Official Debut of the MyDD Obama Team

Welcome to the debut of the regular Obama weekly news. It is my intent to continue this on an ongoing basis throughout the duration of the primaries. Any one who wants to help with this effort let me know in the comments or send me a hollar through my youtube account at lovingj1. Also, any strong Obama supporters who wants to be considered part of the MyDD Obama team should show their support by beginning their diaries with the new MyDD Obama team logo I have created.

1. Obama's Fundraising Domination

Its official, Obama's numbers are nothing short of amazing. He raised over $32.5 million total and $31 million of it is primary cash, all from over over 258,000 donors. Everyone who help support Obama's campaign, including me, let's give ourselves a pat on the back. This shows that the average citizen can still make a difference. 2. Real Clear Politics: Edwards crumbling campaign may provide Obama the boost he needs

John Mcintyre of realclearpolitics.com wrote an interesting article on his take of the Edwards campaign and who would be the beneficiaries in the polls should the whole Edwards campaign collapse. The article is entitled Edwards' Crumbling Campaign is Bad News for Clinton

With the second quarter fundraising numbers due out over the next week and with the rumblings that the Obama campaign is poised to release a monster haul, the potential elimination of Edwards as a serious candidate, coupled with the Obama campaign's ability to not only compete with, but to beat, the vaunted Clinton machine, could be the catalyst that allows Obama to consolidate his position as the sole anti-Hillary candidate. He would then be in a very strong position to tighten those horserace numbers both nationally and in the key early states over the next quarter as we head into the fall.

3. The Debate Reviews for Obama during the All American Presidential Forum

The reviews are in and it looks like Obama has gotten extremely positive press from his performance.

Politico's Roger Simon: Spoke with passion and conviction and has gotten better and more confident with each debate, which bodes well for him because we have plenty of debates to go. He had a certain kind of homefield advantage as the only African-American onstage, but he used it modestly. While others could show sympathy, he could show empathy. "We have made enormous progress," he said, "but the progress we have made is not good enough." And he did speak with refreshing candor when he talked about the high incidence of HIV/AIDS in the black community, and said: "We must overcome the stigma that still exists. We don't talk about this. We don't talk about this in our schools. We don't talk about this in our churches. It is an aspect of homophobia that we don't talk about it."

Democratic Consultant Jenny Backus: Democratic consultant Jenny Backus said Obama's effort to speak to whites and blacks resulted in his best debate yet. "Obama took his performance to a different level by showing the ability to have a conversation that was about race that wasn't just one way," Backus said. "He was talking to both whites and blacks in his answers."

Washington Post's Chris Cillizza: Speaking of nice moments, Obama showed his ease in the debate a few minutes ago. After Sen. Joe Biden (Del.) said that both he and Obama had been tested for AIDS, Obama jumped in to note that he had been tested with his wife, Michelle -- jokingly adding that he didn't want anyone to think anything "funny" was going on. The crowd laughed as PBS showed Michelle on screen. The moment showed how Obama has grown in the first three debates; he appears relaxed and comfortable tonight.

4. Michelle shows strong leadership in addressing campaign issues

Michelle has stepped up her efforts in campaigning on her husband's behalf. Recently she addressed the critics who question Obama's experience.

"For people who say that Barack Obama is not experienced . . . I can't wrap my head around that," Michelle Obama told hundreds of people crowded into the offices of the nonprofit Our Children's Foundation in Harlem.

"Yes, he's ready to lead," she said. "The question is: Are you ready? . . . Will you move out of fear, or will you move out of possibility?"

Michelle Obama added, "What they are counting on is for us not caring . . . [and that voters will] stay at home."

Michelle also hit another note with the American electorate speaking to a crowd in Harlem on June 26th. She addressed voters concerns with the terrible direction George Bush has taken our country. For those who have doubts and questions she says:

5. Obama addresses the issue of Hillary's experience

Obama took issue with the percieved notion that somehow Senator Clinton was more prepared for the presidency than the other candidates.

"The only person who would probably be prepared to be our president on Day One would be Bill Clinton _ not Hillary Clinton," Obama told Monday night at a fundraiser in Chicago.

6. Republican Leaders scorches Dillard for doing Obama ads

Senate Republican Leader Frank Watson said Tuesday that Sen. Kirk Dillard should explain to fellow Republicans in the legislature why he appeared in an Iowa TV ad touting Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama.

Watson said he was disappointed that Dillard, the former chair of the DuPage County GOP organization, agreed to the ad for Obama . . .

. . .Dillard contended the ad, in which he speaks of the bipartisan cooperation exhibited by Obama in the Illinois Senate, is "not that big of a deal" . . .

I liked the focus on "judgement" in the citizen video.

I really think that Obama should add "Judgement" as a catchword to his campaign...a nice counter to Hillary's "Ready". It would be nice if he deployed that later in the primary season, ideally coupled with soundbites of his various 2002 remarks on the stupidity of the Iraq war.

The unspoken implication:
Dropping the ball on an issue of Iraq's magnitude, failing to read the NIE, etc., does not typify what we should expect of someone "ready" to lead.

Oppossing the war from the start--more importantly, opposing the war precisely because of strategic consequences which all came to pass--demonstrates the vision, widsom, and strategic aforethought that we'd all like to see in an American president.

Not saying I buy the merits of this line, but it could be effective for Obama going forward. At any rate, it's worth trying to get the media to bite on the narrative.

However, judgment is the more common version. Type it in Microsoft word and watch spell checker show you the one without the e.

I've said this before, and I will say it again. Obama has already squeezed as many votes as he is going to get out of "I opposed the war from the beginning." He should not repeat Dean's mistake of hammering on this to the exclusion of other messages.

If I were Obama, I would try to show that he is better than Hillary on the Iraq issue TODAY, rather than continuing to talk about where they were in 2002. Hasn't Hillary been saying privately that we'll have troops in Iraq ten years from now?

This strategy would have worked better for Obama if he had been the Senate leader this year in pushing for timetables to withdraw troops. In that regard I agree with Big Tent Democrat, that Obama made a huge strategic blunder in allowing Edwards (and Richardson, for that matter) to stake out stronger positions on withdrawing troops.

Totally agree here. He has the votes for that issue, define himself and what he will do DIFFERENTLY than Clinton. She already said she is keeping troops over there. But the way he is turning the campaign, just listen to his speeches from here out, he will define what he will vs. his opponents. But desmoinesdem, you are on point with this one.

He needs to do something to stand out otherwise Clinton will outflank him on the issue. Unfortunately, they only differ on ONE Iraq War vote and it was actually Clinton who voted against the Bush Administration.

I didn't see Feingold praising Clinton for the work she has done to push the agenda of getting out of Iraq. Realistically though, by the time the election comes around I think we will have begun withdrawal from Iraq. I think legislation will be passed in September. And then the second largest campaign issue in the 2006 election, corruption in Government will come to the fore, and when it does, the difference between Obama and Clinton will become very, very clear.

Well, to the extent the some people have yet to get to know Obama, I still think there are some legs in his 2002 stance once he deploys it later in the campaign.

I was simply trying to think of a short and sweet catchword to counter "Ready"--I thought "Judgment" might work--and Obama's Iraq vote is what could envince his judgment.

I do agree, however, that he can't rely on that to carry him home. Among those of us are paying attention, he won't pick up anymore support because of his early opposition to the war.

Of couse, many people aren't paying close attention. My dad, for instance, who isn't exactly a hermit had never read the text of Obama's "dumb war" speech. He was completely blown anyway and asked why Obama wasn't playing this up more...I have a feeling that a lot of people only have a hazy notion of what Obama's all about--more people who he'll have to introduce himself too later in the season.

The first direct mail piece I got from Obama was all about Iraq and included the full text of his speech from the fall of 2002.

I went to an Obama house party, and the field organizers went to great lengths to talk about how prophetic he was in that speech.

Iowa voters are starting to pay attention (at least the kind of voters who show up for a precinct caucus on a cold Monday night), and Obama has not yet taken the lead. He's going to need to do something else to grow his support here. He has a lot of potential to grow, I suspect, but he will need to make the case against Hillary more explicit and more about today than about 2002.

Not advisable in my opinion...many of us really are undecided. There is plenty of time before most of the public-at-large will begin to shop for a candidate.

FWIW, it's the only reason I'm reading and recommending this diary. I don't think Obama has begun to squeeze as many votes out of it as he can get, which is not to say that he shouldn't pursue from the senate getting the troops phased out of Iraq (Obama needs to better articulate his position on the Vets committee too, while he's at it)

But Edwards (and even Richardson) supported this ungodly war.

I agree with "bode78" completely. You have to make it into a "judgement" issue. She had not read the intelligence report and voted for the authorization of the war. Finegold, Kennedy, and others had the same access to the report and they voted no. So what does it imply about her leadership or responsibility as a representative of the people? She and many others probably voted for the Patriot Act without even knowing what's in it. They are too lazy to read before they vote.

Obama should focus more on bringing "integrity and dignity" to the White House with emphasis on G. Bush's campaign pledge to "restore dignity" to the White House (remember the Lincoln Bedroom thing?). Obviously, Bush turned it into something of a deep dark secret place. Obama can add to his ethics reform "restoring transparency and dignity" to the oval office. This would put the focus back on Bil Clinton's recklessness and how he lost the Democratic Majority in Congress and Al Gore's loss by a few hundred votes. The other thing to focus on is how Hillary has a solid 50% of the population against her. It's important to cast her as a DIVIDER and not a UNITER. She's not electable.

My guess is that at least some of Obama's fund-raising consultants/bundlers will
be reporting final info to the campaign over the next couple of days, so...

Any numbers from the Web site are likely to be a little low, pending
final numbers from the campaign.

In any case, there will be much less of a lag between the end of Q2 and Obama Q2 reporting
than there was for Q1. I'd be surprised if Obama didn't release detailed final numbers this
coming week -- especially given his push on transparency, over the last few weeks.

Very nice diary. I am glad that Edwards Evening News Roundup, which has been going for 3 months, has inspired you. ;-) It does make for a positive statement about the candidate. Good information on Obama.

I would say that Real Clear Politics is not necessarily the best source or commentary on the Edwards campaign. The reports of its demise or "crumbling" are highly premature. Edwards is doing just fine.

Yeah, even if it is true, I wouldn't go out of my way to piss off the Edwards people if I were you.

If Edwards eventually drops out, Obama wants to make common cause with him and his supporters.

Rubbing his face in the mud isn't the way to do that.

(I think Obama himself realizes this, which is why you heard Obama say "i agree with john" and "john is right" a couple times during the last debate.)

By the way, it seems to me that Biden is already looking for a way to get in with Obama.

The AIDS thing was the second time I heard Biden use a "Barack and me" meme during a debate.

Can't quite remember the first one, but it hit me pretty quickly that Biden might be looking to hook up with Obama down the road.

He wouldn't make a good veep for Obama--someone like Dodd would be better, Biden's too much of a wild card--but he'd make a good foreign policy advisor and possible Sec. of State or Defense.

Biden has a seat up in 2008. I'd hate to see something happen like in 2004. I've given this a decent amount of thought, and I think Daschle would be a good VP choice for Obama. At least that's the jive I get from him. His style as an upbeat likable guy, would compliment Obama's message of unity.

their polling stuff is useful, though even pollster.com probably does a better job.

But their articles on Edwards (and Obama) tend are almost 100% negative right wing peices. I can understand I guess why Lovingj went with this one because it is a good article for Obama but its still not a very good article. Especially since most of us already know that the 2nd choice for most Obama and Edwards supporters is Hillary. And also since there is absolutely no chance Edwards is going to drop out, or will need to drop out, before Iowa. He isnt getting the kind of money Obama and Hillary are getting, but still has a strong base of support.

I just want to agree with you that Edwards will not drop out. What candidate would ever drop out while they lead in Iowa? All the hoopla about money is over extended. Obama and Hillary are outraising Edwards yet they can't overtake his lead in Iowa. Something tells me that no matter how much money you raise that's not the ticket in getting voters to like you in Iowa and NH. Personally, I'm waiting for a few others to drop out so we can have a real debate where the candidates don't have to answer in 30 seconds or less. As of right now Obama is my #2, only because of Hillary and her ties to big pharma make me think she will not push for UHC once she gets into office. And, the rumors about her not bringing troops home freaks me out too.

And that article was one mans opinion and by no means any kind of guaranteed prediction. However, I disagree with you about John Edwards first place status in Iowa as inevitable. Obama has been campaigning very hard there as well and his numbers have been steadily rising as a result. So, we will just have to wait and see who come outs on top in the end but for now JRE has remained consistent with his first place lead (except those annoying ARG polls).

The ticker is a separate issue. It hasn't changed since midnight EST, but I assume that -- since the
midnight deadlines are pro-rated per time zone -- the money will continue to trickle in for the next
few hours (West Coast, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam).

I also assume that, in this final crunch, the ticker just isn't a priority right now, but that it will be
updated over the next couple of days to reflect the final contributions.

Obviously, there has been somewhat less of an impetus to give online, since the 250K and 350K
thresholds were crossed. And while I would think that 355K donations from 260K people might
yet be possible, it's probably useful to bear in mind that there have been only a little more than
1,800 total donations in the last 24 hours.

There will be a lot of subtle changes in the framing of the way the war is perceived nationally depending on how and when Repugs continue to defect. Running around yelling "bring the troops home" hasn't brought us any closer to that reality. Cindy Sheehan tragically found that out. Clinton has already successfully blurred the conversation (except for with hardcore junkies who are up on her nuances) The difference in their judgment on this issue needs to be part of package,not the signature of his campaign. Rather than no approach,he took a thoughtful pragmatic one. Uninsulate Bush. Cripple his veto power.

True, but it is beginning to appear that the general in 2008 will be fought on meta-issues, as it should be, and I think we should be prepared to take those positions now. There is every indication that the war will be wound down from spring through summer 2008; not soon enough, to be sure, but well in time for the GOP to pretend it never happened and challenge other ground.

This horrible war cannot end soon enough and if the Republicans do it just to clear their decks it will still be a welcome relief for all concerned. But we need to be ready to take the initiative in a post-Iraq political landscape.

That is true, we did have a good relationship before it all turned ugly. For me, it was the Edwards supporters are racist comment...that killed it. But, my guess is you were in the midst of a fiery situation and it got out of hand.

I do not know if dailykos is still the same way but I find things more peaceful over here at MyDD. However, there are always going to be partisans.

faithfull, LVPG, iceberslim are all wonderful posters as are several other Obama supporters.

IMO, lovingj was badly treated by some Edwards supporters (there are several that itch to dump troll ratings when then don't like Edwards being criticized) making for bad blood, which once it begins, goes back and forth. I admire lovingj's dedication to his cause and I find what I have read of his myDD work to be truthful and honest.

ps: I like and respect some Edwards supporters as well, such as yourself and a few others.

I would suggest that taking that Republican RCP article on Edwards out might be a good choice (see my comments on it above). RCP is Republican talking points central when it comes to Democrats.

I no longer have a DKos account but I agree that they do need more balanced diaries of the candidates over there. Too many hit pieces when I was there. It was causing me to get to entirely frustrated and angry and as a result I started to lash back. I am fine with just doing my part on MyDD. I like the atmosphere better even though DailyKos draws a much larger crowd. I think Icebergslim will be making some nice contributions to the dialogue over there in regards to the Obama campaign. I still read the diaries and front posts regularly but I have no desire to comment or post diaries there anymore. Its just not for me.

VP, there are all kinds of articles out there, period. It was an article and up to the reader to agree or de-bunk. I don't believe it, John Edwards is a viable candidate, but the article was about strategy and Obama in this race, period. There is nothing to read in the tea leaves.

about the tone of the article but agree with what you said. RCP has a negative article on JRE just about every day. Adding stuff like this into your diary will tend to move your focus from promoting Obama to defending an attack on Edwards. Especially on somewhere like Dkos with a very large population.

There are lots of negative articles on Obama and Hillary as well, just like Edwards and as a general rule EENR doesn't post them.

I'm not a committed Obama supporter, so maybe my opinion doesn't mean anything, but the three squiggly lines in the graphic detract from the overall graphic.

Also, I don't know if it was on purpose or not, but the Obama drawing doesn't capture your candidate at all. It's a little too reminiscent of the JFK painting where he's looking down with his arms folded across his chest. The painting captures JFK brilliantly... a president whose life (and the hopes of a generation) was cut too short. Obama's got a great smile. I'd use a drawing where he's smiling instead.

Also, the picture of Obama was picked exactly for that purpose because it reminded me so much of JFK and RFK. Obviously this is a matter of opinion but I think Obama is exuding the same kind of presence with his campaign that the Kennedy brothers (excluding Ted) had.

Yeah, but this doesn't remind me of the positives about JFK or RFK.

It reminds me of the fact that both JFK and RFK were assassinated.

Maybe it's just because one of my old professors used the JFK painting that the Obama sketch reminds me of, to discuss how the enduring fascination with JFK is partly a result of how the country had so much hope entering the 1960s and saw much of it turn into turmoil (including the assassination of JFK & RFK).
