The SC Citadel debate

Whew, made it inside the Citidel, and got access into the hall, and what a fortress. Howard Dean is giving an intro to the debate. I heard that he missed his plane at DC National, took a taxi to Dulles, and another plane to Columbia and then buzzed over to Charleston-- what a chairman. Alongside a few other reporters and bloggers, off to the right of the stage. The candidates are being introduced, consider this an open thread.

Update [2007-7-23 19:20:20 by Jerome Armstrong]: Would you describe yourself as liberal? Clinton on "liberal" goes back to the root of what the word means, and then describes how the Republicans have trashed it; she conssiders herself a progressive, which identifies her with an american tradition, a modern progressive, and that's a pretty good answer. Gravel then takes on Obama, and some Robert Wolfe bundler-- who is that? I dunno; Obama then talks about generalities of transparency, anyway, nice butting of the heads there after a slow start to this debate.

Who would you choose as your VP nominee from the Republican party? Would Lieberman count?
Biden: Hagel; yea for bipartisanship-- he's done it he says.
Edwards: Hagel; then eschews the bipartisan bs and says the only way we are going to get things done is to take the power. "Take these people on" is Edwards angle.

Update [2007-7-23 19:28:59 by Jerome Armstrong]: Dodd's video, on his silver head, rocked. That will be worth seeing again. Hillary has already said the "experience" word many times-- talking point? Edwards on Elizabeth vs Hillary & Clinton following-- doesn't match up to the hype.

Update [2007-7-23 19:46:1 by Jerome Armstrong]: Richardson gets trashed a lot in the debate reviews, but he comes off pretty good when talking about how to solve Darfur; Biden follows up with agreeing to the 'no fly zone' but also wants 'troops on the ground'. Clinton agrees on sending troops (though she talks international) to Darfur, but not American-- "we've got to figure out what to do in Iraq". I can't imagine that Americans want to hear from Democrats about more overseas missions, Bush has sorta ruined that, no matter how good the cause, until we get out of Iraq.

Update [2007-7-23 19:57:56 by Jerome Armstrong]: Iraq. "How do we pull out now?" Obama: "as careful to get out as careless as we went in". Biden: "Time to tell some truth"... stay is going to be longer. Clinton has made a lot of segway into showing some anti-war passion... Anderson Cooper shuts down Kucinich with "we're gonna see your TV commercial" ha. Dodd: diplomacy, moral leadership. Richardson: "There's a big difference between me and the Senators". Six months, out; no residual troops. Get it done. Gravel: "What did all these people die for?" Obama: Fingers Clinton, and says "the time for us to ask about how we are going to get out of Iraq was before we went in." Edwards: To stop this war, turn up the heat on Bush. I think Richardson, more and more, is showing the strongest voice on getting out of Iraq, and unlike Clinton or Edwards, Obama is not going to be able to shut down Richardson's move to his left, based on the 2002 vote.

He had a GREAT video... I loved it... He should have done that as a commercial right after the hair cut issue was raised... it was a GREAT response.

As a you tube user, I found Hillary's a bit insulting.  I expected more.  Didn't like it at all.

Dodd's was also a highlight...

Like I said, a wonderful answer. It should be up to the government to confer all of the rights of marriage. As long as they do that it should be up to the religous denominiation to confer the word marriage... or at least, thats how I view it.

Edwards had a great answer on fighting for interest and Obama had a great answer on representing the people. But thus far no one has really stood out for more than one question.

The worst debate format thus far. Edwards was nailed  on the gay marriage question. But that was totally bush league for them to bring out the pastor in the audience. Unacceptable.

I also really dislike the tempo of the format. Why has gravel gotten as many questions as Hillary?

PS. Biden has the best Sudan answer by far period bar none. Theres no excuse for not acting in Sudan.

He doesn't support segregation along the lines of what we had in this country after Reconstruction. He supports a segregated government in the sense that the Kurds, Sunnis, and Shiites would each have the right to their own regional governments. He isn't talking different drinking fountains and the "the back of the bus," he is talking about allowing these peoples with immense cultural difference and a deeply ingrained distrust for the other parties to govern themselves.

In response to the last update-

I would definetly support our troops going to Darfur as part of an international peace keeping operation.

I think the reason we (democrats) don't want to hear about more international missions is because we know that it was irresponsible to go into Iraq alone and that we want international consensus when it involves military action.

At this time a year ago, Obama was clearly against setting a timetable for getting out.

Found it - he voted against Kerry/Feingold (none / 0)

in June 2006:
"I would like nothing more than to support the Kerry Amendment; to bring our brave troops home on a date certain, and spare the American people more pain, suffering and sorrow," Obama said.  "But having visited Iraq, I'm also acutely aware that a precipitous withdrawal of our troops, driven by Congressional edict rather than the realities on the ground, will not undo the mistakes made by this Administration. It could compound them.  It could compound them by plunging Iraq into an even deeper and, perhaps, irreparable crisis."  [Obama Floor Speech, 6/21/06]

Why only emphasize safety/orderliness of w/drawal? (none / 0)

Clinton just talked about importance of SAFE withdrawal/minimizing loss of life during scaledown/redeployment. I guess if she had any big ideas about how to use the remaining 50K troops she would have rolled them out...

Why isn't anyone talking about specific uses of residual forces? Just a political loser? Too early to get locked into a plan? Or is this a genuine dearth of ideas?

Hilary is doing an EXCELLENT job tonight. However, I didn't care much for that slow-walking answer to the question about meeting foreign leaders. Gosh, she'll have lots of power if she's elected. She can even invite people over to the White House, don't you know.

Re: The SC Citadel debate (none / 0)

Was just saying to my parents-- someone NEEDS to be telling HRC that when someone asks her about her gender, she has to talk about POWER. The might, dexterity & economic brawn of the greatest nation in the free world (yes, the nationalism is a winner) would be wielded by a woman with significant experience in the US Senate & experience as the first lady, etc.

Thought her answer was still a stand-up double, but talking about POWER and int'l precedent AND her experience is a home run.

Re: The SC Citadel debate (none / 0)

When you think of the White House photo ops with foreign dignitaries, I think Hilary would take to those with gusto. Democrats have a flair for finding attractive locations for their meetings, and would go beyond using only the State of the Union speech and the Ford's Theater or Lincoln Center gala events. Even Bush did as much with having Putin come to Maine. The Clinton years always began with an exclusive New Year's gathering somewhere in South Carolina, IIRC, a kind of retreat for thinkers, movers and shakers. Those and the G8 summits depend on taking the reins of power, as you say.

Re: Edwards got this one tonight... (none / 0)

In all honesty, (and I'm a straight up Obama guy), I think Hillary is really good at these debates, as in she's technically good, However when she tried to take ownership of the debate by chiming in about the un-seriousness of a global warming question, but Anderson cut her off pretty quick and then a "serious" global warming question was asked next.

Hillary, Obama, Edwards did well, Biden did well too. Kucinich and Gravel are too idealistic for me, no pragmatism what so ever...

Re: The SC Citadel debate (3.00 / 2)

My scorecard.

  1. Clinton - smarter than everyone on the stage, focused, credible, very impressive performance, hit rogue states and gender out the park (and I don't like her rogues answer), hated nuclear dodge
  2. Dodd - some great moments, good pacing, solid answers, glad your in the US Senate
  3. Obama - I'm coming around to "what does that mean"?  Mechanisms?  No "bipartisan" solution to Social Security please. Improved some in the latter stages
  4. Biden - had me going on Darfur, but, no.  Where do you think he sees himself compared to Jesus?  Cool on "your baby" from the Michigan Militia freak
  5. Edwards - some highlights on the war, good corporate rants, good on reparations, some very weak moments, get a coherent gay marriage answer, nailed nuclear power.  Dropped two positions on the coat alone.  I'm stunned by the smallness
  6. Richardson - basically weak on everything except education, very unimpressive, did like him calling out GOPers on voter suppression
  7. Kucinich - ugh, McLain, crystals, "democrats failed", sorry.  Says some great things but I have a New Age hangup
  8. Gravel - take your drip and go home

Format was terrible.  Terrible.  Not opposed in principle, but implementation weak.

Really enjoyed global warming reduced to 4th grade level.

No more Anderson Cooper.
