John Edwards On Leno Open Thread

Hey, west coast, you gonna be watching Sen. and Mrs. Edwards on Leno tonight? Share your thoughts in the comments or talk about whatever you darn well please.

Update [2007-6-26 3:38:12 by Todd Beeton]: Big laugh from Jay to Elizabeth: "Do you ever hang out with the other candidate spouses...Michelle Obama...Bill Clinton...?

The first part of the interview focuses on Elizabeth and she is really brilliant -- smart, compassionate, funny. She should really run for something. I hear a certain NC senator is in need of a challenger...

Jay asked Sen. Edwards about the fact that Elizabeth came out in support of gay marriage, which he disagrees with. He said "I'm not where Elizabeth is yet" but said he is a strong supporter of gay and lesbian rights. He said he found out about Elizabeth's statement in the newspaper. "You know there's this strange thing with Elizabeth, she actually says what she thinks."

Jay asked about Hillary being up in the polls, Edwards said he's running for president because of "37 million people in poverty, universal healthcare, getting off our addiction to oil and ending the war in Iraq...wherever it is up in the polls." Big applause.

Update [2007-6-26 3:50:18 by Todd Beeton]: Jay asks about the low approval ratings for the new Democratic congress when they were supposed to come in on their "white horse." Edwards gets it: "Bush keeps blocking what the Democratic congress wants to do. I think people expect Washington to change but it takes some time for things to change." He then said he would have preferred the congress had been firm with Bush on forcing him to withdraw troops from Iraq.

Jay: "Are we safer since September 11?"

Edwards: "No...there are more terrorists and we have fewer allies. The war in Iraq has been a huge recruitment tool for terrorists...in terms of homeland security, we've made some progress there...but you have to think about the underlying foundation for terrorism and what's happened there is the war in Iraq has helped them, America is seen as a bully, the world doesn't want to follow us...a huge responsibility for the next president of the US will be to restore the moral standing in the world." Applause.

On immigration: "We need to do a better job on our southern border, get tougher on employers who are violating the law and create a real path to earned citizenship. We don't want a country made up of first class citizens and second class workers, that's not what America is."

Two Americas: "The top 300,000 income earners earned more than the bottom 150 million...We need to create more chances and opportunities for more people with things like universal healthcare, better wages, the right to organize, those sorts of things."

He said "I'm not where Elizabeth is yet" but said he is a strong supporter of gay and lesbian rights.
New Rule: if you endorse "separate but equal" for gay couples, you don't get to call yourself a strong supporter of gay and lesbian rights.

Sound fair?

Re: Other than his wife (none / 0)

I'd say they're all about the same when it comes to gay rights... Civil Unions, gays in the military, expanding adoption rights, etc.

and all hide it on their websites... I think John Edwards' statement of "I'm not there yet" is pretty applicable to the whole field of (top tier) candidates on gay issues.

Interestingly, Edwards was opposed to civil unions in the 2004 campaign, wanting to leave the matter to the states to decide.

I don't think you're quite right on the last point.

Leaving it to the states was a way of keeping the feds out of it - like the defense of marriage act which the clinton's supported

Re: Other than his wife (none / 0)

That was also a way to circumvent the Full Faith and Credit clause.

It's kind of interesting to see DOMA presented as a way of protecting gays from government.  I think it's a bass-ackwards way of putting it, but it's an interesting spin.

Re: Other than his wife (none / 0)

If any of the other top tier candidates want to tout their strong support of GLBT rights during a national interview while in the same breath opposing marriage equality, I'll give them hell, too.

Re: John Edwards On Leno Open Thread (3.00 / 1)

ditto what the other poster said. And day rights are more last I check than gay marriage. That is only one of our issues. It's not meant to be the only issue. Or doesn't issues like gays in the military or hate crimes or protection with regard to the right to not be fired from your job count in your mind? I guess not since you reduce it all to one thing. A very important thing. But one thing just the same.

Re: John Edwards On Leno Open Thread (none / 0)

Just because someone in the 1960s disagreed with lynching, that didn't automatically make them an integrationist--it just made them not as bad as some.

He wants to claim to be a strong supporter of gay and lesbian rights, he needs to not endorse 'separate but equal' policies.  At this point, he can be marginally supportive, or even kinda supportive, but opposing marriage equality ain't what strongly supportive looks like.  When he endorses good positions on the issues you mentioned AND marriage equality, then he can tout his strong support.

I don't like when people tell me that my sister and sister-in-law are only playing dress-up, or that they deserve less liberty than I do simply because I'm straight and they're not.  And when those same people who tell me that then try and claim they don't really believe my sister should be treated unequally but they simply "aren't there yet" on equality, I tend to call them out on it, especially when they want to hold a major office in the United States government.

are you comparing the fact he is for civil unions with lynching?  you know what-never mind good luck.

Re: John Edwards On Leno Open Thread (none / 0)

No, I'm comparing it with segregation.  It's the reincarnation of "separate but equal."

Not too good at following a simile, are you?

Re: Elizabeth was the only (none / 0)

he will spin it to a negative. people with an agenda do that. and as with my comment above don't expect a positive response.

Re: Elizabeth was the only (none / 0)

My only agenda is that I want people to recognize my sister as an equal citizen, and to not hypocritically pretend like they do when they don't.

I don't have a pony in this race.  I've been fairly critical of all the top 3.  My last diary was about disappointment with Obama.  Previous comments yesterday covered my discomfort with Hillary, and as I recall this was my only "who's he kidding?" post about Edwards since the last time we discussed his opposition to equality.

But people with an agenda will see hidden agendas behind anyone who doesn't agree with them, won't they?

Re: Elizabeth was the only (none / 0)

Edwards is the only candidate to completely oppose DOMA that I know of. While he says that he's against marriage equality, the fact that he's against DOMA essentially amounts to legalizing marriage equality, even if people would have to travel to mass to get their licenses.

That said, he's making it hard for me to admit he has the best position on glbt rights. "I'm not there yet," sounds almost worse to me (a gay person) as "I'm not there." Yet? Please. When are you going to be there, the next time you decide to run?

While there isn't a whole lot of differences between all 3 candidates this time around, I think Edwards seems the most progressive overall of the Big Three. My support for him, however, is tepid until he warrants a stronger endorsement or Al Gore jumps in.

Re: John Edwards On Leno Open Thread (3.00 / 1)

I really can't believe I just heard this... NPR this morning run a complete hatchet job on Edwards. I couldn't find a transcript yey but will try to summarize what was said...

-----
Commentator: Complains about how many candidates we have in USA, one of them, Edwards was on Leno last night.

Leno: Your anniversary is coming up, is it true that since you're a cheapskate you still go to Wendy's? blah, blah, blah

Edwards: I can't spend a lot on dinner whan I spend $400 on haircuts

Commentator: Edwards has been criticized by some recently for paying for his haircut out of his campaign fund, which he eventually paid back, and for having his anti-poverty non-profit fly him to NH, which is an early primary state.
-----

That was it. I thought they would then go into a discussion of these attack points they threw out there, but that was it. What is newsworthy about this? Why did they run it?

Is there really a corporate media effort to discredit the Dem who polls best against any Rep in the general election?

CPB (none / 0)

There's been a fair amount about the politicization (read: appointed republican hacks directing for political advantage) of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Think of it as another rank on the "Mighty Wurlitzer".

Yes. But it's not because he polls the best against Rep candidates. It's because he's the strongest candidate with a populist message about poverty, universal healthcare, education, and standing up for ordinary citizens against big business. Wall Street hates that message and Wall Street controls corporate media -- and CPB.

I was glad to hear Edwards say the law against hiring illegals should be enforced and employers fined. Wish the penalty were retroactive so we could wipe out the national debt.
Employers should not be given amnesty!!

Good job NPR, you've learned th FOX lesson well: "some people say."

Commentator: Edwards has been criticized by some recently for paying for his haircut out of his campaign fund, which he eventually paid back, and for having his anti-poverty non-profit fly him to NH, which is an early primary state.

What's so great about marriage? (none / 0)

The majority of marriages end in divorce. I don't get fighting for the right to marry other than if it is denied to you, it denies your freedom to pursue whatever happiness or hell you want.
