lot more people get hurt.

My GOD are the Nutters just... nuts.  Seriously, Romney's porn problem... They really have an issue with PPV Hotel Porn that is pretty mundane.  Its not like ROmeny was watching or anything... just on the board.  Ridiculous.

I've seen porn on Marriott TVs... Unless they have changed something in the last few years, it really isn't that hardcore...  They cut out the... endings.  People would be better off going online.
