As if it weren't already apparent, John McCain's presidential campaign is over. Finished. Done. Finito. Dead. The lede from The Hotline:
Two of John McCain's top WH'08 aides, campaign manager Terry Nelson and chief strategist John Weaver, have resigned.
Mark Ambinder has more:
Republicans close to the campaign say that Mark Salter, McCain's long-time chief of staff and co-author of his five books, is also leaving the campaign. The sources said that the three did not split from McCain amicably.
The writing has been on the wall for some time -- probably since the first quarter fundraising numbers undercut any notion that McCain was the frontrunner or consensus establishment pick for the Republican nomination. As bad as those numbers were, McCain's second quarter numbers were even worse, with McCain actually holding less cash-on-hand than Ron Paul as of the end of June.
Yet even if McCain losing the entire top level of his political staff is more of an effect than a cause of his problems, it still is terrible news for his campaign. He's done. I suppose the only question now is when he's going to endorse his old Senate buddy Fred Thompson.
